Channel Ten to screen 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics

Channel Ten has been awarded by the IOC the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, acquiring broadcast rights across all media platforms in Australia.

IOC President Jacques Rogge said, “Australia is a sports loving nation with passionate Olympic fans, and therefore we are very pleased to be able to announce this agreement with Ten to ensure fantastic broadcast coverage of the Olympic Winter Games.”

Channel Ten CEO Hamish McLennan said the move was part of an overall strategy by the network to invest more in sport.

“We are delighted that Ten will be Australia’s Olympic network in 2014,” Mr McLennan said.

“The agreement with the IOC delivers on our strategy to increase our investment in premium sport. Australia will field its largest-ever Winter Olympic team at Sochi, and we are confident that some of those 56 athletes will be among the Games’ star performers.

“We are also confident that Australian viewers and advertisers will embrace our coverage of the Sochi Games.”

Ten has also bid $500 Million for the Australian Cricket TV Rights for five years, after missing out on the AFL, NRL, horse racing, football and V8 Supercars TV rights and pulling the plug on the Australian Open Golf.

Ten’s has also bid to overtake Nine’s $45 million paid annually to cover international cricket.

Nine’s deal gives the network the last rights of refusal – effectively, a chance to match any bid from rival networks to televise cricket.

Ten will also bid for the Australian Open Tennis TV rights.

Channel Ten will definite have BBL. Well done Ten. Hamish is just dominating James in the space of 2 months when James was serving for additional 1 year.

It seems only a few years ago that Ten hardly had anything to show in its sports portfolio. With 10 now getting the rights to the Winter Olympics, as well as getting the rights to the Wallabies v Lions series, the possible inclusion of international cricket, the possible return of V8 Supercars plus the NBL, is it any wonder that Ten is now the no.2 behind Seven when it comes to showing big time sport?

I hope so too. That means Ten will have F1, MotoGP, V8s, CA, Hopman Cup, Rugby Union, Ironman and NBL

With the V8 Supercars & Sydney to Hobart Race TV Rights soon expiring, I would think that Channel Ten may secure the Rights to Both Events.

I am Predicting that the International Test, One Day & Twenty-20s will continue to screen on Nine (Although there will be no Bill Lawry & Tony Greig) whereas Ten will Screen the Domestic Big Bash League Tournament. In this new Broadcast Rights I am hoping that Viewers in Perth & Adelaide will get to see the entire International Test & One Day Matches played in those Cities. If Ten gets the Cricket then I would like to see Drew Morphett be the Host & face of Channel Ten's Cricket Coverage as well as Mark Taylor, Glenn McGrath, Tom Moody, Brett Lee, Ian Healy, Adam Gilchrist, Brendan Julian & Tim Lane be Part of Ten's Cricket Coverage.

Come on Ten! You are the best by securing the rights to Winter Olympics and CA rights and they should renew their contract for the Hopman Cup or they should go for the whole lot. Ten is the home of F1 and MotoGP. With V8s up for renewal next year they should secure the rights to it as 7 seems just don't want it anymore, Ten does Albert Park best. No doubt Ten will also secure the 2016 Rio Olympics

This is good news for Olympics fans. Channel 10 IMHO does an excellent job covering the F1 and they will do the same at Sochi. Here's hoping they get the Cricket!
