Are Emirates Team New Zealand the All Blacks of Sailing?

By skippy505 / Roar Rookie

Our Kiwi cousins have managed to master a new, outrageously fast and spectacular sailing class and have thwarted the mighty Oracle Team USA in the seventh race of the Americas Cup.

These foiling cats are a revelation, offering not only amazing TV but also very aggressive and enjoyable racing.

My non-sailing mates have been watching the excellent coverage on Fox sports and are hooked. It is high sport.

The ruthless efficiency, lack of mistakes and super-detailed preparation reminds me of watching the All Blacks.
They give nothing away and just make you pay for every minor error.

The pressure on Oracle Team USA was too much on Wednesday, with skipper James Spithill playing the “Time-out” card and rotating his long-time tactician John Kostecki out for Sir Ben Ainslie.

Desperate stuff which did them no good whatsoever today.

There are plenty of Aussies involved. On the Oracle sailing team is James Spithill, Tom Slingsby and Kyle Langford; while Emirates Team New Zealand have the not-so-secret weapon Glenn Ashby, and Adam Beashel.

Ashby has played a crucial role in Emirates Team New Zealand’s dominant performance: A multiple world champion in cats, he’s helped guide the shape of ETNZ’s winning advantages.

“Corner Speed” is his mantra and ENTZ have it over the Americans.

The next two races are at 6am Sunday morning EST on Fox Sports.

Races are also shown on YouTube on the Americas Cup channel. It’s worth a watch.

where is there any mention of Australia in the article? What a massive chip on your shoulder and inferiority complex you have.

dean you have pretty much defined being a troll on this one today. The topic has been incidental really as you have really had an axe to grind. Quite astonishing. And to prove this if you had a clue about the Americas Cup and the other teams competing you would know that Artemis the Swedish had a team that got knocked out in the LV Cup and during their racing an English gold medal winning Olympian - Andrew Simpson, crew member died. Despite this the owner is keen to go again. You do need to think about your slander here and how ignorant it is.

If NZ win there is talk of the defenders imposing a local crew only policy. Cant verify, just heard it on the radio. I wonder if Iain Murray and John Bertrand would manage an Aussie team in Auckland in 3 - 4 years time, if the kiwis win. Would like to now their thoughts on the 'the Foils' though in the meantime. Its sailing sort of.

why do you ask colvin? as it happen I am a Kiwi, or a New Zealander as I prefer to call it. I was merely attempting to point out to skippy, and any other ockers who might be interested to know, just what insincere ratbags kiwis really are.

hey skippy, in that incident when the Kiwi boat was so very delicately balanced, were you cheering for it to topple over completely or to regain its correct position? Because I can assure you had it been an oz boat 99.95 percent of kiwis would have been cheering for disaster!

As a casual Sailing viewer I have found watch these races really exciting. I can't imagine what it must feel like sitting 10+ metres in the air going very nearly 100kph

The last couple of races have been compelling viewing. Oracle Racing Team USA are getting faster and faster and probably have more potential to improve. Despite the Kiwi's points advantage, if the races resemble anything like the last races then its going to be a brutal battle to take the silver.

You don't say, Colvin? Maybe you are correct, there were other entrants in the Americas cup. (Buggered if I can name who they were though? )You are also correct about Walker following Snell. The reason I did not mention him was because I thought the 1970s was too recent, given your list of Oz achievers in sport. But in that case I think you will be surprised to learn that Oz have had another decent leg spinner since Richie, and have had a decent swimmer or two since Fraser, and hey, they've also had the odd tennis player of note. I should also point out that Herb retired in 1962, while Oz did not have Americas cup success until 1983. So that's a lot of years of growing up going on there, Colvin.

I'm sure you have a point Dean, only I don't know what it is. John Walker won the 1500 meters Olympic Gold after Peter Snell and held the World 1500 meters record for quite a while. Nick Willis won a silver medal in the Beijing Olympics for the 1500 meters. I don't want in any way to diminish the efforts of the other people you mention but believe it or not NZ have had some pretty good swimmers, cricketers and even tennis players over recent years. And as for your "fact" on the America's Cup. I'm sure if you search properly you will find that there's been more entrants this year than just Team New Zealand and Oracle.

So, then, you're not holding much hope for the arrival , any time soon, of the next Peter Snell, Anthony Wilding, Stewie Dempster, Martin Donnelly,Jaynie Parkhouse , Rebecca Perrott? You are correct that there was no Oz entry in the Americas cup, althought to be fair I don't think anyone else entered either, other than NZ, and of course Oracle. But we shouldn't let that fact distract from the stunning world beating achievement of TNZ in bringing the 'ol mug back home'.

Dean, I'm sure Johnno doesn't need me defending him. But Johnno is a absolute sports tragic. All sports, and an enthusiastic Australian and all things Australian sport. His comment above I'm sure came from surprise, I'm sure, at how well Kiwis are doing in international sport, tinged with frustration at some of the recent Oz sports teams. And you could list the Wallabies, the Oz cricket team, the Oz Olympic swimming team, the Oz league team at the last League World Cup, no Oz entry in the America's Cup, and the list goes on. So rather than patronizing, his comments were more along the lines of well done NZ sport. As a Kiwi myself we grew up on Australian sports success. Betty Cuthbert, Dawn Fraser, Evonne Goolagong, Oz success in the America's Cup, Oz cricket, (players like Neil Harvey, Bob Simpson, Alan Davidson, Norm O'Neill, Richie Benaud, Doug Walters) Rod Laver, Lew Hoad, Herb Elliott. We miss the sportsmen/women of this stature in today's Australia. I hope you're correct and Oz does well at the next Commonwealth Games. But I would really like to see Oz produce another Rod Laver and/or Herb Elliott.

ha! What a brown noser! That truly is an utterly pathetic and shameless, obsequious, patronising, and monumental self-flagellation of a post. You should be proud. I especially love the use of the royal 'we'. Where do you keep those gold medals you won in the sailing, if you don't mind me asking? Perhaps we could have a touch of them? But, however, I'm sure you will find that Oz will overwhelm the Kiwis in the medal stakes come the next commonwealth games. They usually do, because Oz are better at most sports than the Kiwis, it's just that there are a lot of other countries in the world that happen to be even better than Oz, but will of course will not be competing at the commonwealth games!

However I dont think we are better than Australia. Aussies just going through a tough period atm. Take a look at this site http://www.greatestsportingnation.com/global-cup-2012/results We are by far the smallest nation in that top 20 list and we are consistently the top dog when it comes to achievement based on size and resources and covering a wide variety of sports. Just shows that we aren’t just rugby as most people think

too bad many of these sports rarely get any mention in the media despite the crumbs they are living off in terms of funding. However I dont think we are better than Australia.
