Postecogclou's 'pass and pressure' game a coup for Socceroos

Even as a staunch Melbourne Heart fan, I’m really excited for Ange Postecoglou to get the Socceroos coaching job.

He’ll implement a system that won’t win us the World Cup – it mightn’t even win us a game in the pool stages – but will provide a base to work with for the Asian Cup and 2018 in Russia.

Hopefully, Lucas Neill gets the proverbial “Sorry mate, we don’t need you” – if he can’t start in the Japanese division, he’s not getting a game at the WC, end of story. We also need to stop aiming for that beanpole that Tim Cahill masquerades as.

Hopefully he moves away from the not archaic but just as boring 4-2-3-1 to a more attacking 4-3-3. Also, we sit deep enough in our own half to exist at a different altitude level to the opposing back line.

He’ll pick players than can play the pass and pressure game that he built at Brisbane and, akin to a seven-year-old with a low attention span tipping over a half-built Lego tower, developed at Melbourne Victory.

I do not buy into the argument he is ‘tactically inept’, for a few reasons – mainly because his Plan B is to do Plan A better, and when you’re playing a short passing game, that bloody well should be your Plan B.

It’s a system that works for Germany, Spain, Barcelona, and is now being used increasingly in Britain (at Swansea). It’s proven to work, and he has experience in achieving success with it.

I’m not going put my idea forward for a squad, all I want is Robbie Kruse be given the opportunity to do this.

Ball playing defenders, fast wingers and creative midfielders, once believed only to found in a Spanish backpackers group touring Australia, hasve been discovered and utilised in the A-League on numerous occasions.

I’m sick of Australia going into games where the best coach we have is the one sitting in the 18-yard box, so I hope Postecoglou does well.
