Is the Australian cricket team ready to be number one again?

By Patrick / Roar Rookie

It has been a while since Australia could justifiably claim to be the best Test cricket team in the world. Some may point to the series they won in South Africa in 2009 as the point at which they were last no 1.

Others will point to the 2007/2008 series against India, where the foreign cricket commentariat, (Peter Roebuck and Tony Greig) and large swathes of ‘would be if they could be’ domestic supporters stabbed the triumphant winning spirit of the Australian Test team in the back.

This winning spirit did not come easily.

It was forged from the depths of 1985, the hangover of World Series Cricket and rebel tours to South Africa.

It took over a decade to temper until coming to fruition in the partnership of the Waugh twins in the deciding Test of the 1995 series against the West Indies.

It was personified in characters like Steve Waugh and Justin Langer, neither of whom were the most talented batsmen, but inspired their teammates by their ruthless desire to reach their potential. Or the near autistic accuracy of Glenn McGrath.

It was graced by the skills of great batsmen like Mark Waugh, Adam Gilchrist, Matt Hayden and Ricky Ponting. The silky smooth keeping skills of Ian Healy in a form relentlessly mastered through work ethic.

And the icing on the cake was Shane Warne. A unique bowler who psychologically bullied the opposition, understanding better than anyone he was bowling to a man, who has greater strengths and greater weaknesses than any computer.

Now I look at the current team:

Of them, only Michael Clarke, David Warner, Mitchell Johnson and Ryan Harris would be in contention for selection to that team.

Sure, guys like Peter Siddle and Brad Haddin are solid performers, Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith are showing signs of confidence and improvement.

But there are guys who were better than them during the golden years who never played a Test, and a lot of guy who only played a handful.

The key to this pace attack is Johnson. His ability to slice through opposition teams with a mixture of speed, aggression and tactical nous is reminiscent of the great Curtley Ambrose at times, even if their actions and variations are almost entirely different.

Just do not expect him to do it every innings and he has got to pick up his form when things are not going his way to truly be considered an elite Test bowler.

I hate to sound unpatriotic but, despite their crushing of a pathetic English team, this team does not have what it takes.

1) They do not want it bad enough.
2) They expect for it just to happen.
3) They do not believe they deserve it and incorporate that belief into every aspect of their training and playing.
4) The best years of half the team are behind them.
5) Apart from Warner, there is a mental weakness to the players under 30.

But than, objections are always found to teams on the rise. It is ultimately up to how they compete on the day and their ability to put stress on, and break, the cricket producing form of the individuals of the opposition cricket team.

They did that pretty well to a worn out English cricket team.

Hey mate, I can only judge on what I have watched. In 2008, their victory in Perth chasing more than 400 was one of those one off things. In reality, over the 6 matches played in 2008-2009, they only looked the better team in one of those tests... and again, last time they were here, they looked worse in two of the three tests. I did not watch the last series in SA, so I cannot comment there, but the series victories that they have had are hardly convincing and would probably have been defeats over 5 test series. All those players you mention are gun test players (well maybe not Philander, he will be found out soon enough), but I have yet to be convinced that they are a great team in the mold of WI and Australian teams of the past, as I said, I think that their victories against OZ were mentally tough lucky.

You are absolutely correct, Steyn and Philander are just so lucky it's not even true... Apart from that AB must be the luckiest batsmen in the world in all formats of the game and Amla is just as lucky. And that must make Kallis the luckiest guy in cricket for the last ten years or so, don't you think?

You could be onto something Outlier. If Marsh, Doolan and Henriques, or just two of them play, I can see an easy SA win

Man is it gonna suck to be an Aussie if they bomb on Wednesday. Every Aussie cricketer from Clark to Siddle and his dog has been preaching how awesome they are since the Ashes. FIGJAM has never applied more completey to any side. Can't wait!!

If the bails had fallen off here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyPiuY9UP3g NZ would've won a test series against England. Matt Prior went on to an unbeaten century and England held on (9 wickets down) for a draw. Prior has hardly scored any runs since. I reckon NZ would have the strongest under 25 team in the world (if such a team was picked). Also, apart from openers and spinners there is now a lot of depth

Thats right Clark, the last time NZ played Oz, but the first time in 24 years too. Embarrassing how you forgot that. But hey I'm glad NZ beat India cause if I'm not following Oz I'm following NZ. But like I said I'll take notice of NZ when they beat Oz, Eng & SA in a test series. I hope they can do it cause they exciting enough.

Reflects Lehmann who had a lot of trouble making test sides, but he was never mediocre. Who knows? Justin Langer was pretty mediocre for the first half of his career and than averaged 55 for the second half of his career. Wait and see on Marsh, we are hardly inundated with great batsmen at the moment.

Yeah, Clarke is good to watch in terms of his tactical acumen, but the cleanness of Warner's striking and the daring is just something else.

In a general sense they do. But in terms of Aus vs SA, Australia probably should of won all of those series. Credit where it is due, SA refused to give up, but the series they won were as much luck and a capacity for tenacity rather than superior cricket skill. 3 test series are often criticised for not being a reflection of which team is better. Bring in a test league I say.

Smith has been a part of many a mid innings collapse. Sure, his innings at the WACA was superb, but it was hardly the dominant performance of a player like Warner.

Going into the ashes, they would of been ranked second.

Um, we beat Australia the last time we played them in a test match... I'm not surprised you don't remember that, would be quite embarrassing. Just about as embarrassing as this...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJIFXPOQPaQ

I may be biased, but England's bowling attack would be 4th beat in the world at the very best after SA, Aus, NZ. Pakistan could probably put a case forward for being better to.

Pfffftttt, the Black Caps? Beat a hopeless WI and now beating a disinterested India. When the Black Caps can beat England, Australia or Sth Africa in a series I'll take them seriously. Everyone knows India are mud outside of India!

I think the Australian team is in good hands with all the young talent coming through. They just need to blood them sooner rather than later to avoid going through that period of time when everyone in the team is inexperienced.

He got man of the match for that. I mean he played well but didn't really deserve it. Bracewell would have got it if Channel 9 didn't let the viewers pick the MOM. Australia could have got bowled out for zero and one of them would have still got it.
