Lions vs Reds: Super Rugby live scores

By The Roar / Editor

The Reds play the second leg of their South African sojourn against the surprise packets of the Super Rugby competition so far, the Lions, in Johannesburg. Join us right here on The Roar for live scores from 2am AEDT.

The Reds copped a tough fixture for the first game of their trip to the Republic last week, coming up against the undefeated, ladder-topping Sharks. While they were very competitive for long periods of the match, they didn’t come away with points often enough to challenge the Sharks.

On the flipside, every time the Durban side got close to the sticks, Francois Steyn or Pat Lambie would slot a goal. So while it was two tries apiece, the game was never really close.

The Reds can expect similar tactics from the Lions, whose fly-half Marnitz Boshoff has been pinpoint with the boot so far this season. He doesn’t miss when you give away penalties in the Lions attacking half, so the Reds will have to be wary about infringing anywhere within 50 metres of the posts at altitude.

The Lions have had a tremendous start the season. Boilovers against the Stormers, Blues and Cheetahs see them sitting at 3-2 currently. They no doubt see this game against the Reds as a serious opportunity to move toward the pointy end of the table.

No one could have expected them to take a top six position, and tonight will be a real litmus test for them.

The Reds should be better for the gallop last week. Will Genia looked sharp against the Sharks. Quade Cooper, too, is showing some of the signs that he is playing close to his best.

While they are missing Chris Feauai-Sautia, they have a very adequate replacement in Ben Tapuai, so there are no excuses for them.

Join us for all the scores and banter in the early morn for the eastern states (late, late evening in the West). Feel free to keep the discussion going by leaving a comment below.

To whom? Perhaps Bray's boss. Not sure really. Yes, its only a game for folks like me. But its paypacket and careers for those in the competition. Not sure its only about a single knock-on decision. It may be an issue of judgement of SANZAR and the standards they hold. Then again, I may be seeing more than what's there. I guess time will tell.

To whom? Andre Watson has already asked the irb for a ruling on the knock on try question as there are divergent views on that law. Bray would have looked long and hard at the footage before this statement as he risks looking like even more of a tool. The outraged supporter card gets old quickly - we should know. Best to move on or risk losing all currency.

I think Joubert most guilty of being a hometown ref regardless of nationality, and also most likely to ref on reputation and perception rather than what is actually happening. For quite a while he was infected with McCaw Awe....

I'm not arguing with you about the Cheetahs v Blues game BB. The Argentinian ref was completely out of his depth on the Super Rugby stage and it was unfortunate that the Cheetahs were on the wrong end of it. His pedantic refereeing decisions at the start of the game was a sign of an outside ref that had not even debuted yet but still under the pump to perform or risk being dropped. That was Sanzar's fault. Berry and Van De Merwe are supposed to be experienced referees, they have far less excuses than Pastrana. Personally, I prefer SA refs. Joubert, Kaplan, Peyper all have their bad days at times but are all 1st tier referees, especially Joubert who has had fewer than most when it comes to bad games (I seem to be constantly reminded of a certain RWC final where he was accused of favouring the home team even though he let multiple french transgressions and an eye gouge go, but I digress) but usually he's clear and concise and regarded as one of the best referees today. Even up to the point where Dave Rennie wanted him appointed for the 2012 Super Rugby Final despite the Sharks being the opposing team. Also, just putting out there that the best sevens ref by far is Rasta Rasivhenge, I really hope he does some 15's refereeing from time to time. I don't care that Van De Merwe and Berry are South African, Bryce Laurence is a kiwi and Stu Dickinson is an Aussie, that doesn't mean they aren't poor referees and / or not up to standard.

Ah, OK, but he referreed the Cheetahs, forward pass (similar to Bryce) which wasn't, yellow card ( harsh), Try awarded illegal (refer to Bryce Lawrence) and yet somehow the penalty count was 12 to 10.

The Chiefs. Van de Merwe channeled Bryce Laurence in the game with his non reffereeing of the breakdown.

You think Joubert is a good ref because Joubert always panics when reffing SA vs NZ/AUS games because he knows people like you will be thinking that he cheats for South African sides so to counter balance this he goes overboard, usually destroying the SA teams in the penalty count. So no, he is not the best ref. He is only the best ref in your mind because of that reason.

Joubert is the best SA ref because he is not in the normal mould of SA refs - obstinate, humorless and authoritarian. Sounds a bit like the SA rugby commentators, now I come to think of it!!

As stated before, reality and your perception of it seems to be two different things. Stormers game was a Aus ref, Aus tmo. Bulls game in Canberra duh, doos.

I thought the the refing in the sharks game was of a much higher standard then the lions game. In both cases Reds did not deserve to win but I do find the lose to the lions hard to stomach with some questionable calls late in the game - but the reds should have been better and not ended up in that position.

I hate complaining about the refs too- I don't think this guy was biased, he was just not up to standard. It isn't all against Australia, it happens very frequently to any visiting team. The issue is that this needs to improve - with everything else improving in the sport, why is this aspect so poor. As for the reds supporters, like me we are just frustrated that we didn't get a fair go 2 weeks in a row. I'm sure supporters of any team would be similarly disappointed if it happened to them. I don't think it is appropriate to just say rugby supporters should cop it as part of the game, poor refereeing doesn't have to be...

Two weeks in a row now that Berry has made poor decisions late in the game. A lot of work in the NRL is being done on the quality of refereeing decisions while under physical stress, It is definitely a factor affecting judgement calls and one of the reason they switched to two refs. Maybe Berry just isn't fit enough to go the distance ar S15 pace.

Well Freddy, I'd certainly prefer to be on my side of the argument than yours, as you thrash around and try to defend the indefensible. But I thank you for the entertainment. Your continued, and incredibly ironic, use of infantlile analogies to bolster your tenuous and rather immature position leaves me feeling, I must admit, just a little smug. Surely you can see its not so important as to who suffers from biased and poor refereeing? Its a blight on the game. By all means rail against it, when it happens to your teams Freddy. You won't find me arguing against you in such circumstances. But please, spare me the puerile outbursts in support of poor officiating because you believe you've suffered from it in the past. To support it (poor officiating) when you obviously feel you've suffered so grieviously from it, shows a distinct lack of cognitive reasoning, doesn't it?

I agree with all those apparently bum calls Pete but the fact was that the Reds just didn't turn up for the match. Coopers head was like Nick Cummins proverbial kid who'd fallen from the tree, he just wasn't in it. Daft kicks to the sides, poor defense, poor decision making, particularly at the end with only 6 forwards out on their feet and a field goal to draw the match was on offer. Reds forwards lacked cohesion at the breakdown and the backs guilty of the same with ball in hand.
