Blues query McLean on AFL sub reaction

By Roger Vaughan / Wire

Carlton have called Brock McLean to account, but have accepted his reason for staying on the bench at three-quarter time of last week’s AFL match.

The midfielder was subbed out of the match against Richmond on Thursday night at the MCG and stayed on the bench, rather than join the three-quarter time huddle.

Coach Mick Malthouse said McLean’s explanation was that was the first time he had been handed the red vest and he was unsure of the rules.

“I have not seen anyone throw a party (for) getting the red guernsey,” Malthouse told Channel Seven’s Talking Footy.

“I spoke to him about that and he had one reason – that he hadn’t been subbed before.

“This is fair, because I didn’t even know the rule … that once you put that (the vest) on, I don’t know if you’re allowed back on the ground.

“He didn’t ask anyone – that was the only sin he made.”

While the Blues accepted McLean’s explanation, Malthouse also made it clear they were unhappy.

He said it was enough discipline for McLean that they raised the matter with him.

“We would have liked him, as a leader, on the ground,” Malthouse said.

“We’ve taken issue with it and we’re not going to hide it.

“He came up with the reasoning and we have to accept that.”

Recruiting and list management has been poor since about 2001. Same people have been at the club the whole time. Seems pretty obvious who the problem people are.

Carlton need a full clean out of their development and recruiting staffs, neither has been very good and the team will continue to suffer regardless of who is head coach.

You wish Ratts was still running the team? Are you mad? Who do you reckon recruited all these duds that are not performing week in week out? Hampson, O'Hailpin(and his brother), Gibbs, Kreuzer, Warnock, Lucas and traded the likes of Jacobs and Griggs away. We kept Ratten on for about three years too long in my book. He was outcoached regularly, could not teach a drunken dwarf how to fall off a bar stool either. Turn it up about Ratten, a bloody cheap dud of a coach.

Malthouse," I didn't know the rules" Who's he kidding, he just doesn't know how to coach a team that isn't Full of stars, Wish Ratts was still at the Blues.
