Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos: NRL live scores, blog

By Alan / Roar Guru

Ben Barba returns to ANZ Stadium as public enemy number one as his former club the Canterbury Bulldogs host the Brisbane Broncos. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 8:05pm AEDT.

All eyes will be on Barba tonight as he aims to start his Broncos career on a high at the expense of the very club where he made his name.

Expect the Bulldogs to hit Barba hard and in numbers in defence in a bid to rattle the star they had previously called their own.

The Bulldogs and Broncos both come into this season having under-performed in 2013 and will be keen to get off to a strong start.

Both teams are evenly matched across the board, with the Bulldogs having a slight edge in the halves.

A Broncos backline containing the likes of Josh Hoffman and Barba however will cause plenty of havoc if the Bulldogs don’t respect possession.

Upfront the battle should be intense, with Broncos stars Sam Thaiday, Corey Parker, Alex Glenn and Matt Gillett coming up against Bulldogs enforcers Frank Pritchard, Tony Williams and Aiden Tolman.

Williams needs a big season after a poor 2013 and a strong performance tonight will do his confidence a world of good.

With the Broncos playing with inexperienced halves, the experience and direction offered by Josh Reynolds may be enough for the Bulldogs to scrape home.

Bulldogs by 6.

Not yet mate but i will. Is it fair to compare the Bronco's 1 team - 2 million population with any Sydney based club 9 teams - 4.6 million population to get a true indication of their long term sustainability? I get what your saying but the Bunnies have 5K more paid up members than the Broncos but doesn't make them any more viable or healthy than the team with the lowest season average crowd Bums on seats should be the cream on top of the financial cake and not what keeps a club afloat. Time for a swim....Latez

Again, Muzz, the health and viability of our rugby league clubs are not reliant on a healthy NRL. There are many factors which you have stated that affects our clubs. Have you had the chance to read the link provided?

Souths now have 27K membership but have no leagues club or assets and a reported huge dept.Sharks on the other hand have approx 12K membership and smaller average crowds in comparison but own their ground and have a leagues club and stand to make a large profit from the development of the surrounding grounds.Mr pizza man is no different to Rusty becoming a stakeholder in the Bunnies. So although things may look bright for Souths in the short term, what will happen when they have their turn down the bottom of the ladder as all clubs do and have they any security to safe guard them against any risk such as the ASADA thing.Souths current purple patch is not a true indicator of the clubs health and viability and although the Sharks have the ASADA thing to deal with their long term future looks brighter than most would think.

I'm sorry, Muzz, but no. The ARL/NRL might be profiting financially but clubs aren't. Sharks recently just had their debts paid by some pizza guy didn't they? The NRL didn't give a handout, for that would be a conflict of interest, especially given the current situation surrounding the Sharks. I'm not sure if you took the time to read the Broncos financial report but the amount of money generated by fans is extremely vital to the success of the Brisbane Broncos. Fair enough mate. So in all of this have i managed to convince you that there is no point in people complaining about poor crowd numbers and that having the highest paid membership and highest average crowd is not a true indicator of a teams health and sustainability : )

That I'll pay credit for, but i'm a big fan of David Gallop, Muzz. Not because he is currently running the A-League but because of the work he did for Rugby League.

Credit to Dave Smith and his staff as the game has never been so strong and healthy.Balancing the books, delivering a surplus and investing in the future needs to be commended along with so many other initiatives. We may be looking at $400 million plus added to the next TV rights deal on the back of Smith and his teams work.

Well, there is nothing gained by people on a forum whinging about crowds, but clubs need to be mindful of it, because it directly translates to money. Because billion dollar TV deals sound like rolling around a bank vault Scrooge McDuck style, but people forget, first you divide it by five to get the yearly sum, then you hack out fat chunks of money for running the ARL, for running grassroots, for league advertising, then you divide it by 16 because they're a whole lot of other clubs at the feeding trough. In the end, it comes down to $5 to $7m. And seriously, match receipts and membership should be plugging at least this much into your budget. I hear people say pfft, crowds/members don't matter because Billion Dollar Deal Is Billion Dollars. But you have to keep an eye on what that money actually trickles down to when everyone has had their cut.

The removal of the first and last rights is the big one though. The health and viability of a code depends greatly on it's CEO.Gallop was ultra conservative and under sold the last TV rights deal and left a lot of money wells untapped so i was just asking your thoughts as i know you follow the A League but if its to much trouble don't worry about it. Also its never a given that the NRL was going to make a surplus.Give credit where credit due.Dave Smith is doing a great job.

The 50 million surplus is only based on the TV deal money. It was a deadset given they were going to make a surplus. Also, what does Gallop and the A-League have to do with this?

I'd say if league negotiate well channel 10 will pick up two games a week and they'll throw money at voss and maybe see about sterlo and/or Matty johns. Although I don't really like Matty as a commentator he does have the personality for it and can be neutral (unlike Ben ikin who claps at broncos games)

LIke i said a big crowd and paid up membership is great and i will add is important but not the be all and end all when it comes to measuring the health and viability of a club or code. The key is the best available governance that a club or code can afford.Dave Smith and the $50 million surplus is evidence of that. How will you know if Gallop under values the next A League TV rights deal ?

I also like Sterlo. Very unbiased and has great knowledge of the game and what play makers should be doing. Greg Alexander I enjoy too.

And yet your CEO spoke with Ryan O'Connell on this very website about the importance of fan engagement, fans bums on seats and memberships numbers. It isn't a problem one club or two clubs face. Every club is striving to earn more, through other avenues and that's the fans putting their money directly into the club through the form of match day support.

Thats the job of a qualified club board and CEO to work out and work on.My team the Roosters haven't been known for their big crowd numbers and we currently sit on only 12k membership but where still here and have 4 leagues clubs under the Easts group that do very well.Sponsorship is never an issue and merchandise sales are always strong. Souths need a leagues club in the right area with pokies, function rooms for hire, bistro etc etc.Your members will just go and put their money in another pup or clubs pokies if you don't offer them.

Oh god I know right? I still don't mind rabs I think it's goulds fault he gets into those stupid conversations but voss has easily the most exciting voice atm and doesn't get carried away talking about how amazing the broncos are (Hadley) or about the string in players shorts (Gould). If he isn't commentating every Sunday game at least by next year he should join fox sports.
