Seriously, what’s wrong with the Eels?

By Justin Cormick / Roar Guru

After Monday’s embarrassing 44-12 loss to the Penrith Panthers, Eels co-captain Jarryd Hayne claimed it was the worst he has ever felt after a match.

The rivalry between the two clubs has been labelled ‘the battle of the west’. The Panthers fielded a young and inexperienced squad using a number of players from the Toyota Cup, and they thoroughly outclassed Parramatta on the night.

Since their impressive 2009 season, in which they made the grand final, the Eels’ form has dropped dramatically.

They found themselves finish the 2010 season in 12th position out of a total 16. The Eels finished the 2011 season third last, only a single point above the Raiders and Titans.

2012 saw the Eels pick up the wooden spoon as they finished the league in last place, four points below the Panthers in 15th.

Hayne has explained how awful the last few seasons have been for the Eels, culminating in the embarrassing loss to the Panthers. The fullback also said it is not up to one player to change everything, but will be a team effort.

So what do the Eels need to do?

The team is lacking confidence, motivation and determination. Confidence will be gained if the team can get a number of wins under their belt, motivation can be gained when players and staff encourage each other.

But determination is something the players need to find inside themselves. If the current team cannot, they need to be replaced.

Two players, Ben Roberts and Ben Smith, have been dropped from the team, with a number of Toyota Cup players called in to replace them.

Coach Ricky Stuart needs to look at his players and decide who is good enough to stay in the team. Perhaps he should consider dropping even more players from his squad.

The likes of Cheyse Blair, Ken Sio and Reni Maitua have to be looked at. Their contribution to the team must be analysed, and if they are not good enough Ricky will need to replace them.

Some good scouting is needed at the Eels to bring in some quality youth who are determined to prove themselves in the NRL.

19 year-old Kelepi Tanginoa has been impressive for the team already this season. And this weekend’s match against the Cowboys will see juniors Api Pewhairangi starting and Kaysa Pritchard and Peni Terepo on the bench.

Reports claim Hayne has confronted Stuart about a possible change to five-eighth, but it remains to be seen if this change will improve things at the Eels.

However, Ricky needs to do something, and soon, if the Eels hope to avoid a second straight season in last position.

Well I said at the start of the season Parra with Stuart are gone for all money. He is useless as a nrl coach his rebuilding line has been used to death.Has proved himself a failure then dumping all his players what a joke.I do not think the board will listen to the fans as they think for some ridiculous reason he is the answer to their problems.Truth is he is the problem time to go Stuart and take that hasbeen Hayne with you

Totally agree with Ronald M. If Stuart had any idea it would not have taken this long to drop Ben Roberts. The longterm damage Stuart causes will not be properly assessed because it will be explained away that he inherited a team in a mess already. Hayne is not a fullback nor a five eighth. He could excel as a lock but he has too much power to accept being placed there.

Parra have fallen for the three card trick in employing stuart...he is a dud....only won when gould was involved. his time elsewhere whether it be at national or club level has shown his true colours....done nothing....not fair to judge him on origin.as qld just too good..does not matter who coaches. if i hear stuart one more time talk about 3 year plans etc.....it is a joke and is his way of deflecting very poor outcomes. look at easts at least they are playing with some sort of structure.....parra are hopeless with a very limited purpose or awareness to their game....hayne as capt....please....the club should flick both hayne and stuart, bring back kearney or even brian smith and set about making a culture where the club is first not the gunna coach and capt. hayne would be a sensation in the swifts netball team, stuart should "Stick" to being a number 2 and flush himself.

I don't follow League that closely, yet it's totally obvious to me that the problem is Rick Stuart. He has no idea.

You're completely right. Parramatta have been living off of the breadcrumbs that Grothe, Ella, Price, Sterling, Kenny and the rest of the eighties left behind.

Bazzio, the Eels Board seem to be fractious since Adam was a boy. It beggers belief a Club with fantastic juniors, plenty of resources at there disposal, huge supporter base & great facilities / Stadium are a rabble. There are no excuses really. It must come down to those running the Club. I'm not having a go at Ken Edwards who is a very good operator and new to the CEO role. Likewise Stuart has inherited a mess with the roster and insipid culture. Appointing Edwards was a good move, however he has he has a huge job in turning it around. Ditto Stuart. The first thing Edwards needs to do now is ring recruitment guru Peter O'Sullivan. I believe he is at the Rooters. I would break the bank to get him to look after recruitment / retention which has been woefully abysmal for too long. Paying Sando 500k a year is utter madness. Paying Corey Norman 400k is way over. They have committed 600k annually or so on Will Hoppa which again just doesn't make sense. Fine player but he's an outside back that hasn't touched a ball in 2 years. I could go on and on etc... The infrastructure is there once they get the right Board in place and right playing personnel.

Good in theory except Ricky took over the Sharks in 2007 so it was his 2nd year at the helm when they finished equal first. Plus he has won a series with the Blues something you also state he hasn't done.

Same reason Inglis is at fullback - you want someone pretty strong, hard to tackle, who can pop up everywhere. Which suits Hayne, he can walk for 75 minutes and spend 5 minutes running 100% at tired defenders. He's not any form of half.

Really turbo? Out of all the footage you could have shown you pick out a play where Hayne fails to run down Cherry-Evans, dives to make the tackle as DCE swerves and misses him?! Hardly a crime worth highlighting. Quite sure you could find a missed tackle from every player in the NRL. But it was a great Manly try so I enjoyed that aspect of the video!

Here's some bizzare Hayne behaviour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrNG1TzBxzY watch Hayne, number 6, from 22:30 in this video. Baffling, esp the bit where he chases Evans and slides to the ground?!?!

Ive only missed watching one Eels game all year, the first one. Since then in his best game he could have gotten 9/10! However, he muffed the 1st bomb of the game - Titans try soon after. He did some magical things in this game, a one-handed goalline defensive catch off the ground and a offensive bomb for try catch. Hayne also let the final bomb of the game bounce and the Titans scored the winning try. Versus the Tigers and Bulldogs he was very ordinary. He must be moved to 5/8th or lock. He is very talented in my opinion, but needs to take on Thurston-like hustle. Get involved more. Why Kearney and Stuart have Hayne at FB baffles me.

We can talk about player depth and coaching staff forever, but here are the things Parramatta need to work on: Parramatta by the numbers – averages to Round 7: - Their Penalty Ratio is 0.78, which is the lowest in the competition - They make 141 Runs/game, the lowest in the competition - Which is caused by the worst Possession stats in the game, 47.5% - Metres gained at 1233 is second only to the Tigers (1193 as of Round 7) - Completions are low, but similar to Manly, Storm and Cowboys ... the difference being Possession and Metres gained - Opposition Completions at an average of 29.1 are the highest in the competition, demonstrating a lack of pressure applied) - Offloads/game are the lowest of any team, indicating little urgency with the ball either - Halves tackles, a favourite metric of mine, is the lowest of all teams (6.% of all tackled made), meaning they are not doing enough work to alleviate pressure on bigger men and ball runners - Total halves runs and kicks are also below par, culminating in less than half the Panthers’ kicks last week (what was their game plan? Play in their own half?) - Tries against are the highest in the league (obviously) - Tries against them from kicks are nearly 40% of all tries, meaning they also have a poor aerial defence. Clearly they need to try something to liven up the desire in the team, which the stats above indicate could be a whole lot better. They also should stop talking about Hayne at 5/8 and just do it. Somebody needs to threaten the opposition line, and Parramatta are not using him the way the Rabbitohs, Storm, Bulldogs and Manly utilise their fullbacks, which is a complete waste of everybody’s time.

A lot of the really good players will have the measure of Ricky now and he is probably the reason they are walking away. Maybe that is why he has been looking in the UK where they will mainly be going off his reputation on paper. I think those ex-Superleague boys might get a rude awakening when they get here and I don't mean the competition.

As an outsider looking in, it seems to me that Parra is a club with a fractured culture at the Board level http://www.crikey.com.au/2013/03/26/parramatta-puppet-show-nrl-club-chairman-in-online-war/

Wonder how the eels would go if you added SBW, Jennings and Maloney to the squad??? Or say Izzy Falou, Quade Cooper, and Greg Bird?? Ricky Stuart tried really hard to recruit well and failed. So maybe the Queston should be 'why won't anybody go to the Eels??' Don't we always hear about players wanting to give everything for the coach? So if nobody wants to sign with the Eels and the current players are taking things a bit easy, it can't look good for the coach..... Surely. Sure Ricky did OK at origin, but he still lost.... And he did OK at the Roosters, but he did inherit a pretty solid team. Any success at the sharks will potentially be tarnished by the AASADA claims. He got sacked as Kangaroos coach... Is Ricky the answer??

I disagree with this for 2 reasons 1) The coach gets to build the team thus over time the team will reflect the true abilities of the coach. 2) Its the coach that is supposed to be able to match skill sets so that they complement each other and then weld them into a team. It is then the coaches job to motivate that team to achieve. Give me a high riding motivated Toyota Cup team over a demoralised NRL one any day of the week. A good example is how Craig Bellamy took the shambles of a team post 2010 and won the minor premiership 1st year out. Bellamy was left with the big 3 battered after salary cap scandal plus a rag tag group of youngsters and rejects and produced a winning team. And before you say the big 3, 3 men don't win football games no matter how good they are. Stuart is a liability and sadly, Eels fans will come to see that I am right.

"The team is lacking confidence, motivation and determination" And not just that, they lack a true leader figure. Someone everyone can aspire to both off field and on. Hindmarsh is sorely missed not necessarily for his game but for his presence.
