NSW versus the Rest of Australia showdown

By sheek / Roar Guru

I saw an intriguing article yesterday – “Imagine Aussie cricket without NSW.

It certainly caught my attention and had me thinking, what if we selected an ‘all-time best NSW XI’ and ‘all-time best Rest of Australia XI?’

How would they compare?

Selection would be made along ‘state of origin’ lines whereby a player made his first-class debut.

In an overwhelming number of cases, players debuted for the state they were born and raised in.

Well, I’ve had a crack at it and would be interested in the thoughts of other Roarers.

All-time NSW XI:
Victor Trumper
Arthur Morris
Don Bradman (also SA-c)
Stan McCabe
Allan Border (also Queensland)
Steve Waugh
Adam Gilchrist (also WA-wk)
Alan Davidson
Ray Lindwall (also Queensland)
Bill O’Reilly
Glenn McGrath

Such is the extraordinary depth and quality of this team, then consider this second XI: Bob Simpson (also WA), Bill Brown (also Queensland), Charlie Macartney, Michael Clarke, Doug Walters, Monty Noble, Richie Benaud, Bert Oldfield (wk), Jeff Thomson (alsoQ ueensland), Charles Turner, Fred Spofforth (also Vic).

All-time Rest Of Australia XI:

Bill Ponsford (Vic)
Matt Hayden (Queensland)
Ricky Ponting (Tas-c)
Neil Harvey (Vic/NSW)
Greg Chappell (SA/Queensland)
Keith Miller (Vic/NSW)
Mitchell Johnson (Queensland/WA)
Shane Warne (Vic)
Jack Blackham (Vic-wk)
Clarrie Grimmett (Vic/SA)
Dennis Lillee (WA/Tas)

A ROA second XI isn’t too bad either: Bill. Lawry (Vic),Bill Woodfull (Vic), Ian Chappell (SA), Bob Cowper (Vic/WA), Mike Hussey (WA), Jack Ryder (Vic), Don Tallon (Queensland-wk), Jason Gillespie (SA), Hugh Trumble (Vic), Craig McDermott (Queensland), Bruce Reid (WA).

It’s possible I might have missed the odd player here or there in which case I apologise

The author of the article I read went on to say the current Australian team contains six regular selections: Michael Clarke, Steve Smith, David Warner, Brad Haddin, Shane Watson and Nathan Lyon (although Watson and Lyon began their careers elsewhere).

While Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Moises Henriques await in the wings.

Furthermore, 11 of 28 contracted CA players are from NSW.

Finally, since the Sheffield Shield was first competed for in 1892/93, NSW has won 46 titles; Victoria 28; Western Australia 15; South Australia 13; Queensland seven and Tasmania three.

Like it or not, I imagine Australian cricket would be very poor without the contribution of NSW.

Not sure if the team selected is a mix of home grown and imports, Hayden, Healy, Johnson,Symonds & Mcdermott aren't mports? We have had imports such as Viv Richards, Rusi Surti, Gary Cosier, Alvin Kallicharan, Tom Graveney, Ray Philips & Malcolm Franke as well as current players like Ryan Harris & Peter Forrest to bolster the squad over the years but many of the aussie players moved here for the opportunity. Qld found the way to win the shield was by developing players after the debacle of bringing botham here. Surely Stuart Law deserved more than one test innings for a 50 no Martin Love was the best Qld batsman to never get a chance. Love & Law would carry the current test side.

I'd be interested in the roar contributors most overrated NSW origin test cricket side, guys who made the australian team ahead of more talented players from other states & match it up against the unluckiest players from the other states who missed out because of the NSW bias. Here's my NSW (origin) side from late 70's onwards: Andrew Hilditch Ian Davis Trevor Chappell Peter TooheyGraham beard Michael Bevan (c) Phil Emery Mike Whitney Nathan Bracken Dave Gilbert Peter Taylor

Cox in my view was an outstanding batsmen and as good in all round batting skills as Taylor, Hayden, Slater, Elliot, Blewett at an early age but will never know how he would have performed or developed at Test level as unlike the other 5 didn't get a look in. Hookes and Lehman where prodigies as teenagers but on the outer most of their cricket life and being outspoken larrakins at times didnt help. They where under pressure and scrutiny when selected and never too far away from the selectors axe. They where not given the chances the regal /nobel NSW test player is granted by being of NSW lineage.

sheek Dean Jones had to be looked at , his record for Victoria is awsome, and Darren Lehmann has to be looked at too, along with Siddons.

Sheek , nice one. Actually watched him play for Qld once and a few times for the World XI in his famous white towling hat. You are probably right , a classy Test player who batted and had success against the best test bowling attacks around the World. Hick did score 40,000 + runs in his career and in full flight was a master batsmen. Burge, Love, Ogilvie, Law, Wessells 5 fine batsmen who all hit the ball hard on their day and put a price on their wicket. Bugger it, let's put in Bill Brown to add some old school.

I think that other states, Victoria in particular, are also disadvantaged by the young talent losses to afl.. The normal tall lanky type of athlete I assume would be swayed by the afl early leaving cricket only the really committed or what's left. Whether the thought is credible I'm not sure but I'm sure it wouldn't help..?

"As New South Welshmen, we demand success." That sort of comment makes me laugh, because of course, no other set of fans ever demands success.

Forget Hick, Majid Khan (Imran's cousin) played a season there in 1973/74.

It is a cultural thing. As New South Welshmen, we demand success. NSW struggled the last 5 or 6 years, up until last year. NSW got rid of the CEO in Dave Gilbert and coach Anthony Stuart. They were replaced by Andrew Jones and Trevor Bayliss respectively. The result, a Shield title. Let's put in perspective, NSW won the Shield this week without Clarke, Warner, Watson, Haddin, Starc, Bollinger and Cummins. Sure Watson is a Queenslander, but other states have poached the likes of Hughes and Khawaja. Meanwhile other states like Victoria continue to recruit from other states. Example, Wade, Hastings, Rogers, Hussey etc. And don't contribute heavily to the test side. This year, Victoria came stone motherless last. Victorian cricket have some massive problems

To be fair, the likes of Brayshaw were never in the Test mix and Cox, as fine a player as he was, was swimming a deep pool with the likes of Taylor, Slater, Hayden, Elliot and Blewett. And Lehmann and Hookes played enough Test cricket to show that maybe they weren't as good as we thought.

Ducko got the % around the wrong way. Thanks for putting it straight. Plenty of depth in the batsmen in the 90's onwards prevented us seeing a lot these guys have a long test career however Its fair to say a few of them never where given a shot or even spoken about by selectors even after a Stella shield season or 3. The modern professional cricket player now had 3 forms to show the selectors as well as the IPL and good or bad I'm not sure can score a few quick 50's in the big bash in a month of cricket and be in front of selectors eyes where the past the shield guy had to perform for a number of seasons in the shield to even get noticed at all.

If you're going to use stats, you've at least got to use the correct ones. Last century, the NSW population was never above 40% of total let alone above 60% as claimed. It mostly hovered around 35%. I would also argue that the list of players you mentioned, whilst unlucky not to play more tests, missed out because of the depth around at the time. If around today, they would all play many tests. Stuart McGill would have played more tests if Shane Warne wasn't around in the same era, for example.

im gonna take a different tack Why does NSW produce so many quality Cricketers? (Indeed other states basically take the players than NSW cannot fit in its own team A) Population size? NSW does have the biggest population so on pure numbers it would produce more players? B) Better established/funded cricket club system? C) Success breeds Success? Do kids see the NSW players getting a good chance of getting into the Aus team and this spurs them to keep playing to get that chance? D) Other? Rather than pick a best of the best team it might be better to look at the reasons why Australia relies so much on NSW Cricket. If Victoria does indeed surpass NSW one in terms of sheer population size, will they become the new NSW?

The Queensland Team post 1960 with all imports allowed as we need them are a talented bunch I feel. I would like to see any team of the past 50 years face up to this lot on green gabba wicket around November. 1. M.Hayden 2. G. Hick 3. V. Richards 4. G. Chappell 5. A. Border 6. I. Botham 7. I Healy 8. M. Johnston 9. W.Hall 10. C. McDermott 11. J. Thompson 12. A. Symonds ( fielding only) ............................

262 Shield Hundreds approx between the 10 players mentioned. I left out Bevan as he is NSW and was given a few chances at Test level but didn't quite grasp the short ball at times.
