Which NRL sides would you move, merge and murder?

By matt dunbar / Roar Rookie

This is purely hypothetical. It is not meant to offend, it is meant to provoke discussion and personally lead to a great after work drinks discussion at the pub.

After a painful night of watching girly TV with the wife, a question came to me and after asking a few mates (with hilarious explanations) I put it to you.

Gun to your head, which clubs would you move, merge and kill off.

And why?

Personally, I would move the Wests Tigers, merge the Bulldogs and Parramatta and kill off the Roosters.

I’d move Wests full time to Campbelltown, just because I’m an old Western Suburbs Magpies fan. Pretty simple, right? Get them playing in black and white again.

Next I’d merge Canterbury and Parramatta, to make a massive western Sydney super club.

With Wests now full time in the south west, the inner west all the way to Parramatta is now theirs alone.

And kill the Roosters, because I don’t think they bring much to the NRL.

They have no juniors and a habit of buying players from other clubs. Other than that, I generally I just don’t like them.

Some of my mates answers were just as deep, from killing off Manly because no one likes Manly to moving the Storm to Brisbane because they’re pretty much a Queensland team anyway.

So what do you think? Gun to your head, you have to choose which NRL sides to move, merge and murder.

Who would you pick?

I would move Canterbury to Christchurch New Zealand, they would still be Canterbury Bulldogs, but now be a New Zealand team. I would murder Brisbane Bronco and put 3 new clubs there. Being Logan, Ipswich and Redcliff. I would relocate Cronulla to Adelaide. I would bring in a Perth team. I would also un merge Saints and Illawarra with Saints getting all of our territory and juniors back when Cronulla relocate to Adelaide. Wests would play the majority of their games at Campbeltown, with a few at the Homebush or the Football Stadium.

Yep. Keep the coastal bogans in one spot, so the rest of us can keep a close eye on 'em....

Aren't they already there?

Yes, just kill them off. With the proceeds from the resulting chook raffle and barbecue, we could finance the revival of Annandale and help them to finally achieve a winning rate of 19%. It just takes vision.

Missing the point seems to be a habit here... Apart from pleading for my life, with a gun to my head, here's what I'd do: Kick out Parramatta. The Eels have the unique distinction of being the perhaps the most pathetically run club ever who happened to have the perhaps the greatest ever team in 1982. Bring back Glebe. With Frank Burge, they were the greatest one-man show in history. If we can clone his DNA and bring him back too, we can reignite the inner-city rivalry with Sydney University. Merge Manly with Cronulla. If you think about it, it makes sense.

And then Ed, quietly move the Broncos via panel van to BOGANville.

No teams should merge, relocate,be banished to the history books. If a code cannot learn the unintentional consequences of the super league war, then they are living in dreamland. If the by product of moving flags on a map,is to lose support in one area, for the securing of others in another area,to give opposing codes a leg up,to alienate the junior base within the affected area, ensure disaffected fans will either be permanently lost to the code,go to another code(eg Bears),and whiteant the very foundations of the code then my friends the very notion of such a decision,,is economic absurdity. The ARL had $20m plus in the bank in 1994,when SL came into being end 1996 they had zilch, zero, nada, nil, blotto. There area a couple of teams that I have a personal distaste,(no names no packdrill),but I would not want to see them move, for the fans' sake.Learn the mistakes of history.

How dare you say "kill off the Roosters." On what detailed and unbiased research are you basing a comment like that? The only stand-alone foundation club to play every season from the birth of Rugby League? A club that has the third highest number of premierships and has held more national and state reps than any other club? A club that has brought so much not only to the development of Sydney RL put is internationally recognised in most countries where people have heard of the game. Just kill them off?

Good ideas generally, but I'd leave penrith alone - it's so far away from everything else - but make the bulldogs represent basically all the territories of parramatta and balmain and rename them the 'Central Sydney Bulldogs'. Then you shift the tigers to the central coast and the eels to Adelaide. Then you bring back Wests Magpies, but put them closer in than Campbeltown, as it's too far and underpopulated.

Bring Back the Bears

If in 1999 the Bears weren't already building a stadium in the Central Coast and had to merge I think a Tigers and Bears merger could have worked ok (at least a lot better than Northern Eagles). Split games out of leichhardt and NS and use Allianz as their neutral stadium (easily accessible for both supporter bases). Unfortunately due to the slightly generic location name of Norths the Bear would most likely lose out that situation but Norths Tigers with red and black hoops could have worked. Considering the catchment area of Balmain covers areas like Ryde and Eastwood, they are actually very similar geographically.

I think for a perfect NRL entity, 4 Queensland Teams, 7 NSW teams, 2 New Zealand teams, 1 Western Australian team, 1 Victorian team and 1 ACT team. QLD North Queensland Cowboys Central Queensland Brisbane Broncos Gold Coast Titans NSW Newcastle Knights Manly Sea Eagles Sydney Roosters South Sydney Rabbitohs Parramatta x Penrith x Wests = Greater Western Panthers etc. St George Illwarra x Cronulla Sharks = Southern Dragons etc. Bulldogs x Balmain = Western Sydney Bulldogs etc NZ Auckland Vulcans Wellington Warriors ACT Canberra Raiders WA Perth Panthers VIC Melbourne Storm

Melbourne, bris, gold coast, newc, canb, 2 x NZ plus four from Sydney 24 rounds, with thirteen teams allows byes. Kill off Origin build up a Champions league NRL vs Superleague.

Move the tigers to the central coast that way I don't have to drive to Sydney from newcastle to watch them play!!!! And you would also have a natural rivalry with the knights.

Geographically. Merger between Penrith and wests makes as much sense as between wests and balmain. I think a demerger should be considered there, and perhaps shifting the balmain territory to Souths. I reckon a lot of people in balmain would be happy to follow Souths.
