Cricket Australia apologise after posting offensive Monty Panesar tweet

By The Roar / Editor

Cricket Australia have been forced to apologise after tweeting an image of four men supposedly impersonating English spinner Monty Panesar this morning.

Australian cricket’s governing body posted a photo via their official Twitter account – originally from Instagram – with an accompanying caption “Will the real Monty Panesar please stand up?! #Ashes”.

The image was of four bearded Sikh men dressed as Teletubbies, matched with turbans and coloured sunglasses.

Well-known English CNN presenter Piers Morgan was among those to condemn the tweet.

Following criticism Cricket Australia swiftly took the offending tweet down during the morning session of the first day of the second Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval.

The gaffe came just days after ABC announcer David Nixon was stood down as a result of comments he made in England’s loss to the Chairman’s XI in Alice Springs.

Nixon was disciplined for pronouncing Panesar’s name in an Indian accent while introducing the spinner over the ground’s PA, and allegation he has since denied.

I found it really insensitive if not racist. It is not just what Monty feels about. This is more what cricket australia think of the sikhs in their country. There is a fair amount of sikh population in Australia. With the way cricket is dwindling in their country, i wouldn't alienate a communitiy. Would something like this come out of an yankee sports body. Aussies are not yet racially mature as the most of the world.

Another point, channel nine does a look a like bit in the cricket show, they compared Bell to the sherminator and Joe Root to Ellen DeGeneres, funny stuff, but because they're caucasion no one worries. Anyone that's up in arms over this needs to take a look at themselves.

Why doesn't someone ask Monty what he thinks, bet you it wouldn't bother him at all. I guess its only red heads who are allowed to have the p taken out of them?? So many people taking themselves to seriously and projecting that on to others, pull your heads in before were all to scared to say anything will you?

Very funny, as you probably know that tweet could have come from anywhere. I feel sorry for people that have a chip on their shoulder about Australians. A lot of envy in the world.

I feel a little for the Australians on this one. It can't be easy for some of the more backwards elements of the colonies to find themselves suddenly judged by the standards of London and New York when the British press come to town. Let's hope the shock of finding themselves 25 years behind contemporary social moeurs in the rest of the Western world encourages Australians to up their game.

Michel, Where has it been stated that you can't use the word black anymore & what relevance does it have to the moronic tweeting of the offending image? It is not political correctness gone mad either. Yes, Piers Morgan is an objectionable twat who has been responsible for sanctioning equally racist headline but he is right in demanding a sacking. Someone should be fired. The only one who comes out of this with dignity is Panesar himself. It's days like these that make me ashamed to be an Aussie.

Is this a joke? Apparently you can't mention the word 'black' anymore. This reminds me of the whole Radike Samo incident...

How weak is the reaction from the boy from The Daily Mail , an expensive brand of English toilet paper. Gets a free ticket here to behave like a ripe cad. Jolly bad form old chap. Look out for the soap.

I've pointed it out in another thread but I might aswell do it here too. They weren't dressed up as Monty Panesar. They were dressed as teletubbies but happen to be Sikh. What Cricket Australia did was akin to going to a golf course and calling every black golfer Tiger Woods.

This is part of the English media’s campaign since the first test to try and take down Australia’s momentum.. No one would have cared about the photo, certainly no one in the Aussie media cared or fans for that matter. Fans have been dressing up as their favourite players for years, so whats the big deal? does the player have to be white only for fans to dress up as them? Reminds me of the Harry Connick Jr incident which again was a storm in a teacup where Harry was trying to drum up controversy to get attention and sell tickets for his ignored concert tour.
