Mundine vs Clottey: 'Grand Master' Clottey belts Mundine in Newcastle - win by UD

By Tristan Rayner / Editor

Anthony Mundine has lost his fight against Ghanian Joshua Clottey by Unanimous Decision 116-108, 115-109, 117-108 with the fight going the full twelve rounds.

Mundine was knocked-down multiple times in the fight as Clottey showed none of the ring rust that may have been present after just two fights in the past four years.

Mundine and Clottey embraced in the final round as the fight went the distance – Clottey telling Mundine he ‘loves him’ post-fight.

Mundine said he got caught early and couldn’t recover, giving ‘props’ to Clottey for being the better man.

“I tried to hurt him late. I wasn’t tight enough, my defence wasn’t enough – full credit to him. I was doing pretty good in the first Round 1 but then after that… You gotta have a go. You gotta aspire to be the best.”

Mundine, when pressed about retirement, said he’d take a moment to “relax” before making any decision, talking briefly about fighting old foes Danny Green and Daniel Geale.

Comments from most corners spoke of Mundine showing a gutsy effort to stick with Clottey despite the punishment being inflicted.

A monumental win by Clottey and a great performance in Newcastle.

Yeah well, I said it all before, in the build up to this farce just four comments at that stage so people were real interested in our Anthony. And my criticisim - correct in all detail. And now that Clottey has employed his mug as a canvas cleaning rag I guess the only thing for him to do is too (wait for it) enter politics! And I'll be right about that as well, but not during a liberal government. It's now the 12 Apr and just twenty comments later - who cares?

With "the man" finally being whipped all I want now is for the Sharks to win the NRL.

Mundine never was a good fighter, he was more of a bully boy that picked apponents that he could overcome, he made a couple of mistakes in his career, one was fighting Clottey.

Look, I hear in real life he is a really good guy but, I only know his media personality. That personality is that of a loud, big mouth who, shows no humility or common understanding of the Nations psyche. If most people like to see him lose (I'd never want to see him get bashed) it is his own stupid fault because he's tried to act like a mini Muhammad Ali without the incredible speaking skills, sharp wit and boxing technique he possessed. Some say he's smart but I doubt that too. If he was so smart he should never have come out saying that the US deserved the 9/11 attacks. He shot himself and, his potential pro boxing career in the head after that comment. He locked himself out of the most lucrative market in the world. No amount of promotional gloss can cover the fact that he fought nobodies and 'over the hill' boxers for the majority of his boxing career. Had he shown some humility he would've got the Aussie public behind him but, even as a footballer he was embarrassing with his mouth.

It is unfortunate when it appears most people love watching him get bashed. He had bad good will coming out of League and has rubbed ppl up the wrong way for a long time. Last night was one of the few times I have heard him humble. I don't think it is a very good career - it is an ok career. for a guy that talked up his capabilities he fell short against the big names like Kessler, Clottey and Otke. He never really fought anyone at the top of their game (Mosely was/is well passed it). Had he really wanted to fight the best he would have based himself in the USA and spent several years working through their system.

No doubt the man has made some mistakes in his life/career, who hasn't, but I still think he deserves some respect for what was/is a pretty good boxing career. He got outclassed last night but had the courage to finish the fight. I think we saw the true Mundine after the fight and he was pretty gracious and lucid in defeat. Got beaten by stronger than him, nothing to be ashamed of imo

I'm not a fan of Mundine's, but the only other two boxers that we really know about are Daniels Geale and Green. And that's mostly because they were rivals to Mundine. If nothing else, he gave them profiles they probably wouldn't otherwise have had. Boxing got a raised profile wherever it was linked to him. But there's no lasting legacy from his career.

What map?? The map of Newcastle suburbs or NSW?? Fair Dinkum mate. He's fought 'over the hill' fighters or, nobodies glossed with lot's of promotion. Sven Ottke was a fair dinkum fight which, Mundine was close to a win but, since then the only decent fighters he's fought that wern't over the hill or, over 35 you could number on 1 finger. As soon as he fought a full time boxer he got done. Buy yourself a GPS

I believe Choc's main objective was to be in control of his own career, finances etc. Some of the fights that he should have taken weren't good deals and signing with other promotions meant that they effectively owned you as a fighter and they also took a huge cut of your purse. Choc wanted to control his own destiny so he took the path he chose. It hasn't worked out as planned but such is life. He could have gone the other route and gotten caught up in the politics or just been unsuccessful. This way he's still been 'unsuccessful' but he's been able to keep alot more of the money..

Mundine was conning anyone who bothered to listen to him that he had any chance in hell of ever fighting Mayweather. Anthony who?? To his credit he did get up 5 times but, maybe it's just me but those punches that floored him............they didn't look that damaging at all. I think his chin should be retired at least. That way, we wouldn't hear him talk anymore.

Peter Thomson the former golfer is happy. Now it will be Mundine that will be referred to as "Five-times".

Couldn't agree more WQ he certainly had the speed and skill ten years ago it was just wasted on some very ordinary opponents.

All I can say is what a shame he wasted his talent chasing money fights instead of chasing the extent of his ability. I still believe if he had decided to push hard and chase the bigger fights when in his prime he would have received the glory he was chasing.

I didn't watch the fight infact this is the first article I've read about it and it sounds like mundine was humble in defeat, imagine how things would've been different if he had started his career with the same humbleness rather than the arrogance shown! the australian public I think would've embraced him and may have catapulted him to bigger fights. It's a real shame.
