Is Daley feeling the pressure already?

By djcooper / Roar Guru

This week on the Sterlo league show, Laurie Daley’s reaction to a flippant comment made by politician Clive Palmer caught everyone off guard and suggests that maybe the stress levels created by rugby league’s showpiece event is catching up with the usually calm and collected Daley.

Palmer, referring to Johnathan Thurston stated that he is “the best half halfback in the world, we know that and those grubs Laurie Daley and those guys they know that too and they are desperate to win and they will do anything”.

Crossing back to the studio a deadpanned Daley responded with “that’s very disappointing, I don’t know Clive Palmer at all. Obviously he is a very proud and passionate Queenslander but someone that wants to put himself out there in politics and wants to rule this country …ummm…I find those comments very disturbing”.

Host Peter Sterling attempted to move the conversation onto a lighter note but it was clear to fellow panel members Mathew Johns, Mark Gasnier and NSW fullback Jarryd Hayne that Palmers comments had struck a nerve with the usually laid back Daley.

All seemed bemused by Daley’s reaction as it was quite obviously attempted humour and passion showed by Palmer which is common at this time of year.

Perhaps most perplexing to the panel members was the fact that Palmer’s comments were run with similar but standard outlandish comments from Tommy Raudonikis which indicated that this piece should have been taken for the grain of salt it was intended.

Judging by Daley’s reaction though it seems that stress levels are high and with six days still to go before game one this must be very unsettling for his players.

It will be interesting to see if he can get his emotions in check and ensure that the game isn’t played by his NSW players before next Wednesday night.

Congratulations on being the first person to raise Daley's reaction to these comments djcooper. Wouldn't think there was any need for Palmer to apologise though because I thought the thing everyone loves about origin is that it stirs everyones emotions.

couldve gambled on TRex from the bench, 10 min.s before half time and ten minutes before fulltime see if he finds his feet off the bench against a tiring Q side,

Loz took the bait, hook, line and sinker. He really should have taken it with a grain of salt. It was a light hearted barb and Loz should have laughed it off. You need a thick skin in that gig as every man and his dog has an opinion. Furthermore Palmer is a football man anyway so Loz should have shrugged it off. Come on Blues !

Thanks EJ.I had just about successfully erased every memory cell of that living hell out of my head.I take your word for it,because It'll start me crying if I go back there...but the point is Robbie gets injured ,to my mind, about as rarely as Cam.They don't cover him,and tell me a more valuable maroon, yet we do.I like Reynolds as a player,a real thorn in the side and hope he gets on to put pressure on their kickers.

After Bellamy quit the gig, the NSWRL implemented a condition that the Blues Head Coach couldn't have an NRL coaching gig. Stuart actually wanted to stay on coaching the blues but once he signed to coach the Eels he couldn't - the NSWRL Board wouldn't budge on the condition.

Short memory TE. Farah was knocked unconscious in the decider last year by Myles' oversized melon. Rendered Farah useless afterwards. I'm not necessarily a fan of the utility but I can understand why Daley has moved in that direction. We are already going to dominate in the forwards so probably no need to bring in another big guy. Only Scott, Te'o and Gillett are in form. Thaiday has played himself into a bit of form over the last 2 weeks, but I don't rate him playing in the middle. Losing Hannant is huge for the Maroons. Reynolds gives us a slight POD on the bench. If he is only used for 5mins then that means we have got through unscathed. But we will be glad we have him if Farah or the halves go down.

Clive Palmer. He's the bloke who wants to build a replica of the greatest failure in naval history, right? Why is anyone listening to this self-promoting cretin?

Anyone who takes ANYTHING Clive Palmer says in the media seriously is deluded. The man is the ultimate attention seeking media tart... Just do not take any notice of him at all and he might go away... Note: I am a proud QLDer
