Genia supports under-fire Wallaby O'Connor

By Jim Morton / Roar Guru

Wallabies vice-captain Will Genia has changed tack and endorsed new halves partner James O’Connor despite warnings he’ll be exposed at five-eighth by the British and Irish Lions.

Former Lions playmaker Stuart Barnes has shone the spotlight on backline utility O’Connor’s selection at No.10, stressing Australia will lose Saturday week’s first Test with him in the pivotal position.

The Melbourne Rebels star has played just one of his 37 Tests at five-eighth – way back in December 2011 – and Barnes feels his lack of experience would make him a massive weak link against the Lions.

But Genia, who previously wished coach Robbie Deans would show faith in Reds teammate Quade Cooper, was confident O’Connor was shaping up nicely for the three-Test series.

The world-class halfback said the pair had quickly struck up a strong combination, on and off the field, in training and planning over the past two weeks.

“The good thing about James is he’s really open and he doesn’t push back,” Genia told AAP. “He’s happy to adapt and happy to learn.

“I really enjoy working with him.

“We’ve worked hard going through plays and going through the structure that we want the team to play to make sure we are on the same page.”

The underdone O’Connor has had his workload carefully managed while in camp this week due to muscle tightness, sitting out an opposed session against a Sunshine Coast club team.

As part of a cautious approach, fellow backline spark Kurtley Beale and No.8 Wycliff Palu were also rested from training on Friday morning but winger Digby Ioane did return to team training for the first time following knee surgery.

Englishman Barnes said he rated O’Connor highly as a fullback but doubted he could handle the shift to No.10 in the pressure and intensity of a Lions series.

“I just think with his lack of experience and the fact he’s so much in the traffic, the Lions will get to James O’Connor and I think that could be a massive weak link,” he said on Fox Sports’ Rugby HQ program.

Although Genia last month made it known Cooper was his preferred halves partner, and felt his Queensland teammate brought out the best in his own game, he denied he had any problems with Deans’ decision.

“As a mate, for (Cooper), it’s obviously disappointing but, once you are here, you put a line through it and you move on,” he said. “I think that’s the important thing.

“This group is here and striving to achieve something successful and you have to have buy-in from everyone.

“You can’t have guys sooking or worrying about this or that.”

I’ve said this once before, but at the risk of having myself ‘moderated’ again, I’ll persevere. Stop disparaging the decision made by Deans to play O’Connor in place of Cooper. Deans has made the choice, now get back to supporting O’Connor and the rest of the Wallabies. Give them heart. Despite the Pommy pundits who spruik O’Connor’s shortcomings, I think he’ll make a great 5/8th and will have an excellent game. I hope Deans allows him to play an expansive game—go fast and go hard.

Of course you're welcome to comment WRM but when you're as prolific and aggressive as you are people can get the hump. You mention people attacking you but you seem to be very on the front foot to me. Like your comments to Peter above. Inflammatory and a bit juvenile. Glad you're not going anywhere but I have to ask, have you made that statement before? "When hate is being rammed down everyone's throat - I will be there!!! Maybe on the deck at home with your undies on the outside and the wind flapping the tea towel cape around your neck. No?

All I said was how much you comment on Aussies, nothing about any players but I will takes your commas on face value with regard to your posting habits.

At least Cooper has performed ie played! . Beale has played 3 super rugby games and a club game over 3 months. JOC has lost all 5 recent games he played in at number 10 (while defending at 15) and barnes has played 1 and a bit games spread over 3 matches ????? Seems you either have to not play or play out of position to be the favourite for number 10. Hopeless. Picking on anything other than form guarantees failure!

Note all of the people attacking me personally are staunch Deans haters and Quade supporters. They have given up arguing their points and are trying to remove opposition to their pov. I wont be going anywhere and as long as you keep ramming hate down everyones throat I will be there.

Justin I was talking about Cooper, Deans and JOC when you two chimed in so I dont see why you are mystified there and its not exactly stupifying considering thats what we differ on, Cooper and Deans. I post on here because ABs.com closed comments down on the articles and because this site is pretty cool considering you can write your own articles. It has its draw backs because every 2nd story is written to provoke debate over Deans or Cooper and I wish that other countries teams and players got more interest but whatever. The reason I post so much is usually because another poster will be negative and be what I see to be inflamatory by attacking players and coaches and if I see that as unjustified I will reply and then I get caught up. Although I am NZer half of my family either lives in Aus or has spent a long time over there as I have. Aust is my 2nd team. Most other countries interest me but I am passionate about 2. I dont have to justify myself to anyone but I do feel Im entitled to comment and I do feel everyone else does too. I just wish more Australians were like "we are going to kick your butt NZ!" instead of "our team sucks and Deans is killing our rugby team". Come on Justin, wheres the positivety from Aust? Your team is awesome and could beat anyone but you guys seem to be so negative. Maybe its because I want Aust to be strong and confident, the team that NZ respects and I see a team thats trying very hard to earn its own fans respect despite it position in the big picture. I think you guys dont appreciate how well you do and expect far too much.

They apparently did have one, ABs or something. Under Well Ruck Me WRM admitted that he multi nicked and was part of the reason the comments section got shut down.

I just don't understand the fascination, bordering on obsession for another nations sporting team. and you continue to bring up Cooper, neither Peter or I have in this exchange. odd in my opinion but the internet is all of ours...

Do you disagree Dan H, heavyd (DH, HD) Jiggles? Come on dude, that guy not only had the same initials as the guy he was sticking up for but he also spoke for him and said what "we" really meant before backtracking as quickly as possible and accusing me of being multiple posters. Im not KPM or A Different Call, I am the the other guy you mentioned (W.R.M) but I was unable to post as that name for some reason. I think it was because I said that I hoped an international team would lose for resting all of its best players before getting thrashed. That was the only post of mine removed that I know of. Perhaps I recieved too many complaints. Who knows but whatever. This is the internet dude and not all is as it seems but I can assure you I do not post under any other name besides WRM.

And for the record JOC scared the bejesus out of me. I worry about his variety and option taking. Deans may very well be walking a tightrope, but I'm hoping this side works together. I also doubt as some cynical posters have said... that Genia needs cue cards or would say something he doesn't believe in. They are ignorant comments which disrespect, the entire team as well as Will. As vice captain he has a duty to lead and get this team to gel. If boofhead on here don't understand those responsibilities, perhaps they could do with educating themselves.

Yeah I really like Australian rugby Justin. Not a fan of Quade but a real fan of guys like Genia, Higginbotham, MMM, Horwill, AAC, Folau and Hooper. No country seems to produce players quite like Australia. Take Hooper for example, what a freak he is for an openside. I know you dont like my opinion but dont pretend I shouldnt comment because Im not Australian. Its because Im not Australian and you dont like my opinion and you wouldnt even mention my birth place if it wasnt for my opinion. The truth is that everyone is acting like Quade not playing is an outrage but in my opinion its normal because Quade has not performed well enough. You could argue that he is the best option but I think recent history tells us the opposite. Quade could have been amazing against the Lions but Deans has rolled that dice quite a few times and he has never really excelled, at least not recently. All Robbie is doing is trying a different player in place of another that hasnt seemed to work out that well in the past. You dont have to agree with that and I like that people dont but the extreme way that people have responded (not you Justin) is, well EXTREME. Other coaches can argue that Quade should have been selected but by the same token you could argue Deans should not have selected him in 2012 or for the WC in 2011. Its just a matter of opinion and Quade is just another player and just another player that has had questionable form in gold (in my opinion).

Everyone has the right to an opinion PK.... You, me, WRM and all opinions are equally valid. While I don't agree with all WRM's arguments, I agree with his sentiment. Fact is someone with Quade's attitude wouldn't get close to the inside if an AB jersey. But in saying that Australian rugby IMO had lost itself up it's own a$$ for sometime. Gitau Gregan Cooper JOC etc. where's the pride. I have played games under John Hart and other senior coaches and be assured, you pull a stunt like Cooper, you wouldn't be forgiven. They wouldn't give you the time of day. Where is pride in the badge. It's an honour to pull on the Wallaby jersey under any circumstance. People have bled for that jersey. Where was Quade putting the jersey first. Where was his respect. He may as well have spat on the jersey and the coach. I really could care less about the feral comments made by posters here. But you hear that from a supposed Wallaby... they can pss off. I'd run out with 14 players before I tolerated that rubbish.

Peter is such a baby. Still crying cuz his favy wav Quade Cooper has been dropped. Insult me as much as you like Peter, Im not the one trying to convince people Quades defence is good. Great insight from a fellow Kiwi. Just rip your Cooper posters down and start looking at rugby for what it is and not what you want it to be Pete. Then you'll be able to sit with the adults and talk rugby instead of having to try and convince everyone that the truth is actually all a lie and what you want to be true is the real truth. Funny how so many Quade supporters get all sulky and try to attack those who disagree. Says a lot.

but even worse, it is of such a low quality that it is not worth reading. Most kiwi's have far more insight and display more rugby understanding.

That's how I see him too, the nearest thing we've got, potentially, to Dan Carter. It's a little concerning that Toomua is already 23, the same age Carter was in 2005 when he conducted a masterclass in five-eighth play for the All Blacks against the Lions. Give Toomua a go this year, on the five-Test end-of-year tour at least. Give Lealiifano and Godwin a go as well.
