Campbell Brown sacked by Gold Coast Suns

By The Roar / Editor

Gold Coast Suns veteran defender Campbell Brown has been sacked by the Gold Coast Suns after an incident in the United States that left teammate Steven May with a broken jaw.

Brown had been suspended by the club on Sunday after the team returned from their end-of-season trip in Los Angeles, on which an altercation between Brown and May occurred in a nightclub.

The club announced this afternoon that they would be parting ways with the former Premiership player following the conclusion of an investigation.

A former Suns vice captain, Brown also confirmed that he would be retiring from AFL football.

More to follow.

Sad ending. Very good player at his best. Not many all Australians and premiership players around. Actually a great bloke off field and was probably showing leadership in his own way. Comments above show that type of leadership is not valued by the public these days. Given the footage, back in the day he would be praised for putting the (I am guessing arrogant) little arse into line.

So if it had been a door bouncer who broke his jaw for being mouthy and obnoxious that would be ok and May should be punished?

Suns better off without him. Incredibly aggressive man.

Did see some footage of the inident, where Gibson of Hawks fame was holding off (coming between) May whose fists were meshing with Browns. Point was: a third party tried to break it up and yet May still got a broken jaw from a landed punch from the much shorter Brown. So Brown didn’t accept Gibson’s intercedence, and probably benefited from it. bilbo said | December 4th 2013 @ 4:21pm | Report comment Good point most likely Brown hit May after Gibson stepped in , Gibson's interference led indirectly to May's injury. In other words Beown wasn't acting in self dense and his act was intentional and premeditated . That was what most likely got him sacked along with the seriousness of May's injury.

From what I can gather, may tried to get back into the nightclub and brown and Gibson stopped may - before he got into trouble. May then shaped up for a fight, and brown duly punched him. May would seem more deserving of sanction than brown.

It's about choices. Gary Ablett Senior - a really bad guy off the field but his son is stellar. Campbell is emulating his old man.

Browny obviously another who can't control himself on the drink. Obviously not worried about the fact he is a senior player on a one year (likely to be his last) contract in the AFL with no chance of being picked up by any other club. Luckily for the Suns they are on the ascendancy in their AFL journey and the one guy that has embarrassed the club twice in the off-season (think Thailand naked photos in 2011 with Maverick Weller) in 3 years is now gone from the club. Gary Ablett Jr as the senior player and club gun is who all the young guys will continue to follow and chase, Brown will be a distant memory when the Tigers visit Metricon Stadium in Round 1 2014.

Sad way for things to end, but its hard enough for youngins to get started, without getting belted by a senior player, who's idea of a training drill happend outside a LA nightclub at 2am. Did see some footage of the inident, where Gibson of Hawks fame was holding off (coming between) May whose fists were meshing with Browns. Point was: a third party tried to break it up and yet May still got a broken jaw from a landed punch from the much shorter Brown. So Brown didn't accept Gibson's intercedence, and probably benefited from it. Still, Brown and nightclubs have form, but sadly May will not play for a while.
