South Africa vs Australia live: Third Test, Day Three live scores, blog

By Suneer Chowdhary / Roar Guru

An untimely rain stalled the Australian progress in the third Test against South Africa which will make the third day of the game a rather important one as far as getting a result out of this game is concerned. Follow the action live from 7.00 pm AEDT.

Less than 40 overs were possible on the second day of the Cape Town Test match which puts the onus on to the visitors to force a result in the game.

They have a good part of three days to go with the overs adjusted for the rain to bowl South Africa out twice but they will also need to reckon with the fact that they may not either have the opportunity to enforce the follow-on or have the inclination to do that even if they get a chance to do that.

What goes without saying is that Australia will be looking to declare without facing a ball tomorrow and will need to do all the damage in the first innings.

They have a slightly different bowling live-up with the inclusion of James Pattinson, which will improve the freshness value of the attack and could help them when they bowl the second time in the game.

For now though, they will need to do much better than how they went about their business in the second Test.

Mitchell Johnson has the pace to test the South Africans in much the same manner as Morne Morkel had done on the first day but the big question is whether the pitch will assist him in any way.

For most part of the game, it’s looked to be a dead surface and it will now boil down to whether Johnson can extract some kind of unevenness, some life out of it to trouble the South African batsmen.

Ryan Harris will be coming on with question-marks around his form but the Aussie management has done well to show faith in him. Can he repay that faith by improving upon his poor showing this series so far?

There has been a lot of talk around how Nathan Lyon could well be the joker in the pack for the Aussies. He is the one genuine spinner across both the sides and has shown he can turn the ball prodigiously if the conditions are right.

As shown by the pair of JP Duminy and Dean Elgar, who shared five wickets in the innings thus far, there’s something in it for the tweakers.

With Shane Warne in the shed helping out the Australian slow bowlers – admittedly for the T20 format of the game – he could well have a huge say in the game, if not now, then in the second dig.

South Africa seemed to have recovered well from how they had gone in the opener but can they do that batting second will be worth a watch.

Their objective will be to bat long and hard through to the end of the day, and possibly into the second session of the fourth day to ensafe the game. Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and Duminy have shown what they are capable of and with Elgar having toughed it out in the last game, South Africa will be confident of their own ability from here on.

Well, that pretty much sets this up for an Aussie win, I managed to watch the last three partnerships for SA, Steyn has a lot of guts, but what the hell went wrong when we bowled?

What this means is that there are about 196 overs remaining in the game. Given the over-rates these days and couple of overs that will get reduced, we are looking at around 185 overs. Australia will need around 45-50 of those probably to get up to 200-plus and declare (unless we are looking at a freak collapse like the last game here between these two sides) and that would mean they would have 140 overs to capture 10 South African wickets in the second innings. In short, South Africa are staring at the wrong end of the barrel. They needed to bat way better than they did today, lose not more than five in the day probably. Reverse swing did them in. Back tomorrow with the fourth day's play then. Have a good time ahead.

And that ends the third day's play in Newlands with Australia at 0/27 in six overs. Warner has 25 of those runs, has gotten himself another start. Australia lead by 234.

So that's that, one more over to be bowled. Abbott to bowl it. 0/26 in 5.

Saffa commentator said this was a nightmare period to bat because you don't have enough time to go to stumps 25no. Meanwhile, Warner is 24no.

Oh dear, second four in a row and this is through wide mid-on! On a good length and he's still able to on-drive it through a diving mid-on fielder for another boundary. Graeme Smith has a long chat with Morkel and changes things around in the field. Just two slips and five men saving a single. 0/25 in the 5th

Just not getting his length right here Morkel. And Warner's not making it easier for him... ...very full and Warner has crunched it through wide mid-off for another four. 0/21 in the 5th

Much better from Abbott in terms of finding control. Just a single off his second over. 0/17 in 4. Five minutes remain in the day's play.

Warner might now be the best batter in the World. He's ranked 10, but will climb massively after this series. Chanderpaul amazingly at 39 years of age, will be 40 this year, i ranked 4 right now, wow. AB Devilliers is ranked no 1. Ross Taylor is ranked 5, surprised that high.

if aussies can get 200, in 2nd dig, a lead of 400, to much to chase on day 4 and 5. Take something special to get 400.

Abbott's started off with a maiden first up. Morkel continues and gets punched off the back foot through extra-cover for a four. That's come off the middle of the bat too! 0/13 in the 3rd

Someone in the Australian dressing room there had his binoculars out and was watching something intently. If I were to hazard a guess, it could well be having a look at what the Saffers are doing with the ball once it goes dead. There have been instances of this having happened before too, with the English dressing room keeping a tab on the Pakistani bowlers before that infamous Oval Test that was abandoned and forfeited in favour of England by Darrel Hair.

So Dale Steyn is on the field but Kyle Abbott will take up the new ball. Not Philander and definitely not Steyn!

A costly first over, nine from it as Warner quickly moves up to 8 with a four and a couple of braces. 0/9 in 1.

13 at the start of the innings but they will get only 5 or 6 in the time they have.

A single to Rogers is followed by Warner pulling one fine for a four! Too short and down the leg side from Morkel. 0/5 in the 1st
