Warner targets media in Twitter rant

Australian cricketer David Warner is likely to face disciplinary action from Cricket Australia (CA) after he apparently launched a scathing attack on two journalists on social media on Saturday.

Warner took to Twitter to launch his expletive-laden tirade directed at News Limited journalists Robert Craddock and Malcolm Conn after taking exception to an article published by Craddock which was critical of the Indian Premier League.

Warner is currently competing for the Dehli Daredevils in the high-profile tournament which was rocked this week by accusations of spot fixing against three players, including Indian Test paceman Shanthakumaran Sreesanth.

Warner, who has over 190,000 followers on Twitter, labelled one of the journalists a “p**ck”, says they “talk s***” and brands the other an “old fart” in his explosive series of tweets on Saturday.

Both Craddock and Conn responded to the abusive tweets sparking a back-and-forth exchange.

To Craddock, one tweet said: “Shock me @crashcraddock1 talking s*** about ipl jealous p**ck. Get a real job. All you do is bag people. #getalife”.

He went on to write: “All he did was talk s*** about the greats now he sucks up there (sic) ass. Talk more crap why don’t you.”

When Conn came to the defence of his colleague Warner responded: “are you still talking you old fart, no wonder know one buys your paper.”

It has not been confirmed whether Warner’s Twitter account has been hacked.

CA are believed to have already contacted Warner over the incident.

The NSW batsman was out for a duck in Delhi Daredevils’ seven-run loss to Kings XI Punjab on Thursday night.

Warner averaged 24.3 on the failed India tour recently. The recall of Chris Rogers for the Ashes has placed his spot in the team under scutiny.

CA released a brief statement later on Saturday confirming they were investigating the matter.

“Cricket Australia is aware of comments made on David Warner’s twitter account overnight,” the statement read.

“Cricket Australia is attempting to contact Warner and will continue to investigate the matter.

“Cricket Australia will make further comment once it has conducted a thorough investigation.”

I'm with Warner on this 1, I personally think he chose the wrong time and went about it the wrong way, his choice of words was poor but good on him for standing up for himself and what he believes! Too often Journalists and the Media are happy to dish it out and say whatever they wish and put their opinions on people but aren't prepared to cop it in return, Robert Craddock's article was terrible he mentioned he went to the IPL a few years and cited sources but wrote this article now and went as a Journalist not as player or official so you'd think times changed and would be different if you'd be been there and done it! If you're happy to dish it out then you need to be prepared to take it but given the Media has an outlet it discourages people from having an opinion or a right of reply in the press and sportspeople then get bagged for not doing interviews or giving an honest political line reply to questions! You can't have it both ways people and if you're happy to dish it out then be prepared to take it return! Good on Dave Warner

The journo's wouldn't have had any say in what picture went with the article. That is the job of the editors. Warner could just have relevantly had a go at Rupert Murdoch and told him to get a real job.

You write an article like that, hinting at a high-profile Aussie player misbehaving, and put Warner's photo to the article? And the journalists are blameless? Give it to 'em Davey.

Correct re: Conn's interaction. It's a two way street. Yet only one party get's the blame and coverage? No one was the winner. By the way had anyone read Craddock's article? It really isn't very good (full of hyperbole and vagueness) and Warner was right to have a go at such a poor piece. It wasn't the right approach but I can't blame his intent.

Well Disco, the "media" can say whatever they (or it) wants about anyone, without any morality whatsovever. And the players can't say "short". They literally cannot say it and fishes doesn't get it. Get it?? Fishes doesn't Warner's comments offensive at all, and wants to do something rude to the Australian media, with his thing. The Australian media is one of the most hopelessly pathetic on the entire planet, and David Warner enjoys seafood. Hey fishes (sic), are you David Warner?

It would be a little over-the-top for CA to punish Warner for this. I don't agree with the manner of Warner's rants, but he's entitled to an opinion. The fact that he's frankly an imbecile is there for all to see, and he has every right to display his lack of intellect. He's just made a complete ass of himself, so no need for punishment! This is the second time in a couple of months that he's made a goose of himself on Twitter, with that ill-advised gloating towards the Indians when Australia was already down 3-0. Facepalms all round... By the way, I didn't think Malcolm Conn's retorts on Twitter were exactly the acts of a model professional either. It's understandable for a frustrated cricketer getting caught up in an online slanging match, but absolutely inexcusable for an experienced journalist to do the same. Seriously, his employers should be having some stern words with him, but I doubt this will be the case in Australia's modern mainstream media. He'll probably be praised for adding more notoriety to this storm in a teacup...
