Lions team announced for final Test against Wallabies

By The Roar / Editor

British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland has made six changes for the must win third Test at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Saturday.

Alun Wyn Jones replaces the injured Sam Warburton and will captain the side.

Gatland’s biggest surprise is the dropping of Irish star Brian O’Driscoll from the 23-man lineup.

O’Driscoll was one of five Lions pushed to the bench of axed completely from the starting XV that lost 16-15 to the Wallabies in the second Test. Jamie Roberts replaces O’Driscoll.

Brian O’Driscoll is a great player and has had a wonderful career but for the final Test in Sydney we just felt Jamie Roberts’ presence offered us something more,” Gatland said.

“It’s the first time any coach has ever had that decision with him in 15 years of rugby so it’s not easy for that to be the first time.

“But he’s still going to be important for us for the next 72 hours in terms of his experience and leadership.

“Jamie’s back fit and that’s where Jamie’s been given the nod in terms of that partnership with Jon Davies in the midfield.”

“It was tough but but we’ve come up with what we think is a side that’s good enough to do the job on Saturday.”

Irishman Sean O’Brien has replaced Warburton at openside flanker.

Welsh halfback Mike Phillips has replaced Ben Youngs, while compatriots Richard Hibbard and Toby Faletau have also been promoted, along with prop Alex Corbisiero.

Youngs and No.8 Jamie Heaslip has been dropped while flanker Justin Tipuric, lock Richie Gray and English centre Manu Tuilagi will make their Lions Test debuts from the bench.

Ten Welsh players will start for the Lions.

Asked what Wyn Jones would say to Horwill when he shook his hand on Saturday, Wyn Jones replied: “Congratulations”.

Manu makes some impressive runs but his passing is poor at best,:BOD is well past his sell by date. his defensive positioning is good but defense alone will not win the series:Playing JD in his natural slot with a genuine #12 inside him might just get some worthwhile ball to our wings, Aussie defense out there, on the ground, not really been tested,Also we left our best #1 in France & lost 2 more crocked Mako & Corbs need another 4 years to mature Gatland got that wrong took too much notice of RFU politics

You agree with KPM? So what is his actual point? Seems like his usual attention seeking ranting to me. O'Driscoll made two errors in the first Test under that jabroni Pollock, and in the 2nd Test the Lions just kicked. He's done nothing to warrant being dropped, and Davies has done nothing to warrant his conclusion based on the last 2 games.

Jon Se(x)ton after the 2nd Test: “At times it felt as if we were wishing the game to finish rather than going out and going after it. That’s how I felt, anyway.” I think it's fair to consider that this isn't a happy tour for the non-Welsh players. Gatland has made an utter hash of this series, and I'm pretty gutted at the way it's been run even before the tour kicked off. Just like in 2005 I'd rather not have Lions tours if they take place like this. Regardless of the result on Saturday I'm convinced that Gatland has ruined his reputation, and rightly so. The fallout from this tour will be brutal.

Definitely better, except for the line about the Scots. If Gatland & the Lions selectors were truly serious about defeating the Aussies, they would have stacked the squad with Scots, given their recent record against the Wallabies.

Well Robshaw could have gone but I understand why he hasn't, and Care should have gone over Murray, but as we have seen with Youngs, he just doesn't suit the way Gatland wants to play. Brown's the only other one who had a realistic chance but his stint on the wing in the Six Nations didn't help his cause despite playing consistently well for club and country.

So are you suggesting this is payback? Because that particular conspiracy theory WILL occur to someone over there.

Even filled out a Civil Union application with Umaga, not that either of them realised it at the time.

apart from the BOD exclusion, no REAL surprises. what Gatland has done though is gone with a pairing he knows works. Davies was not at his best last week but was playing out of position. Roberts and Davies are a threat playing together. Hibbard? was a toss-up. So i'd have had perhaps 9 Welsh players in the side anyway. Phillips has obviously struggled with an injury, his jog after Genea was shocking to see. THERE you have my main concern. A fit Phillips i'd play all day long. If he IS 100% now, then he will be chomping at the bit to get over that gain line. I see tries in this team selection

This is a must win game for the Lions and BOD hasn't produced. Gatland's call is understandable but Davies' inclusion is baffling. He is a turnstile. Corbisiero's return should further bolster the scrum that eventually dominated the Wallabies in the last Test and O'Brien's inclusion will up the back-row contest too. I hope Phillips has been reading his press because for a bigger half-back his defence has been woeful and he will really need to up his game to contribute. I would have preferred to see Youngs there although he hardly set the world on fire either. The Lions have a pretty strong bench again as well. All in all a a pretty good Welsh Team.

The big issue is not dropping BOD but sorting out the set piece. The lions simply didn't get enough decent clean ball from the lineout and the scrum was a joke. Sorting that out is the first task, the second is getting Roberts on to punch holes at inside centre for the others to run off. If all went to plan, BOD would have been ideal to bring on in the last 20 mins to continue his sterling defensive work. Looking at the line up Gatlands come up with I might have done a couple of things differently but generally agree with what he's done. Where I disagree is having Vanipula on the bench. He should already be on the plane home, he's that big a liability.
