Coach angry with sub-standard Roar

By Laine Clark / Wire

They say you should train the way you play – and that’s what has Brisbane Roar coach Mike Mulvey fuming ahead of Saturday night’s A-League regular season finale against Central Coast at Suncorp Stadium.

For the second straight day Mulvey fired a rocket up the runaway minor premiers after a sub-standard display on the paddock but was quick to rule out complacency.

Mulvey even hoped it would work to his advantage as a full squad of players jockeyed for spots for the first time this season.

“This hasn’t been our best week of training, I will be completely honest, in terms of quality,” a less than impressed Mulvey said.

“What we served up today and yesterday was not good enough.

“And I will be letting the players know in no uncertain terms that that is not acceptable.

“We were chasing rather than keeping the ball.

“Everyone is playing for their spot for the finals.

“The proof will be in the pudding tomorrow night.”

But Mulvey added: “There’s no complacency in this place I can assure you of that.

“It was a lack of concentration.”

Brisbane are the only team who could be forgiven for lacking concentration ahead of the A-League regular season final round.

They are 13 points clear on top while the rest of the finals contenders are in a last-gasp scramble for a top-six finish.

The third-placed Mariners could finish anywhere from second to sixth depending on weekend results.

“But that’s (Mariners coach) Phil Moss’ problem,” Mulvey said.

“It may affect his team’s selection. The other results will dictate what they will do I think.

“That’s the only consideration I have given to the opposition.”

The crunch weekend has again posed the question: “should all final minor round games be played at the same time?”

Mulvey had no problem with games being played at different times.

But he added: “That’s easy for me to say”.

His only headache was finalising a bench now that Socceroos defender Ivan Franjic (ankle) is back in the starting side.

Henrique, Jean Carlos Solorzano, James Donachie, Steve Lustica, Diogo Ferreira, Jack Hingert and Corey Brown are vying for four bench spots.

JB, thanks but Im well aware of that & wasn't suggesting for a minute that Moss had devised the system, just executed it rather well. I am of the opinion though that MM's comments were grudging & a bit patronizing, as were Bruce's. Dunno, probably just me! cheers Mick

Bondy Thanks for the reply and hope you understand my feelings when I read about this 'new" way of setting up a team. .Like you, I suspect many of the pundits who are going into raptures over how well teams are defending, have never seen catenaccio played in real life. Many people seeking all out end to end action don't like to watch it but it is a legitimate tactic and CCM did play it very well. Cheers jb

Jb - I agree. Apparently they were training against a compact defence during the week. If they didn't use the width during this game then they have two weeks to figure that out in case it comes up in the semi final. As it appears they will be playing the lowest placed winner of Victory, Sydney and Adelaide - I'll safely assume Victory and Adelaide won't try this tactic based on their playing styles. As for SFC I'm not sure what their style is, so they could try this tactic. i'm assuming Jets won't beat SFC by 2 goals today, so Roar's 'bogey' side won't be coming back to Suncorp.

Ian- MM,s final thought was the most important. He nailed the problem in the statement before when he stated ----- "they got us to do what they wanted us to do,and that is to play through the middle more often than not." Classic Catennacio. The last sentence is an indictment on his own team 'We didn't use the width as well as we could" In my eyes that is the third time this season Roar has faced this problem Newcastle took maximum points playing exactly the same way and MM is right on the button, his team has to learn how to counter the tactic,if not the same thing will happen again. jb.

Bondy - Don't know how old you are but I first saw that tactic used by Fiorentina in Glasgow back in 1959. It is based on an idea introduced into football by an Austrian coach back in 1936 when, given the Swiss national team job, he admitted he didn't have the players to play against Europe's top countries and so schooled players to play accordingly. The genesis of the idea was called "Verrou" and the Italians brought it to it's optimum peak around 1970 but it was probably consigned to the tactics manual around 1967 when Celtic virtually ran Inter Milan off the field utilisiing speed allied to aggression to knock the Italians right out of their stride. The tactic ,as I said, requires tremendous organisation ,application and discipline and I for one do not blame Phil Moss,or for that matter Gary Von Egmond for using the tactic when coming to Suncorp.I tend to watch and see how well the team sticks to their task and their opponent to see how they will counteract the tactic for the one way to "break" it is to get an early goal but in saying that the one way to strengthen the practising team's resolve is for them to get a breakaway or two and score a goal or goals. That's exactly what CCM did and I can only say I admired their use and application to achieve a result. Conversely it shows up a weakness in Roar's comprehension on what they are facing and as I said, after 3 examples this year, the message should be starting to sink in. If not, others will copy. Getting back to the game,I too enjoyed it but I suspect for different reasons than you would give. Cheers mate jb

JB As Mossy pointed out after the match last night that it can be seen as parking the bus but if you've got a structured or regimented plan to play that way then your not bereft of ideas once you have possession , to combat the dominance in possession of your opponent. I still believe I'm seeing those tactics employed today I.E AC Milan vs Barca and can prove effective . I also feel the roar snatched at some of their opportunities last night through frustration " young" Petratos being the primary one. Enjoyable match too. There's no question who plays the best or most enjoyable football to watch in the HAL, Brisbane Roar..

Mick - here are more quotes from Mulvey - rather than just highlighting its easier to spoil than create - which it is, he gave Moss credit for the job he's done this year. 'I want to give Phil Moss a lot of credit because I think he's done a great job at the Central Coast Mariners,' Mulvey said. 'However, at the same time, I don't want to seem like I'm criticising, but it's a lot easier to spoil than create. 'And that's what they came to do tonight, and very clinically they got us on the counter-attack, and if you watch football from all over the world, that's a classic snatch and grab situation. 'They came here and they were very, very determined, incredibly disciplined, and they got us to do what they wanted us to do, and that is to play through the middle more often than not. 'We didn't really use the width as well as we could.'

TK "We did break the Mariners down"????.I can distinctly remember the commentator saying that despite a huge differential in the number of passes made by the 2 teams (a ridiculous figure) Roar had had 1 shot at goal compared with CCM's 8.You say the CCM performance was good in attack,it wasn't nearly as good as they way they presented their defensive wall to their opponents who were completely out-thought,and out-played on the night. jb.

Mick - The tactics employed by CCM last night are at least 50 years old and it is a credit to the CCM players that they maintained the application and discipline to play the tactic out to it's ultimate goal, winning, preferably with a clean sheet. On the other side of the field were a team that were actually lured into playing the game exactly the way CCM wanted them to and it is not the first time this season this has happened to the runaway leaders,Newcastle employed the same tactics twice and snared full points..It is not pretty to watch but anyone who fobs the tactic off with that terrible description,"parking the bus" has a very shallow knowledge of how a football tactic is set up,and the discipline required to make it work for 90 minutes. As far as the adjectives "spoil" and "create" are concerned, that is a cop-out,for aren't those 2 adjectives closely allied to the two main opposites in the game "defend" and "attack ".???? Success can only be measured by the final score. jb

well we did break the mariners down just didnt finish the chances. The ccm performance was good in attack lots of pace and steffanuto shown up again out of position and too slow to track back which resulted in a goal. but every team has their aging players, just dont know where hes going to be next year with his extra years contract.

I found Mulveys comments after the match just a little bit annoying, saying that it's easier to spoil than create. It was no kick fest & while they did play behind the ball, the counters were incisive & very effective. Sure CCM dont have the cattle at the moment to play like them, but that was a fantastic deployment of the talent & resources that they do have. Heard the same sort of hubris from Bruce Djite during the break. Credit where its due please.

No probs, Bondy. Happy for The Roar to forward my e-mail to you, or anyone on this Forum, who has a love for Football. All of us who truly love The Beautiful Game may not always agree on every football issue, but it's great to have comrades (like yourself) who are knowledgeable about The Game & willing to enter robust discussion ... rather than the clowns, who come on here and claim "I watch sockah" because they watch EPL goal highlights on Fox Sports News.
