Channel Nine's Broncos love-in continues to frustrate

By NF / Roar Guru

It’s no secret the Brisbane Broncos have dominated free-to-air television to the point of it becoming a running gag.

They are known to many as the Friday Night Broncos.

Every 7.30pm in Queensland on a Friday is most likely going to be a Broncos game.

But in my view the majority of league fans are sick of it.

So when the Cowboys get a free-to-air slot they get shunned by the Broncos within the North Queensland region via delayed telecast which has angered Cowboys supporters.

Through common sense and logic, the use of regional affiliates can showcase Cowboys live in North Queensland, while the other affiliates carry the Broncos game.

But it won’t happen as Broncos are Channel 9’s golden child.

Both the Cowboys and Titans get little free-to-air in comparison to the Broncos, so it is consider golden to when the opportunity arises for there supporters to see there team free but even then the Broncos remain prominent.

Ideally, all three Queensland teams should have a a greater spread of Friday night games in the future once the current TV deal expires as 9’s Bronco centricism is clean as day.

Perhaps on another TV channel there would be greater equality to not just the Queensland teams but to the entire NRL as certain teams rarely get free-to-air time at all such as Canberra and Cronulla.

Overall, a delayed telecast is minor in the scheme of things but it be nice if Nine finally used their resources to good use in regards to rugby league coverage.

Here we go again 3rd week in a row in brisbane. 1st 2nd plays 4th - we get bronocs and 16th , then 2nd plays 5th , we get broncos and 12th, At least they play 7th tonight. As a rabbit supporter not happy- refuse to watch at 9.30- with kids- we go elsewhere. 3rd week in a row. Are you listening ch 9 The broncos get prime time every friday guaranteeing sponsors coverage. Townsville and Gold coast not to mention all other teams have it unfair. At least next week for some odd reason teh games thursday allowing everyone to watch a high quality game souths v easts. b

Id like to see different teams of a friday night, and only think it fair from a sponsorship poimnt of view that teams get that chance to attract sponsore via the free to air telecast. Everyone agrees that Channel nines commitment is to the amount of viewers, hence the broncos, but not by thier own fault) I think the way to adress this is for the NRL, to have TV stations have a use it or lose it policy, if a tv station cannot broadcast a live match, then then the other match should be offered out to other free to air providors. with the provision of live only broadcasting.

In a perfect world the coverage would be shared, but the game needs to be profitable and the broncos have the biggest TV ratings. They also average around 30,000 people at the games. As a broncos fan it's good for me, but understand why it's frustrating for supporters of other teams. The broncs arn't doing so well this year so maybe fan numbers will drop off and things will change.

As a Broncos fan I can appreciate the frustration and I agree with it. Having my team play just about every home game on a Friday night means I can't realistically take my young kids to a game. However, the Cowboys actively pursue Saturday night games to allow their geographically dispersed fanbase a chance to cover the huge distances they need to get to the game and home again.

Simple fact is there are too many Sydney teams, that don't have enough support from the most fickle sports fans in Australia, and possibly the world, Sydneysiders. That's no one turning up to games, and no one watching it on TV in NSW. Queensland has the crowds and ratings, because its consolidated. Cut the glut, and it could be possible that NSW could garner more interest in the sport they claim they love. I did say its possible, as chances are Sydneysiders that hate everything, wouldn't turn up if it was free and David Smith piggybacked them to the game.

Our so known minor club is just as big as Brisbane mate.......here's a fact, over the last few years cowboys have had the edge by beating broncos more often. They are no longer the little brothers or minor club. So come up with a better excuse for your reasoning "whinging." It's been around the nrl now mate, people find cowboys more exciting to watch then the broncos. They have been off to a slow start this year but they are still known as a major team of queensland today.

nah u guys are living in a fairy land they have to show what rates. simple as that. all this talk of brisbane jealousy (they have one a city all to themselves) is plain psychpathical. its like people would wish that not to be so just to get their own team on the telly. it will never be fair because sporting comps are top-heavy, like it or not. and in australia geographically so. but does it have to change somewhat? yes, but it wont for 5 years. get used to it. and i wish people didn't begrudge those that do get on tv. foxtel is under 50 bucks a week is it not, at the moment

I have no fondness for channel nine however they have invested heavily into the NRL and therefore need to get a return on that investment. It appears their research has indicated they attract greater sponsorship and therefore get more money by showing the Broncos, in Brisbane, live, on a Friday night. While that continues to happen it will continue to happen. It's a business decision end of story.

What the NRL and Channel 9 contractual arrangements over-looked is that many other clubs in the NRL have fans throughout the country. Queensland may very well have 3 teams in the competition, but there are many fans who follow other clubs. I have friends who follow Canberra, St. George and Cronulla for varying reasons, others the Cowboys, Titans and Broncos. When the Storm played the Bulldogs last year in Mackay it was a sell-out. With the majority of spectators openly displaying their love of their clubs. A wonderful day of rugby league, albiet the weather could have been kinder and the fact that my team lost. :-/ Must have pleased the NRL heirarchy, because this year the Bulldogs will play the Knights in round 17 at Virgin Stadium. The Melbourne Storm, last years Premiers, have had very few games televised thus far this year, with their next "prime time" game being in Round 14. Rugby League was a game derived by the people, for the people and when that is lost or disrepected, the game will die a slow death. The fans simply want a fair distribution of televised games, that is reflective of the support across the NRL - It's certainly not a simplistic as keeping the hoards happy by televising one Queensland team on Friday night at 7:30pm with a delayed telecast of a NSW/Melbourne team, that finishes close to midnight and later if you live in Perth or New Zealand ... In the technological world today, the results are on tap on your mobile phone - Who really needs to sit at home and watch a game that they don't give a fig about. With a little luck and prosperity, Who knows what technology will provide in the near future for us fans who feel we're being duped each and every week.

maybe the NRL should look at the fox AFL deal. The AFL fox footy channel ratings in Australia are huge.

Yeah this is true, but the NRL are the ones who allowed this situation to transpire. Streaming sites alleviate much of this grief... Get yourselves an Apple TV or similar and send the free live stream of foxtel games straight to your TV. Fantastic feeling to stick it to the money grabbers.

I think the reason we are having this debate is cause of Foxtel. If that didn't exist there would be no complaints. Thanks a lot Foxtel u have ruined rugby league for raiders, titans, panthers, warriors and sharks fans

no the reason Brisbane is a popular team is not cause of their stadium (if it was people would go out to the footy) its cause they have one team for an entire rugby league loving city - can u imagine what crowds and tv audiences would be like if there was only one sydney team...

Please explain. Pretty sure I just pointed out how it is unfair to other clubs from a business point of view and also for the fans when you guys got all high and mighty saying you basically deserve it because you're 'bigger' than other clubs. Do you see how arrogant that is? What is ironic about that????
