ARU bash O'Connor with a feather

By David Lord / Expert

Just when the ARU needed to show who was boss with some bottle, the governing body of rugby in Australia has stood down the recalcitrant James O’Connor from the South African and Argentina legs of the Rugby Championship.

The ARU has bashed him with a feather.

You can see where the ARU is coming from. By suspending O’Connor, the Western Force is highly unlikely to sign up the 23-year-old, leaving him rugby homeless after the Rebels sacked him during the season, and the Reds, Waratahs, and Brumbies don’t want a bar of him.

That scenario automatically wipes out O’Connor’s ARU contract, so the ARU has taken the soft option, instead of turning O’Connor’s contract into confetti.

It will be interesting to see the reaction of the senior Wallabies to the feather bashing.

Will they view the ARU as weak and lose respect for their boss, or just be grateful O’Connor won’t be around for the next two Tests to stuff up team culture?

Even more interesting when you listen to newcomer Israel Folau calling on his Wallaby team-mates to bond better off the field, to improve the on-field performance.

Folau’s genuine plea should not fall on deaf ears. He obviously can’t understand why Wallaby team culture is at such a low level.

Nor can anyone else.

What an unholy mess.

Judging by Roarer posts, O’Connor was more than a handful at Nudgee in the school first XV, which produced two Wallaby captains in Mark Loane, and Rocky Elsom, plus hardmen Kevin Ryan, and Duncan Hall, as well as current Wallabies Joe Tomane and Don Shipperley.

Former Wallaby coach Robbie Deans was also far too lenient on O’Connor’s on-going antics, giving him a virtual licence to keep misbehaving.

And to cap all that off, both James Horwill and Nathan Sharpe this week have made it crystal clear O’Connor has lost the respect of the senior Wallabies.

In short, there’s no where left for O’Connor to hide, he is stuffed right across the board.

But this whole sorry and sordid story will be remembered for what the ARU didn’t do, and that was to show O’Connor the exit door, effectively leaving it to the Western Force to do their dirty work.

By the end of the day, from wherever the net result comes from, it’s game, set, and match for James O’Connor in Australian rugby.

Graham woolridge I agree with you that our officials lack guts. But I disagree with you on the appropriate course of action. Money is the problem here and it is doing what it does to every other game. Ruins it. Sponsors are attracted to sport because it commands huge audiences and great loyalty. Then a few non sport loving customers complain about off field rubbish and the sponsors put pressure on because they are worried about their brands. The brands that sport helped build. What we need to do is worry about giving the sport to the people. Does anyone really care if JOC's seating arrangements. No. Oh well with the exception of our bottom feeding news publishers interested in selling papers and hits. It was a non event. Where our administrators are gutless is they should be telling the papers to write some stories on the real issues if the day. Or perhaps stories on how our forwards plant to deliver quality ball to JOC Ethan al. If the was the worst thing to happen in your day you are having a good day.

Graham if you are going to comment at least try to add something new to the discussion. "Gen Y", do you really think that is even an actual thing? Horizontally segmenting populations based on an arbitrarily define year is ridiculous, save for example anything you could deduce from Gen Y growing up with Wikipedia and preceding populations up with the encyclopaedia. Apart from that, the hand with finger you point at JOC has three fingers pointing back at you. I won't articulate it any further in my own words, but share what ibika wrote above: "Strange society.. Absolutely celebrates alcohol consumption ..particularly for men.. Celebrates a yobbo Aussie stereotype for young men.. Absolutely celebrates self centred activity in every aspect of modern relations and life.. ie Make lots of money, get a big house, car, boat blah ..more more more.. .these are the values of the society he grows up in.. Look who they just voted into government.. Then when it’s young men carry on that behaviour and struggle with it.. It attacks them..with venom.. James , kurtley and quade a merely a reflection of the society they live in.. One can see similar behaviour everyday..maybe the bloody baby boomers should be penalised for creating the mess in the first place.."

Our officials lack guts. The sooner we punt one of our "gen Y" troublemakers the better, only then will we have reasonable discipline and team culture will improve. These brats earning big money don't deserve to be treated leniently. Deans was vilified an was supposedly the reason we weren't winning well he's gone and the cattle remain and we still can't win. The whole setup needs a shake up. We must stop treating these prima donna's like movie stars and if they fail to toe the line, tear up a contract or two and there will be a change in the game.

Sorry, OJ, I just find the idea of you, of all people, casting aspersions on anyone's talent mildly amusing. And not at all compelling. Mind you, I don't know why you chose to bring up the issue of talent in the first place, but that was your choice.

What a lame retort that was. You sound like Sheek with one of his "David Lord has accomplished more than you could ever dream of" cries. You're not an apologist, you're a groupie.

Good point. Certainly a smack over the head (metaphorical or literal) is not a bad thing from time to time. Quite different to David's "tear up their contract, feed them to the wildebeestie" etc.

Well, having more talent in each of their little fingers than you do in your entire body, yes! Since you asked... :)

CHT, I wouldn't be so worried. The Roar has published at least 11 articles on this airport incident, in a desperate attempt to drum up some controversy. If you look over those articles, there are a healthy majority of contributors who are not in the least impressed with views like those of David Lord. Its actually a fairly small number of people who agree with him, but they seem greater in numbers due to an inordinate number of posts. In other words, there are actually plenty who agree with you, not just the three of us . In some ways we are just guilty of feeding those who should not be fed. But I do respond to them, because there are some useful lessons here for Australian rugby in general. The soft attitudes of those who think that O'Connor has actually done something controversial are not helpful to rugby in this country having a resurgence. Anyway, keep up the good work. The roar might actually have some news to report soon, or it might even print something of substance (gee, something about our forwards and how to improve their performance, do you think? Nah, better not - that might actually do something positive for Australian rugby!)

CHT, I am not sure that is correct, about Cattledog being able to address you, l mean. But give him time. He is better with shorter posts and simple words.

"What’s interesting to me is that JOC has obviously been on the outer with teammates for a while," What is your evidence for that?

"As I said on another post If Richie McCaw was O’Connor’s captain you can be sure none of this would have happened." Colvin, I suggest that you actually learn about player issues at the All Blacks, and how they handle them. Then you will understand why posts like Mick's are childish and hopelessly inaccurate.

Mick, your ridiculous post lacks all credibility, not to say substance. You clearly have no idea what other Wallabies are saying, and no idea how sponsorship works. Please spare us this nonsense. We know you don't like O'Connor, and we know you will say anything at all, regardless of accuracy, in order to sling off. It is also clear that you have no interest in the welfare of the Wallabies or Australian rugby in general. You've had some attention now, okay? Sit back and feel better about yourself.

Neither you nor David would know what fans want. The large number of Roarers on this and other threads alone is indicative of that, let alone what is out there in the real world. All you are doing is demonstrating that your narrow circle of friends hold identical beliefs to you. Surprise, surprise. In any case, what is its relevance? This thread is about David Lord's absurd assertion that a competent union would tear up O'Connor's contract because of this minor fracas.

Hey Mike. You now officially have a muppet called CHT. I see from his posts he has a good grasp of English, similar to many bogans I should think. You might like to get him to crawl back under his rock.

Steve, please don't use the head count bias to suggest you stand on the side of "common sense and consensus". We've had McCalman, Tomane and Beale come out in support for him and against that we have Higgers, Horwill and Sharpe. Sharpe is an ex-player and now in the media, even though he wasn't outed for dropping the ball in off the field, he certainly did it a lot on. I would suggest it is fairly even numbers.
