Jake White joins Super Rugby's Sharks

By News / Wire

Former Brumbies coach Jake White has been confirmed as the new director of rugby at South Africa’s Super Rugby rivals the Sharks.

The 50-year-old South African surprisingly quit the Brumbies less than two weeks ago with two years still left on his contract.

Just two months after leading the Canberra-based franchise to the Super Rugby final which they lost to the Chiefs, the Johannesburg-born White said he wanted to return to his homeland to be closer to his family.

White was also upset at missing out on the vacant Wallabies job in July, when Ewen McKenzie was appointed to replace Robbie Deans.

The former Springboks’ coach will reunite with his captain from the 2007 World Cup-winning campaign, John Smit, who is the Durban-based Sharks’ chief executive.

White takes over from former Springboks centre Brendan Venter, who was appointed in June this year following the axing of John Plumtree after a disappointing Super Rugby campaign.

“We are immensely happy to confirm the appointment of Jake White as our new director of rugby,” said Smit on the club’s website.

“We formed a formidable relationship during my playing career and I am delighted to re-establish that partnership, which is in line with our vision to take the Sharks to the next level.

“Jake is an experienced coach whose track record speaks volumes about his ability to rally his team and get the best out of them. We are pleased that he has decided to join the Sharks.”

In business I have dealt with exits like this before. The difference is that all of my dealings are not public. They relate to information staff and customers need to see. In every agreement I have seen, drafted or read the goal is to a) Keep the relationship as amicable as possible going forward (even when you hate the guy) b) Dealt with restraints and severances pragmatically c) BUT most important what is allowed to be said and what isnt allowed to be said is explicitly dealt with. If the Brumbies say something negative, then White yanks out dirty laundry and both parties lose. In such a situation a scripted exit letter that says almost nothing apart from thanking each other for the time together is wise. I would put money on the fact that everyone has something they would rather not come out. One party may well have something extra to hide. That is not much of a consultation when dirty laundry about oneself gets published as well. d) Think of it this way - If its inevitable that the person is going what is to be gained by over analysis? I appreciate you all want more info. I am curious and would love more as well. We aint going to get this

Actually restraints at more senior levels are quite enforceable. (depending) BUT I heard he was released from his contract and restraint. Of course we dont know exactly what the contract said ito of exit What I suspect happened was - Ask to be release and he would waive any money going forward... if the Brumbie released him from the Restraint of Trade - The Brumbies probably could have said - Get your backside back here or we will sue you for Breach - The Brumbies took a pragmatic approach - Why have an unwilling employee? And released him from contract and restraint. I hate contract situations like this. I am not defending White. My instinct is not to like it. I am mildly amused by the vitriol popping up wrt this. When Mickey Arthur got Schmidtcanned there was a lot of indignant posts on Roar about the cheek of him to claim compensation. The hazards of any foreigner taking on a job in a sportsteam

You could be right but in a small world we live in "lined up" neednt be a signed bit of paper. A chat over a beer "There's a home with the Sharks if you happen to come available" The ethical questions are valid and they need to be directed to Mr White

From what I read. (And I dont remember where I read it I gather he did have a non-compete clause but I heard they released him from it I heard this at the same time as the resignation announcement No idea about the detail or why they released him. As a business owner I hate these things. A contract is a contract. But who knows?

I don't think John Smit has handled this particularly well in the media. Contract or not, Brendan Venter looks like a bit of a Goose.

Yet another Brumby who was clearly not of Test standard, and if you want to actually check the specifics you might like to research the role of Laurie Fisher.

I post a question based on information reported in the press. You immediately assume I'm wrong. I clarify for you. Then you accuse me of dealing in conspiracy theories. Where you get that idea I have no idea, I can only assume that like most the ill-directed drivel I have to deal with on this site directed at me it is based on the fact that I support the Reds. If that isn't the case then sorry. Maybe if you dealt with facts instead of being rude you'd contribute something useful to the site.

In south Africa a restraint of trade is only enforceable if you pay the guy a sum of money. It is seen as "you cannot prevent a person from earning a living within the scope of his expertise and experience" So unless you pay him for the period you want to enforce a restraint of trade so that he does not need to work, you cannot enforce it.

Toomua and Kimlin were already Wallabies pre JW. Tomane was an Australian schoolboy star.

Can't help but feel the Sharks were lined up before JW's resignation from the Brumbies. With John Smit as Sharks CEO..

Amusing then? Its probably more likely to be someone like the Smith twins than say Mowen or Mogg, but you never know.

Its all water under the bridge now, but listening to Jake's comments at the Brumbies presentation dinner in August, I got the distinct impression that the backs were going to be unleashed more in the coming season.

Kimlin played for the Wallabies back in 2009 well before he played for the Brumbies under Jake White

Hmmmm Has Kimlin played for OZ ??? And why have you left MOGG OUT ??? IMO all the above guys are in OZ squad because of unavailability of the first choice players. They are good enough for S15 , playing the Brumbies style , BUT not that god for Interaional side.

RK - Your second question does lead one into believing you intended the first question to be rhetorical.

There you go mate with your conspiracy theories, or maybe its paranoia? if you can find anything with the word red in it on the above posts, that I posted, then I will buy you an ice cream:) twenty eighth, twenty ninth and thirtieth word, "that I posted" You will need to work harder for your ice cream pal, I am still scratching my head to work out why I would care what team you support, and why it would be important. Its obviously important to you though so good luck with it.
