No fairytale year for Malthouse

By Nash Mitchell / Roar Rookie

Carlton has been one of the most disappointing teams so far this year. Sitting 11th on the ladder, with six wins and eight losses, coach Mick Malthouse would not be happy with how his team has played over past the 14 games.

They have a chance to redeem themselves this weekend against Saint Kilda, who they failed lost to in Round 7 by nine points. With a win this Saturday night, Carlton can jump to 10th or ninth depending on how North Melbourne and West Coast go.

Malthouse has had limited talent at his disposal this year, and he would surely be very annoyed not having a full side to compete with each week.

Captain Marc Murphy suffered a broken cheekbone and Jarrod Waite is constantly getting suspended and injured, which has hurt Carlton in many ways.

Waite’s injuries and suspensions have hurt the forward-lines depth and the transitioning from back to forward. Also the options in the forward 50 aren’t as strong as when Waite is in their, being a key forward.

Carlton have lost a couple must-wins – against Saints in Round 7 and Essendon in Round 11 – that could have seen them sat inside the top eight.

This year has been a challenge for Mick Malthouse. With the success he has had in the past 10 years, he must have come to this club itching to win a flag and to have a full on crack at the premiership.

In the next two years Carlton could be hanging around the top three spot with some of the big names (Geelong, Hawthorn and Swans) then Mick Malthouse’s fairy tale could come true.

A lot of money/grantees would have to persuade Lynch to move from Adelaide. He is playing well there, already moved once from saints. Once Walker comes back he could fill Tippet's spot in the team, and thrive possible?

They have a pretty good midfield and ruck division.. backline is ok.. they just dont have enough forwards who can kick goals.. if Waite doesnt play who else can put his hand up?? Might have to consider playing Kruzer in the forward line ala Paul Salmon.. even draft picks take a few years to mature so getting that gun forward that GWS have got their eyes on might not pan out. Might have to try and find room in the cap for someone who can kick 50 goals a year.. Nicoski at West Coast might be let go at the end of the year... might be worth a punt... theres the kid Lynch at Adelaide.. dont know what money he is on.. might be able to get him.. Must be someone at the Giants or Suns who would love to play for the Blues... Judd rotating beetween centre and CHF?? Robert Flower (wingman) played centre half forward for Victoria one year against the Sandgropers..he had a blinder as I recall..

The games past Mick. It's time Mick hung up his boots. And retired as a coach. Thanks Mick.
