Izzy to be No.1 dual international: Sailor

By Darren Walton / Wire

Former Kangaroo and Wallaby Wendell Sailor is tipping Israel Folau will wind up as the greatest dual international of the professional era.

In Sailor’s opinion, English 2003 Rugby World Cup winger Jason Robinson and Sydney Roosters juggernaut Sonny Bill Williams, who hoisted the Webb Ellis Cup with the All Blacks in 2011, presently share the mantle.

But after watching Folau equal Lote Tuqiri’s all-time record for most Wallabies tries in a calendar year during a spectacular 15-Test debut season, Sailor thinks the 24-year-old will have Robinson and SBW covered by the end of his career.

Tuqiri, Sailor and fellow rugby league convert Mat Rogers played a total of 149 Tests and amassed 57 tries, but Sailor says Folau has already eclipsed all three as Australia’s premier dual international.

“I think Israel, he’s mixed a bit of everything,” Sailor told AAP.

“He’s taken what Lote’s done, what I’ve done, Mat Rogers … and Israel even though he’s a by-product of that, I just think Israel’s taken it to a new level now.

“Jason Robinson, Sonny Bill has been good, but I think he can nearly be better than all of those guys.

“He’s only 24 or 25 or something. He can probably go to a whole new level.”

Folau remains the youngest player, at 18, to represent Australia in a rugby league Test and scored on debut for both the Kangaroos and the Wallabies, collecting a memorable double against the touring British and Irish Lions in Melbourne this year.

Sailor attributes the code-hopper’s tough two-year stint in the AFL with Greater Western Sydney for his rapid rise in rugby.

“Just his confidence, I think going to AFL has helped him because from league he was at the heights of his stuff and then when you go to AFL you have to learn new stuff,” he said.

“And he was in reserve grade a bit and getting ripped into a bit about not being that good at that level.

“I think it just shows that hunger.

“His switch (to rugby) was amazing. They were playing against the British lions – that can’t be easy to do, but he was our best player and was nearly the best player through the series.

“I’d like to see him come back to league at some stage, but (after) a few more years in rugby and I’m happy he’s going well because I know he got kicked a bit when he went to AFL and he showed what a class act he is.”

@lassisitude. I took the time to explain your comment regarding rainfall, the reason he was a loose forward early ( meaning as a professional player he never was). And you say irrelevant backed up with I saw some of his games. So you know nothing except what you read and make up and consider that relevant. I also questioned what made Aussie smart and how they worked him out 5 years later. It would appear that your comments lack substance and don't stand up to close inspection. So if you want to make statements at least stand by them. The reasons you put up are nonsense and your comment regarding Australia are also rubbish. With Jonah a bit slower he was being used to make yards a bit like Digby, just far superior. It is a 15 man game if you take the time to observe. Anyway with regards to a career and player who redefined wing play for players over 115kg.. I was hoping for something a little more salient from you. But I guess if you saw a few games when he played the Wallabies from the confines of a lounge room, well that makes an expert here :-).

Can't judge a player solely on his teams results vs another country otherwise mention of someone like BOD as a world best would be a joke if judging by his 17 or so matches vs the ABs- all losses. Although Lomu never scored vs SA his sides still won 7 from 12 meaning he must have had a positive impact elsewhere. And in the 95 final its well known that the number one priority was to stop Lomu- stop Lomu and win the game. In my history of watching the game I have heard no bigger accolade than that from an opposition side. Ball in hand there has been no better in the history of the game.

Odd since my original comments were in direct response to your silly assertions before you changed the comparison to debut season. My comments about folau being unproven relate to his being poor defensively which he is. This will be tested more next season by both NZ and an increasingly attacking South Africa out wide. But hey...enjoy the apples.

whatever that means...My pick is that Folau crashes and burns in the next two years in rugby and goes back to league. He's one of these game jumpers like SBW except not in the same class. SBW moves when hes at the top of the game he left- not because he can't hack it there. Defensively Folau will be targeted next year- just doesn't have the same energy on defence so it makes him a risk at Fullback and our wingers are good enough to contain him out wide. So the question is where does he go vs the AB's? Wing or FB?

Lomus debut was at 19 and wasnt a seasoned International rugby league star. If you think Folaus second year will be better than Lomus second in 95, by which time he was already suffering from his serious kidney disease, then you are dreaming.

Absolutely ridiculous. You compare Folau's debut season to Lomu's debut season.

Agree completely...wasnt a great in either game as far as I'm concerned. Never see his name on the Union best wingers list and can't recall a single moment or try versus the AB's. Pretty sure Lomu is a regular on anyones list. And if you had first choice of all the best wingers of all time to select for your must win side I'd say most would pick Lomu first because the prospect of giving him up to the opposite team is unthinkable. No other player fits that category.

Lomu terrible hands? Care to share?Jeff Wilson had slowed down that day because he was the one puking the most at the start of the game, at least 5 others who should not have taken the field that day...conveniently overlooked here. Lomu has still scored more World cup tries than anyone single player in history so besides terrible hands and being used wrong he sure seemed to do more than anyone else in the game on the planet during his time. Brains Trust I think the donations need topping up...Sailor and Folau have nothing on Lomu...dont recall either being pursued by Nike nor rampaging through and around defences as Lomu did...not even close.

Yes Brainstrust, Wendell's stats would make for some interesting reading for those that want to write him off. Nearly always broke the gain line, and always stole extra metres with ball in hand. He had limitations of course (kicking and defensive flexibility) but in attack he was very strong in contact. I'll never forget against Samoa there was a very large 130kg prop who had Wendell to tackle one on one. Wendell sat him on his bum with a 100% committed bump then went on his merry way. Wendell was not perfect, obviously limited, but 100% committed (party biscuits aside), and uniquely gifted within his narrower skill set. If not for his silly party choice, which derailed the Tahs finals prep that year, Tah history may have been different. I loved watching him play.

I think Folau lacks something up top doesn't read the play in defence that well , and you would have expected AFL to have improved his kicking more. Tends to be hyped by the media maybe because he is considered some form of markering coup. Lomu had terrible hands, reason NZ lost the world cup final, I also thought NZ threw away another world cup because of him in combination with Jeff Wilson as fullback who had slowed down by then being exploited by France. They should have put the faster Chris CUllen there. I also thought the Kiwis ended up using him in the wrong way for years. They made him come infield where the forwards were coming across , and then used to use him as decoy when they played it wide. All they needed was to let him stand wide and give him the ball. Robinson I though not only was he very good but England lacked that quality in the outside backs so without him they would not have gotten near winning the world cup, Tuqiri and Rogers were also very good, helped carry the Wallabies. Wendell Sailor to me though he could have been invaluable if he was used in the right way infield , on the wing he was a bit of a liability in defence and with the opposition kicking, the thing about him was his running style and upper body strength meant he was great at making ground, never turned the ball over and was staying upright then recycling the ball quickly. He ability to stay upright also meant a team could form a maul very easily with him. If you remember the South African coach made the comment they missed alll their tackles on one player which was Wendell Sailor.

I really detest it when people come out and say stupid things like that......he hasn't even proved himself yet, when he starts scoring a hat trick of tries CONSISTENTLY against the All Blacks and the Sth Africans, oh and don't forget England, then come back and parlez-vous. Wendell Sailor, when did he become an authority on union?

that is clearly wrong. Tuqiri would on the wing. Rogers played 10, 15 and wing. Folau and Cooper are better. That leaves 1 wing spot. At his best I would play Rogers there. That means no place for Sailor.

Wendell, Tuqiri and Rogers would walk into the current Wallaby team easily if they were at the right age

Wake up Storm Boy...Wendel's "tipping Israel Folau to wind up as the greatest dual international of the professional era"....was merely him suggesting Folau may be remembered as being the greatest code crosser ever...NOT that he is NOW!!!!!! How could you possibly compare Israel's achievements with PAST Union convert Jason Robinson. Give him time mate...if he commits to Union long term, Folau could possibly wind up as the greatest dual international of the professional era...just sayin!!!!!!
