Magpies can't win AFL flag, says Sheedy

By Roger Vaughan / Wire

Veteran AFL coach Kevin Sheedy has dismissed Collingwood’s premiership chances, also warning some parts of their list are becoming too old.

Sheedy’s Greater Western Sydney was only two points behind Collingwood at three-quarter time on Saturday at the MCG, before the Magpies kicked clear.

The Magpies are struggling to build momentum with the finals only five weeks away.

Asked about Collingwood as potential premiers, Sheedy told Channel Nine’s Sunday Footy Show: “I don’t think so – I think Hawthorn and I think the Swans are going to get to them again.

“(Saturday) is the only time I’ve seen them and (coached against) them and we’re not exactly in the top eight ourselves.”

Sheedy said if Collingwood were to contend, they must have a flawless campaign for the rest of the season.

“They’re going to have to improve a lot to win a flag,” he said.

“It’s not to say they couldn’t, but you need everything going for you and they won’t want to get any injuries to their major players.

“(Dayne) Beams coming back has been good.

“They probably have to watch they’re getting a little bit too old in the wrong spots.”

Collingwood chief executive Gary Pert said he understood Sheedy’s point, but disagreed.

“It’s a fair view from him watching us last night,” Pert told Nine.

“We had the ball in the forward line a lot and we weren’t able to convert.

“If we can get our best team out there, build some momentum and actually start to get that scoring happening, at our best we can beat any team.”

Most interesting part about Sheedy’s comments was his observation that “They probably have to watch they’re getting a little bit too old in the wrong spots.” Sheedy's well qualified to discuss list management so it would have been good to hear exactly where Collingwood was getting too old. Only place I can think of is the ruck, or maybe with Maxwell and Johnson in the back pockets. Looking at overall youth and depth, the current Collingwood team should be top 4 for the next 5 years (after the hiccup that was 2013).

As a Collingwood Legends member I don't have an issue with Sheedy's comments. I didn't hear how he said it but by the sounds of it he just gave his honest opinion on where our team is at. Judging from the way we've played the last two weeks I think we'll be lucky to make it to week two of the finals... let alone win the flag.

Me a Collingwood supporter.....Hmmmm.....I don't think I been called much worse than that! But I don’t get out much I take it you concede your inappropriate use of statistics…thanks Also my opinion is not relevant to Sheedy’s poor form Tell you what I know this time last year none of us in Sydney were backing the Swans and if we were we wouldn't have expected to be playing Hawthorn for the flag - not sure anyone wasing picking that! Now to me taking umbrage at Sheedy: It is not what he said but the fact that he commented on another team rather than spruik his own This is the premise of my argument from the start He is paid to coach a pretty decent team of young players He should coach his own team by word and deed Time wasting comments about other teams is poor form BTW Do I get a fifty for the Collingwood supporter sledge? Still reckon Pies might be worth a flutter at @ $21 for the flag

How's this news? Sheedy is only saying what everyone apart from Collingwood Supporters already know! Beaten by Gold Coast 1 week then taken deep by GWS.... Sheeds shouldn't be under the pump for this...Unless he came out with Joffa "GAME OVER" Jacket on!

So *you* don't think the Pies will win the flag, but attack Sheedy for saying: “They’re going to have to improve a lot to win a flag,” and “It’s not to say they couldn’t, but you need everything going for you and they won’t want to get any injuries to their major players." Look it's a non-issue and I understand you're a Collingwood supporter. His comments were not only fair and rational, but entirely consistent with what most people would believe...including you.

No, realistically I don't and I am sure I didn't suggest they would Even though according to srportsbet they are fifth favorite and equal to Essendon and better than Richmond to win the flag - so all hope is not lost My point is - It is poor form by coaches to lag on opposition teams Hardly ever happens But Sheedy loves to do it He is now no where near as relevant as he was at his peak And I'd reckon he would do better talking up the performance of his team rather than lagging others - GWS performance on the weekend was just great to watch Pies @ $21 for the premiership reckon we might get more than 1% interested in that!

"two words – “no comment”." ? Why on earth should he respond "no comment" to a direct (and fairly innocuous) question? More to the point, I don't think you know Kevin Sheedy.

Gezza. Do you think the Pies will win the flag in 2013?

What difference does it make as the two teams won’t be meeting again until next year. Sheedy just can’t win with some people.

Cameron really does look the goods. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of $$$$ he and his chums are commanding in 2-3 years. They’ll need a good accountant to keep Cameron, Patton, Ward, Scully, Davis, Coniglio and possibly Franklin under their cap whilst still fielding a team, not a bad problem to have I guess.

Great statistic - what was your margin for error? Coaches tend not to talk down the opposition as it can be used a fodder to fire up the troops Seems you know better than I

two words - "no comment". He allowed them to change focus from the positive to negative, then encouraged it. He has been taking far more time talking about opposition teams, opposition codes lately, and not enough time talking up the positives of his team - which I genuinely feel will do more than GC have this year, in 2014.

Besides which a wise man would judge a sides chances when at its best rather than a performance playing below par Hell I heard Sheddy singing that song a thousand times! I'll miss old grumpy!

"Sad comments from one with such a distinguished record" Huh? I reckon 99 out of 100 people would agree that Collingwood won't win the flag this year. He was directly asked the question and gave his frank opinion. Hardly groundbreaking or bitter, as you imply.

exactly my thoughts Gezza. Yes, Pies were woeful, but on the other hand, GWS showed some fantastic signs. Is there a team in the league that wouldn't want Cameron in their forward line? He should focus on his teams positives, and not make it about his opponents negatives, that's how you encourage your team Sheeds

The wisdom of Solomon.....about the same age too! Sad comments from one with such a distinguished record Love it when they become grumpy old men! Why the hell not brag about the quality in his own side?

Cranky old man, Sheedy, too old to worry about decorum or stepping on toes! He is out of figs to give.
