The big question mark over Tomic's ticker

By David Lord / Expert

A dozen years ago I reported on ABC NewsRadio I had seen a long television clip of a nine-year-old tennis player by the name of Bernard Tomic.

He wasn’t much taller than the net, but this kid had everything: hand-eye co-ordination, footwork, and incredible timing.

“If Bernard ever gets taller than the net, he’s going to be really something,” I said at the time.

What I didn’t say was that he was a brat. How can you call a nine-year-old a brat?

No matter, I thought, his father and coach John Tomic will take him aside and iron out the problem. Little did I know Dad was volcanic, and likely to fly off the handle at the click of a finger.

So what chance did Bernard have? None and Buckleys.

Since then both father and son have hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. John has been banned from all Slams for headbutting Bernard’s former hitting partner Thomas Drouet, while Bernard’s only plus-feature has been to grow from a pocket rocket to 195cm.

He now has the power and the wingspan to be a force on the tour, but the question marks are what’s between his ears and in his chest.

He once boasted that he will be the world number one, and win every Slam.

He predicted that he was going to serve like Goran Ivanesevic, have the mind of Peter Sampras, the groundstrokes of Roger Federer, and the fighting heart of Lleyton Hewitt.

In his dreams.

He’s always “going to” do this and “going to” do that, when in actual fact, it ain’t “going to” happen.

Last night at the Australian Open, Bernard Tomic did himself in good and properly.

The one-set capitulation to Rafael Nadal was an embarrassment to watch, and the packed Rod Laver Arena rightfully jeered the 21-year-old as he walked off the court.

If the groin injury allegedly sustained on Monday was serious enough, Tomic should have withdrawn from the tournament. If he tried to emotionally blackmail the packed house by being a martyr, he won’t be forgiven in a hurry.

The 41-minute 6-4 set lasted 54 points. Tomic went through the grimaces for the last 51 of those points, whether he won or lost them.

It reminded me of the 2012 US Open clash with Andy Roddick, when American legend John McEnroe accused Tomic of “tanking” in the 6-3 6-4 6-0 loss.

In the world of international tennis, tanking is the worst accusation that can be made.

Bernard Tomic’s future? Cloudy.

Look at these players: Milos Raonic (7th) Kei Nishikori (8th)- US Open runner up 2014 Grigor Dimitrov (9th) Ernests Gulbis (13th) These were the players earmarked as upcoming players to watch along with Bernard Tomic. Bernard Tomic (63rd). What does this tell you? All the other players are top 10 or around top 10 and this has been the case for some time. And you wonder why Tomic is nowhere near their rankings- the other players don't tank matches, they are dedicated to tennis (even Gulbis is starting to get his act together), they don't party at strip clubs, they put in the hours that is needed to play at this level and they are not a dickhead like Tomic. And their reward are relatively consistent results and among the world's best players

I agree. This is another fine example of xenophobia in Australia's sporting arena. It is difficult to prove, and I believe that some of the perpetrators don't even realise that their accusations have been shaped by Australia fear of those who are not really a "try blue."

I agree 100% with your comment Chris. What do the public expect him to do?? Play through pain and make the injury worse?? Groin injuries can b e devastating as they can take much longer to heal due to the limited blood supply to the area. In fact, groin injuries are often the cause of ending careers for older players.

Yes ....Boris Becker Wimbledon champ 17years, 227 days (a record later broken by Michael Chang in 1989, who won the French Open when he was 17 years, 110 days). Tomic is past it

Ok poor Tomic. Give the kid a break. It's all his dad and rogue media reports misinterpreting the facts. Either way you are swimming against the tide of opinion on this Chris. So Tomic picked up the groin injury in the 4th did he? My information said he had it before he went in same as Nadal did when he played. My point is Nadal played harder and for longer. Nadal is a much more physical player and puts a lot more pressure on these kinds of injury. I didn't say it didn't hurt, so does a sprained thumb etc. The point is Tomic seems to lack intestinal fortitude sometimes and this situation isn't a cause for that opinion to change. Finally comments from Federer, Del Potro etc about his maturity and dedication are now being excused as Tomic working out what he wants to do. Well when he does can you kindly inform the public. because nobody else seems to aware of it. Mentally, he appears weak. If that is his dad's fault, too bad, it still is what he is. And all the excuses and posts in the world won't change the opinion of many who feel that way. Good for you for persevering and seeing only a young confused kid doing his best. When he grows up and actually puts an effort in, public opinion will no doubt change. By then I wonder what ranking he will be and if anybody cares. He has done nothing to impress on the ATP and lacks the consistency to be a top ten player, let alone threaten the very top. My view is he may break the top ten in a couple of years and then fade. But for now he is not worth the excitement.

Robbo, none of us here are professional sports people training at an elite level. It's like asking Tomic to do my day job, where I am a professional. Fact is he couldn't. So that argument can be taken out with the trash. He's such a great talent, every Australians knows it. We also know that he's got no heart, soul or cojones to reach his potential and that's what annoys us. We Aussies love a fighter, always have and always will. Lastly, if he was performing on the court, his off court behavior would be surely scandalous, but no-one would hold it against him like they do now. Don't hold your breath waiting for him to win a grand slam in the future btw.

There's a question mark? Surely there isn't anyone who actually still thinks he has any, is there?

Brendon the 1st, care to elaborate on your medical knowledge to back up the opinion, he clearly could have played on?

He needs to collect his check = $30K. If you fight Mayweather in the boxing ring. Winner and loser will get 40mil and 5 mil respectively. You know that you will lose before the fight, then it is best to fake the injury to deceive the public. You will still receive $5mil and you can tell people I can punch Mayweather like a pig head if...and only...if I am not injured. In this case, I can beat Nadal if and only if I am not injured. Come one Tomic the kid.
