Wales prop arrested in Brisbane on assault charges after Lions win

By The Roar / Editor

Exeter and Wales prop Craig Mitchell has been remanded in custody after allegedly knocking a man unconscious in a Brisbane bar following the British and Irish Lions’ 23-21 win over the Wallabies last Saturday night.

The incident occurred in the Normandy Hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning, with Mitchell reportedly attacking a man who later required stitches below his eye and cheek.

The man, who has been identified by the ABC as Cian Healy, was reportedly attempting to calm down an argument between a group of his friends and Lions fans.

Mitchell was in Australia having completed a two-Test series in Japan with the Welsh national team.

The 27-year-old admitted to assault occasioning bodily harm in a Brisbane magistrates’ court.

He had his application for bail revoked in the after magistrate Anne Thacker expressed concerns about the former Ospreys prop’s ability to pay compensation at short notice.

Mitchell is due to be sentenced today.

Dirk: My post was more in the form of sarcasm. Most of the Lion's fans are expats - who I would think are the least likely to be thugs considering the vetting that occurs when moving here. Mitchell isn't a thug, he just doesn't have too many brain cells and doesn't think before he acts like most rugby players.

When I read this headline I thought it was a practical joke. But no. You couldn't make it up. We haven't even had a Saturday night in Melbourne yet.

If it really was Cian Healy, I`m sure Craig Mitchell would have been the one knocked out.

Let's hope so. We've enough of our own thugs. It's shameful that several thousand more were let in for the sake of a few $

Surely that would have been in the Normanby Hotel - never heard of the Normandy. PS I assume the victim isn't Irish and Lions prop Cian Healy but someone else of the same name?
