Sydney Sixers vs Perth Scorchers: Big Bash League live scores, blog

By Suneer Chowdhary / Roar Guru

It’s the fight for the second spot in the Big Bash League as the Perth Scorchers travel to the SCG to take on the Sydney Sixers in the 20th game of the competition and you can follow the scores live from 7.40pm AEDT.

It’s coming to that stage of the tournament, where teams would be giving more than a glance at the points table before every game.

Barring the Melbourne Stars, who have all but cemented their place in the last-four stage of the competition, the fight for the remaining three slots in the knock-out round is alive and kicking.

The Sixers and the Scorchers have a decent shot at making it to that stage.

Both teams are currently on six points, with the Scorchers having a better net run-rate while the Sixers have a game in hand.

More vitally, all but one team behind them on the table have a decent chance of leap-frogging them by the time the league stage is completed, making this a game of much importance.

The Sixers have won all but one of their games, with their sole loss being an acceptable one to the Stars, given the team from Melbourne has gone about crushing every other side.

On the other hand, the Scorchers won only one of their first three matches but since then have notched up two victories in a row, thanks mainly to their strong bowling attack.

Their last match was an interesting one. The Scorchers seemed to have run themselves out of contention with four run-outs in their innings against the Hurricanes but Nathan Coulter-Nile and Yasir Arafat shared five wickets between them, conceded only 42 runs and ran home winners.

Unfortunately for the Scorchers, they will be without two of their key players for this one, Coulter-Nile and Shaun Marsh, both lost to national duties.

If Alfonso Thomas is fit enough, and one would like to believe he is after being named in the 13, he will take up Coulter-Nile’s place in the 11. Either Hilton Cartwright or Ryan Duffield may replace Marsh.

What makes things worse for the Scorchers is while they have had to consolidate their resources after losing a couple to the Australian ODI squad, the Sixers have been propped up by a few returns.

Steven Smith returns to take over the captaincy of the side, while there is place in the squad for Nathan Lyon as well, although it remains to be seen whether he will get the nod over Steve O’Keefe.

The other option is to play them both in the line-up, which may not be such a left-field idea given how economically the slow bowlers have bowled this season.

And while Ravi Bopara will be lost to the English ODI squad taking on Australia in the first of five ODIs on Sunday, another Englishman, Chris Tremlett joins the 13-man squad.

The Scorchers have often been an under-rated team in the competition and surprised a couple of their opponents with their strong bowling.

However, with the loss of Coulter-Nile and Marsh stretching their resources, this seems to be a test of their depth they may find difficult to fill.

Is Henriques the first player to get a pair in a T20 match?

That's it from me then, an excellent match following the dampener last night. Tomorrow, we have two games, and I will be calling them live as well, so hope to see everyone around for them! Bye for now though!

They were all in the circle! Fair enough, but would've made a great photo.

That's the fourth win in the competition for the Scorchers in six games, which makes it eight points and a clear second spot in the points table. The Sixers are not too far behind on six, but they have also played five, which means they need to win two in the next three to ensure qualification.

...and that's that, first ball, fullish ball on his pads and easily tucked away through mid-wicket for a four! That's one of the most anti-climatic Super Overs I have seen in my life! Perth Scorchers have won by a teeny, weeny whisker!

Expectedly, the field's quite closed-in. Brett Lee will take the ball and on strike will be Adam Voges.

Interestingly, Henriques has won his NSW Blues a Super Over before this, in the Champions League. It was against the Trinidad and Tobago and he had first smashed 16 off the last over of the innings to tie the game before hitting four fours in the Super Over! Unfortunately, it was far worse than that for the Sixers. The Sixers are taking a lot of time to choose the ball. The Scorchers need to score 2 to win, 1 will tie it, and the Sixers will win it in that case because they have hit more boundaries!

First it was Daniel Smith and now it's Steven, the two who need to take the blame here. Played very poor strokes at different points in the game. Perth need two to win from six balls here.

Beaten! Slower one, hits the edge and misses the stump by a whisker! Almost shaved the stump... ...through to the keeper. But off the fourth ball, Henriques has smashed it to the point fielder, gone, caught, bowled out for 1! The Sixers have been bowled out for...gulp...one!

Slower full-toss second ball to Maddinson who waits on it and drives it to the deep cover region for a single. 1/1 in 0.2

So the Sixers are going out with Moises Henriques and with Arafat to bowl to Smith... ...and wow, Smith's gone, bowled! First ball! Poor shot first ball from the captain. He was looking to ramp it over fine-leg, but he seemed to have moved quickly towards the off side, then had to wait for it to come to him and mistimes the ramp. Beaten and bowled. 1/0 in 0.1

I have always felt a point shared is a good result.

So the last Super Over I saw was in the World T20 last year in Sri Lanka. West Indies and New Zealand were involved in a low-scoring thriller before the Windies came through in the Super Over. Interestingly, in the same tournament, New Zealand were earlier involved in another Super Over against Sri Lanka and they had lost then too, so that was two defeats in two games in the Super Eight stage for the Kiwis via the Super Over rule!

Ok then do you think a draw is a fair result or should we have the super over?
