Australian ODI squad announced: Warner back in, with Pattinson, Clarke and Marsh

By The Roar / Editor

Test opener David Warner has rewarded for his outstanding form with a recall to the Australian one-day cricket squad.

Omitted from the one-day series that followed this year’s Ashes tour in England and also the subsequent ODI tour to India in October, Warner was included in a 14-man squad named on Tuesday for the first three matches of the five-match ODI series against England in January.

It follows his brilliant form for NSW in the domestic one-day competition and also in the victorious Ashes series which Australia leads 4-0 going into the final Test at the SCG from Friday.

Fast bowler James Pattinson, returning from injury, is also included in the ODI squad and should form a lethal combination with Mitchell Johnson.

Pattinson made a successful return with the Melbourne Renegades in their Twenty20 Big Bash win over Brisbane Heat on Monday night, taking 3-36 off his four overs.

Skipper Michael Clarke and Shaun Marsh are also back after missing the India tour with injury.

Warner comes in the expense of Phil Hughes while Adam Voges, Moises Henriques and Callum Ferguson have lost their places from the India one-day squad.

“David Warner has won back his place in the Australia ODI squad with his outstanding recent form, not least in the domestic Ryobi One-Day Cup competition that was held in September and October in Sydney,” said national selector John Inverarity.

“We believe this is a well-balanced squad that can build on the promising form displayed in our most recent limited overs series against England and India.”

The first one-day match is Jan 12 at the MCG.

ODI squad: Michael Clarke (c), George Bailey (vc), Nathan Coulter-Nile, Xavier Doherty, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, James Pattinson, David Warner, Shane Watson.

My side for the ODI coming up would be as follows: Warner,Watson,Marsh,Lynn,Bailey,White,Wade,Cutting,Pattinson,Johnson,O keefe. I would give Clarke a rest,we will need him fully fit for the SA tour I am giving Lynn a go as his form in the Ryobi cup and T20 games this past year has been great .

One dropped catch doesn't make a poor fielder mate. How many fast bowlers do you see fielding in the covers for their teams?? I can only recall NCN. I'm a massive Cutting fan, but deep down I know he will probably not play for Aus again. His only chance would be if Siddle was injured, but even then I reckon they'd go Bird as first change. But there is no way that Cutting is better than NCN in the field, no way at all. NCN is also faster than Cutting, even faster than his "fast bouncer" that you referred to.

Hughes is a far more promising player than Marsh and his brilliant start to his ODI career last year should have seen him selected. If any other player scored two ODI hundreds in a calendar year they would be firmly entrenched in the side yet Marsh's surname prevails again. Also, what were the selectors thinking when they called up Ferguson to India? They called him up, didn't select him meaning he consequently missed most of the Ryobi Cup as well and now is not considered good enough - based on what??? Mixed messages for both him and Voges, extremely unlucky.

The continued selection of Finch is a complete farce as his ODI record is awful (he averages 22 if you disregard his innings against a glorified club side) as are his fc returns (so it cannot be justified on the basis of providing a promising player with international exposure) Can only assume that he has compromising photos of the selectors in his possession as there can be literally no other justification for his selection

Wade averages only in the 20s in ODIs which is similar to Paine. Maxwell's bowling, which wasn't much chop, has dropped off. And yes Faulkner could come in at the expense of Mckay. Doherty averages over 30 and doesn't take many wickets. He is just a container. Surely There are better spinners. Lyon or O'Keefe could definitely do better.

You'd love to think so. At the moment though Doherty is the best in Australia in my opinion

Obviously you didn't see NCN in MCG test filling in on the boundary. Dropped catch and hesitating to come in and attack the ball many times. I doubt he is close to Cutting as a fielder. I only say NCN has not much pace relatively speaking as the powers that be and commentators keep spouting off about his pace. I agree he is similar to McKay and Cutting, but Cutting has that surprise bouncer which is 5ks or so faster than his standard deliveries.

Watson is arguably the no.1 ODI player in the world. You've got to pick him if he's available.

Biggest issue is an ordinary spinner batting at 11. Can't Agar be turned into a strong ODI spinner?

Good side. I wouldn't play Clarke or Watson - because of their injury potential.... Same w Haddin. Warner Finch SMarsh Bailey Wade Smith Faulkner/Maxwell Johnson Pattinson McKay Lyon Starc would be likely to come in if available.

I'll finish that, between finch and Marsh. Marsh Warner Watson Clarke Bailey Maxwell Haddin Faulkner Johnson McKay Doherty That's as good a one day team in the world

I think Marsh is a better one day player than Finch. I think for the last batting spot it will be between

Definitely hasn't been awful Ronan. There has been a number of times in the past year when the opposition have got off to a flyer and he has been brought on after the early power play and slowed things right down. Often bowls in the power play so thats how Clarke and Bailey rate him. I love Lyon but Doherty is a lot better one day bowler

You say NCN has "not much pace" then say Cutting & McKay should be there. They are both slower than NCN, and both are nowhere near as good as him in the field, with only Cutting being able to challenge him with his batting. Odd choice...

Because he HASNT done a great job! He's played a few good games for Aus, but not for a long time, mate. I'd much prefer to see someone who actually challenges the batsmen with spin & flight, not just darts into middle stump.
