Sydney FC is back - player ratings vs Victory

By Joe Dimento / Roar Rookie

What a game by Sydney FC. The gameplay was some of the best we have seen all year and the atmosphere was electric. Be warned A-League – Sydney FC is back!

Let’s review the players.

Vedran Janjetovitic – Played ok but still lacking the confidence that made him the first choice over Ivan Necevski.

Had a couple of misjudged passes but still pulled some great saves. 7/10

Sebastian Ryall – Has really turned it around. Was last week booed for his performance but this week took ownership of the right back position, which will make it hard for Frank Farina to bench him.

Scored a great ‘opportunist’ goal. – 8/10

Tiago – Came to the rescue with some great tackles last night. Really is coming back into form and growing his partnership with Nikola.

Was a great leader in defence and distributed nicely to our midfielders – 8/10

Nikola Petkovic – Again another outstanding game. Partnered well with Tiago, Has really cemented the position at the back. – 8/10

Marc Warren – The writing has been on the wall for Warren and no more so than now.

Always hangs too far off his player, always gets caught the wrong side of the man and last night’s red card was just another example of his poor judgment. 1/10

Nicky Carle – Learning to play deeper on-field is tough for any natural attacker but Nicky is really adapting well.

Showed some of the skill that has made him a household name but produced some great defence. -9/10

Matt Thompson – The key to any team is the midfield. Call it the engine room.

Thompson was the key to this last night. Was everywhere and showed his experience where it mattered. – 8/10

Brett Emerton – Had a good game. Was finally playing in the position that made him famous and he produced some great runs and plays.

May be still suffering from his back issue but was again a great leader and link for the midfielders – 8/10

Ali Abbas – Work horse. Was everywhere. In midfield was electrifying and then was thrown in at left back and dominated that position.

Was again thrown into attack and linked well with everyone to create chances. 9/10 (man of the match)

Richard Garcia – I have watched every minute of every Sydney FC game this year and was generally not impressed with Garcia.

Last night he made a believer out of myself and the many other disgruntled fans at Allianz.

He showed some of the heart and skill he made his carer on abroad and finished the first goal with composure and class.

Worked hard all evening and link up great with ADP. – 8/10

Alessandro Del Piero – What can we say about the birthday boy? At 39 years young he still displays the skill and composure that made him the world’s best.

His passing was as accurate as ever and his leadership on the field was second to none. Scored the decisive penalty that ultimately won the game. – 9/10

Pedj Bojic – Came back after a couple of weeks and showed why he is one of the A-Leagues best.

Playing at left back, he produced what ended up being the tackle of the season in the dying seconds that showed his skill, timing and composure plus the hunger to win. Welcome back Pedj! – 8/10.

Chris Naumoff – We have a star in the talented 19-year-old.

Product of the Sutherland Sharks, he is tall, quick with skill in both feet. Hope he is absorbing everything he learns from playing with ADP.

Future star. 7/10.

And let’s not forget…

The Cove – Well done lads. I have had the pleasure of marching with you many times and last night’s experience was incredible.

You absolutely lifted the team and from where I was sitting near half way, could feel every word you guys sang.

Sydney is Sky Blue! 10/10

Get ya hand off it Tiago "Was a great leader in defence and distributed nicely to our midfielders – 8/10" please I've seen better defending in the local ballarat league. The muppet should of been off when Warren was given his marching orders. And am I the only one that thought Nicky Carle was average. I actually didn't see him do anything amazingly great. Nearly fell off the couch when he got in fox sports Alex Tobin votes

Well said Arto. I totally agree! But excitement builds confidence and for this I will not stop. If we just say "great game guys but your still in 7th, and this means nothing" to the players or "Great game lads, your passing, positioning and composure has improved, you are all starting to click. well done!" which do you think will build the most confidence? A confident team will always play better. A confident and united team are very hard to beat. Did you see what it ment to the players and staff on sat night after the win? It is a long way to go. But we have to start now. Come on Sydney!!

@ Joe Dimento: As an SFC supporter, I still feel you're getting ahead of yourself - we're still only 7th on the table with 2 wins from 5. Yes, we played well last week & also ok this week - but it's still a long way to go in the season and a loss next week and we're right back where we were before Sat night! I think you should take note of what Farina said after the match - that this win doesn't change anything and that they will still be under pressure next week too. It's important that the players back up the great effort & result from saturday with another one this weekend too.

That's your opinion, I reject it---except for the comment about Marc Warren---he was a bad recruit so was Fabio... Nothing to say about Pedj Bojic... ?

Tiago is slow, ball watches & a thug, him & Marc Warren is why SFC defence is so poor, how could a coach like Farina actually get worse players than they had before. Why get rid of Fabio for someone worse like Warren. Farina's recruiting was poor.

Thanks Qantas, I honestly think that if the sydney fc boys stick to the game plan from Frank and Rado, they should go far this season. The players are starting to respond to the pre season training and fitness work. Lets hope for the best... Sydney till i die..

Joe––I share your enthusiasm after watching SFC dispatch Melb V last Saturday. All credit to Frank Farina for the win. The most pleasing aspect for me was the way SFC have performed, not only last Saturday, but also the match against Perth––even though we were defeated in that fixture. The nuts and bolts are slowly being tighten and the players are starting to understand how playing from the back will strengthen their control over the opposition. The central defenders Tiago and Petkovic were good and will get better as the season progresses. Nicky Carle is starting to perform to expectations as the holding midfielder, (well done Nicky). Farina’s new acquisition the Serbian striker has all of the hallmarks to be an outstanding success. There is going to be some interesting and fruitful times ahead for the fans of SFC.

Franko, as gordon stated, it was an unrelated issue. Syd Fc supporters or even any A-League supporters are not like that. Cameron. You were missing berisha. Thats nice. Sydney Fc were missing 6 stsrters so well done on beating the syd reserves 4-0 Timmy. The fact that you did not score against 10 men with Archie and co is every reason to be excited. It was not always pretty but it was still the most entertaining game I have seen in Sky blues colors in a while. Midfielder. We all wish to get that crowd every week. The fact that our average is at 20k says alot. In tume it will grow but sydney is a hard market to crack Like I said. Sydney is Back.

Given the fact that if it weren't for some shambolic defence and very poor finishing by the victory that would most certainly have been another loss for the "resurgent" sky blues I wouldn't be popping the champagne corks just yet

Thank you for the warning. Just to let you in on a little secret, Roar weren't even at their best when we beat you 4-0. Not that Sydney are at their best but we'll see come round 27 :)

Reports suggest a group of Victory supporters were ambushed by some youths wearing hoodies and not wearing anything identifiable with SFC, as the Victory supporters were waiting to cross a busy intersection.

Joe, you got any news on the 'incident' at the bat and ball on Cleveland? Was that a NT vs Cove disturbance?
