Josh Reynolds confirmed in NSW State of Origin I team

By The Roar / Editor

The 2013 NSW State of Origin team has been finalised, with Josh Reynolds beating John Sutton in the race to come in for injured Blues utility Kurt Gidley.

The 24-year-old Reynolds has been in sparkling form for the Bulldogs this season, steering around the side from five-eighth, but has also played as halfback and hooker.

Reynolds edged out Rabbitohs five-eighth John Sutton for the 17th position, after both players had been called into camp on Tuesday night following confirmation of Gidley’s unavailability due to a foot ligament injury suffered in the Knights’ loss to the Warriors.

He joins Andrew Fifita, Blake Ferguson, and James Maloney as one of four debutants in the NSW State of Origin side.

While many had expected the older, more experienced Sutton to be named in the side, some believed Reynolds’ pacy, fearless approach should see Blues coach Laurie Daley pick the Bulldogs five-eighth for the position.

John Sutton will be 18th man for NSW in Game I, meaning that he is free to play for South Sydney against Newcastle on Saturday night.

More to follow.

CORRECTION: After the official NSW Rugby League Twitter account announced Sutton as Gidley’s replacement, before deleting the tweet and correctly naming Reynolds. The Roar initially published that Sutton had been named before correcting the headline.

Well done Laurie for picking a side he thinks will do the job for all NSW Fans and supporters all over Australia and the rest of the world. The selection of this year's NSW Origin team this is clearly based on Loyalty and Form so let all criticisms rest until the end of Game 1 on Wednesday night because conclusions might jump on those who conclude too early. Go the Mighty Blues!!

He's a very underrated ball player and work horse he may be behind a dominant pack but you still must deliver which he has done each week. The positive for Souths is he's now available against Newcastle...

I am really happy with this selection. Sutton would have been able to play backrow/lock but Reynolds might not even get any game time. That is a ridiculous decision (from the Blues perspective) to waste a bench spot on a player that might not even take to the field. Oh well, just helps out our cause. It's like having Mick Ennis Mk 2 in the squad. I won't be surprised if he gives away a penalty when the Blues are leading with 10 to go and the Maroons capitalise and steal the match.

Look, I hate Reynolds and cringed at his announcement on the team too, but in the best case scenario (where Maloney, Pierce or Farah don't get injured playing) he won't even make it on the field so his impact will be zilch. And in hindsight, I now see that we don't need another second rower in the side and as such Sutton's primary use would be at five-eighth whereas Reynolds covers 5/8, Half, Hooker and Lock and thus is more a utility than a simple backup for Maloney. Read this : h ttp://nrl.com/coach-daley-happy-with-reynolds-decision/tabid/10874/newsid/72608/default.aspx. Also, we lost by 1 point last series? How could you call this a mistake on Ricky's part? The team he put on the paddock lost the game by a field goal of which is the closest to winning you can just about get. Ricky Stuart did a fantastic job and blues performed superbly. I doubted his choices on players last year but because of them we almost won. So my advice to you and the other haters of Daley's decisions is to back him up not only because of what I said before but also because the choice is made and you're going to have to live with it.

Soapit, with a bit more thought, he could have been behind an excellent pack, I am worried that the NSW pack seems to be made up of great forwards carrying niggling injuries and quite a few 'penalty magnets in their midst, To beat Queensland you need an excellent kicking game to keep em in their own half and a structured defence that do not give silly penalties to help them get into your half, a simple enough game plan, but do we have the right pack chosen to follow this plan, Thuggery has not worked for the last four years, a fresh plan is needed!. maybe Laurie can do this, if he does we are in for a good series.

I misread this article, I thought that John Sutton had the opposition, One apology to Meesta Daley, you chose the better of the two, still not convinced that Blues need a utility player on the bench though... maybe I am wrong, time alone will tell.

perhaps because those stats were accrued behind the dominant pack in the comp. he wont have that luxury in origin and he didnt do much in all the years before getting this pack advantage.

I hope Sutton gets a run in the series, he deserves it as does Merritt although his papers have been stamped it seems.

No. 2 player in the top team? Didn't realise Sam Burgess was available for the Blues. You are right! I can't believe he wasn't picked!

Just read the NSW eligble No. 6 player stats ...can someone with a brain please explain why Sutton was not first picked at 6? His stats are leaps ahead of Maloney, Carney and J Reynolds!!! Clearly Laurie has not been watching this seasons matches? People can spin it all they like but when Chris McQueen can make the Qld team who are 7-0 one must ask why the number two player in the top team can't make NSW.... And we wonder why we are 7-0 down

'Sparkling form' who have the dogs beaten that will feature deep into the finals? Call it what u like but Sutton is a major reason Souths are where they are....

No Sutton clearly no idea. Best 6 in NSW by miles. 8-0 here we come! Best bit to hear will be Lauries reason why qldrs would be laughing their ar5es off... Basically he has come in and made all the same mistakes Ricky did. It's ok if u make a mistake but when u repeat others you really are a dud...

Reynolds? He brings nothing to the team. Sutton has it over Reynolds in spades. Not just that, Reynolds is there to cover for Gidley, why was Gidley selected in the first place. He never 'stood up' on the Origin stage, not once. But Reynolds! Holy shiznit! He has no clue. NSW people always talk about 'mongrel' winning games. That's BS. QLD don't have mongrel, they have class/quality. That inner belief (which can sometimes be looked on as arrogance) is what gets QLD over the line every time. Carney has it. The 2013 version of Sutton has it. Even Maloney has a bit of it. But Reynolds, nah! not at all. He's all mongrel, and that's the last thing NSW need. We need quality and that intangible X factor. In saying that best of luck to Reynolds, I hope he proves me wrong. Carn the Roaches!!!
