Newcastle and Cisse at loggerheads over Wonga deal

By Sebi Emi / Roar Rookie

What started out as a smokescreen had within it the seed of unwanted distraction.

Like nectar is to honey, the plot was quite predictable under the circumstances and when a picture of the protagonist leaked in the press, the hum of the drones was clearly heard.

On one hand, it seemed like the player was acting by his faith’s beliefs and who are we to judge, but on the other hand, Grosvenor casino is as synonymous with betting as the collar is to religion.

It is believed that Magpies striker Papiss Cisse, a £9 million capture from German outfit Frieburg in January 2012, did not approve of the new club’s kit which features an emblazoned ‘Wonga’ detail at the front — something that did not bode well with the player’s Muslim beliefs.

Wonga, a payday loan firm, signed an agreement with Newcastle worth £24 million for a period of four years.

The new shirt sponsorship deal takes after a similar sponsorship from Virgin Money last season, which Cisse comfortably donned.

Wonga’s interest rates of 5,853 per cent have been described as “preposterous” in the media by various religious factions.

Among which is the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who intimated that the Church of England would ensure the demise of present-day loan sharks by setting up rival credit unions.

Under Sharia law, Muslims must not benefit from lending money; interest is not paid on Islamic bank accounts or added to mortgages.

However, it appears now that the striker will resume club training with the rest of his teammates who returned from a pre-season friendly in Portugal.

This scenario, best described as a storm in a teacup, would not be the first.

You might recall Malian striker, Frederic Kanoute who plied his trade for Sevilla reaching an agreement with his club to wear an unbranded shirt while they were sponsored by 888.com, a gambling company.

The agreement between Newcastle and Cisse comes on the back of speculation linking the player to possible swap with money rich Anzhi Makhachkala.

For now, it remains to be seen whether Joe Kinnear, Newcastle’s newly appointed director of football will bring in some new faces to the club.

It is understood that a £6.5 million pound has been tabled for Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis and the club is also looking elsewhere to Aston Villa’s Darren Bent who seems to be out of favour at his present club.

HardcorePrawn, That would be tragic, for Newcastle/ EPL. I loved Chris Hughton, i hated the way he was dismissed!

Jayden, skysports reveals that a new bid of GBP 8M was tabled this week for Gomis; probably will have a striker coming in soon.

I think, of more concern than the lack of transfers, is that if Pardew has a run of poor results at the start of the season you face the very real prospect of Ashley sacking him and replacing him with Kinnear. Pardew may have his faults, but anyone can see that he's a better manager than Jokin' 'ere.

Im more worried about our lack of transfers Kinnear really isnt that 'connected' is he? Probably because he misspelt all the contact numbers on his phone As for Cisse, he'll stay, but he really needs a back-up striker. Although Campbell could do the job

I think the player has been to the casino, i just imagine how the new season will pan out for him. He's a massive talent, yes, he might have wanted out but hey if he repays their faith, ala Benteke, this will be soon forgotten. Thank you too for your encouraging feedback :)

HardcorePrawn: I hear you loud; the PR machine might have put out the fire in the meantime but i don't suppose that is for long. I await the derby, and boy i hope he won't be the one finding the back of the net because that would just be... Thanks

More laugh-a-minute japes at the Newcastle United Comedy Club. This was clearly a case of Cisse wanting out (and with Kinnear returning, who can blame him?!) and using his faith as leverage. While many applauded his stance against Wonga, a company that have placed a great many in huge amounts of debt in the UK - and who are about as popular as a bout of scabies as a result - the fact that he is a known gambler (he's a regular at the casino apparently) shows him up for the fraud that he is. As a result he's upset the club's sponsors (but you won't find many complaining about that), the club themselves, the fans, and most probably his teammates and the Muslim community. Still, at least he's provided us Sunderland supporters with a bit more ammunition for the up-coming season. :D

A really interesting topic that I am sure will present challenges in the future. I think Mike Ashley and co. would have been very pleased that Cisse made the visit to the Casino in Newcastle, it meant they could forego making a very tough choice. Nice piece Sebi.
