My New South Wales Blues team

By Myles Stedman / Roar Guru

This year there seems to be a much healthier number of Origin bolters for the desperate New South Wales Blues, which no doubt makes selection a lot more interesting.

I am not a fan of squad overhauls, but some players have forced my hand. Many of these selections were no-brainers, but I will outline those that really got my brain ticking.

Sticking with incumbent James Maloney was the first big decision I had to make. It’s no secret Maloney and his Roosters have had an average year compared to last, but both look like they have been regaining their mojo over the last week weeks. Maloney is a classy a player with ball in hand, has a good running game, and will rise to the occasion again if selected for Origin 1 in Brisbane on the 28th of May.

In the hotter-than-hell no. 7 jersey I have picked Josh Reynolds. Reynolds was present on the bench in last year’s series, and this season he gets his start in a jersey that has been Mitchell Pearce’s for too long. He has the size, strength and defence necessary in Origin, especially when partnering the less defensively-capable Maloney. However concerns do arise over the lack of a kicking game required at 7 and it is on this point that he may miss out.

Boyd Cordner’s ascent to the top rung of back-rowers in the NRL should be complete when he is named as one of three starting back-rowers for the opening Origin game at Lang Park. Cordner made his debut for both New South Wales and Australia last year, and to top off his breakout campaign, he was named Dally M second-rower of the year.

Shaun Fensom has missed even City-Country representation in all of his five years at Canberra, which is extremely surprising considering what he brings to the table; great defence and a mountain of work. In just his third year in the league, Fensom broke the world record for tackles in a match, with 75 against the Bulldogs. This year he is averaging 46 tackles a game, and leads his team in total tackles by well over 100 – the kind of grunt work required in Origin.

You can be in any winning side in the Comp but that don't make you ready for Origin. Origin is a far more up-tempo game that is played 'at lightening speed', a speed Pearce has but fails miserably to use at Origin level. Why this is so baffes me as he 'is a talented player'. He has let NSW down really, and most people know it. Just look at the naming of the teams on this blog? We 'NEED PEARCE' to up his game but 'twice bitten, once shy', so he should go as he has not played up to his best last origin, nor the one before and he ain't doing anything spectacular 'now' to warrant his selection in the NSW Team this year.

It sounds good to me but try getting that through to Daley! Send it to NRL NSW and ask them to pass it onto to Daley, or someone that can talk some sense into him.

So what do you suggest, keeping Pearce there to do the Job which he's proven time and time again that he can't?

Experiment over with Pearce full stop. Yes he has potential, yes he has flare, yes he is Laurie Daley buddy's son, and yes he is a pretty boy, but he has done absolutely nothing what-so-ever to earn the Blues Jersey or to retain it this year either. He should be 'coming up with tricky tricks' when the pressure is on QLD and NSW are smelling a goal, but for some unknown reason he holds back. He should be a fast kick and chaser, he's got agility and flare, so why can't he? I think Pearce is just not up to scratch for origin. Maybe he is 'not focussed', perhaps chasing Pussycat and Playboy Dolls around keeps his mind on other things to be focussed come Origin time. I just don't know with Pearce, he's got it but yet he doesn't at Origin time?

1. Hayne 2. Taufua/Mansour 3. Jennings 4. Morris 5. Morris 6. Maloney/Josh Reynolds 7. Adam Reynolds/Trent Hodkinson 8. Tolman 9. Farah 10. Tamou 11. Gallen 12. Merrin 13. Bird 14. Fifita 15. Watmough 16. Cordner 17. Fensom I agree with Josh about the fact that Hayne has a much greater impact from fullback rather than on the wing. He is compacted and held back on the wing whereas at fullback, he's able to use the space to really have an impact and be a serious X-Factor for New South Wales (something that both Dugan and Brett Stewart lack). For the wingers. Taufua has been in fine form for the games that he has played and would be hard to overlook, but you need to consider Josh Mansour who has been consistent for the entire season. Both man have been scoring plenty this year and both have looked threatening for their respective clubs. Brett Morris is the obvious choice. He has been one of the most consistent players for NSW over the past couple of years. Again the same must be said for Jennings and Josh Morris, who have played a fair amount of games together now in the centres and are playing consistently very well at origin level. At five eighth, there are two central options. James Maloney has been out of form this year, as has his club. The question you need to ask is can he step up for origin? He played magnificently well last year and it would be a big call to overlook him. The example that comes directly to my head is Michael Jennings, who went from Windsor Wolves to origin and played very well. Could Maloney do have a similar performance? If the answer is maybe, then the man who is nipping right at his heels is Josh Reynolds. Reynolds has played incredibly well for the Bulldogs this year, looking dangerous and being one of the most consistent performers in league. It would be a hard call to put him in iver Maloney, but one that may have to be made. At halfback, there are again 2 options. Pearce has held the jersey for far too long. His impact in recent origins has been minimal, and Maloney has been the standout half. So Pearce's time is definitely up. Who should his replacement be? The two options are Adam Reynolds and Trent Hodkinson. Reynolds has again been consistent this year and is definitely deserving of an overdue call up. He has the kicking game that Pearce lacks, and is consistent. Hodkinson is the other option. He had been playing incredibly well this year, and again has the kicking game that Pearce lacks. I believe that the contest is so close that the decision made should be based on the five eigth. If Josh Reynolds is chosen, Trent Hodkinson should be chosen based on the fact that they play with each other in club and know each other really well. If James Maloney is chosen, Adam Reynolds should be given his chance due to consistency and he is deserving. Farah and Tamou are relatively obvious choices. I started Tamou due to consistency and impact in origin matches previously. I'd start Tolman because he is an absolute workhorse and when he is tired, the impact that Fifita will have off the bench will be massive. Again, Gallen, Merrin and Bird are relatively obvious choices. I haven't chosen a utility on my bench as Bird can play in halfback and five eigth if needed. Fifita is starting on the bench because I believe that Tolman is enough of a workhorse to start and after about 30 minutes or so, having Fifita come off the bench will have a massive impact that will extremely beneficial. Watmough and Cordner are obvious choices and I have chosen Fensom at 17 because he has performed extraordinarily well this year and Hoffman has played poorly, whilst Woods performances at origin have been WELL below par. My team 1. Hayne 2. Tafua 3. Jennings 4. J. Morris 5. B. Morris 6. J. Reynolds 7. Hodkinson 8. Fifita 9. Farah 10. Tamou 11. Gallen 12. Merrin 13. Bird 14. Watmough 15. Cordner 16. Tolman 17. Hoffman/Woods/Fensom I think Hayne needs to be at fullback, enabling him to run anywhere around the park and becoming incredibly destructive in attack rather than being limited on the wing or at centre. Jorge Tafua has played a part in a large majority of manly's tries since his return and showed his strength in attack last season making him an obvious choice for selection. Both Josh Morris and Michael Jennings have had slow starts to the 2014 season, raising suggestions that NSW need new centres but I think that this is not the case. In previous years has this has, their form has been questionable, yet both always step up at origin. Jennings holds an X factor in attack and has the ability to score tries in 'dead' plays (much like game 1 last year) and Josh Morris has been the only player able to contain Greg Inglis in years and is a must have in my team. Brett Morris has been one of the best attacking wingers this year and again is an obvious selection and a brilliant example of his abilities include his miraculous try against the Sharks. NSW really need a change in halves. As I watched the game last year I believed that in game kicks were poor but the ability to create any opportunity was definitely missing from our halves. Josh Reynolds is a brilliant player both at club and representative level. Although his origin last year was nothing special, his abilities have matured over the off season. He has become more destructive in attack (fourth most try assists). Trent Hodkinson holds the key to what NSW need, a brilliant kicker. Hodkinsons in-game kicks this season have been astounding. He envelops the qualities of a brilliant halfback through his kicking game, his vision and his ability to effectively guide his team during tough points during the game. More importantly as a goal kicker, he has only missed three out of his thirty one goal kicks this season. Seeing as many games have previously won by one or two points, this factor is incredibly important. Fifita and Tamou both have had issues with their behaviour previously but are incredibly good forwards that NSW can't go without. Robbie Farah might not have a 'c' next to his name but is a massive leader for the blues and also is one of the squads best defenders. Missing Robbie would be detrimental to the squad as both Mick Ennis and peats can't fill the hole made if he wasn't in the squad. Merrin and Gallen are arguably the best forwards in the game. Merrin can play anywhere around the middle but I think alongside Gal will be perfect. Bird is a must have. He always shows up to every game with fire anger and hates every queenslander. He also is the reason I have not picked a utility as he has the ability to shift to five eighth if needed and Reynolds can play either fullback, centre, or on the wing if needed. Interchange Watmough, Cordner and Tolman have all played crucial roles in their sides forward pack so far this season and will all be brilliant coming off the bench. Hoffman, Woods and Fensom are all brilliant forwards and have different reasons for selection coming off the bench. Ryan Hoffman has the experience at origin level but hasn't had a good start to the season or proved himself as a crucial forward in previous series but his experience and maturity make him hard to be missed. Aaron Woods has had a near brilliant season so far but was well below par in both of his origin games last season which makes him a questionable choice. Sean Fensom is the star forward for the raiders and is proving to be best forwards in the game. He also lacks in maturity and experience at representative level being overlooked by players such as Adam Docker and Paul Vaughn in the upcoming city country game making him another risky selection but all players shouldn't be overlooked. I will be surprised to see how some players go this weekend which hopefully should finalise Laurie's decision along with my own.

Pearce has a premiership ring, something A. Reynolds can only dream about. Souths will never win a premiership with Reynolds at 7.This was clear when he choked V Manly in the preliminary final.Madge knows this and is why you will see Keary Sutton halves pairing at the pointy end of the season.

I feel for the whole Team. If you're not up to Rep Footy but you're put in there just for a sense of loyalty, this is no good for the entire NSW Team. Half backs are crucial to popping tricks out of no where, so the rest of the boys can capitalise on them and actually score. Pearce failed to do that last year and he ain't up to scratch this year. Move on, out with Pearce and in with Reynolds, at least Reynolds is earning his Blue's Jersery in his current form.

Myles Stedman, good on you for going with Adam Reynolds instead of Mitchell Pearce, not that Laurie Daley will take any notice of your choice to delete Pearce. One phone call from Pearce's Dad to his good friend Daley will ensure that. 'If' Mitch Pearce 'actually did something' to earn his spot, then yes, by all means, put him in there, but last year and this years Comp proves he really shouldn't be picked over Adam Reynolds. I'm tired of watching NSW loose because 'show pony Pearce' can't be a good enough to use the tricks that someone in his position most definitely should be able to do at this high intensity style Rugby League level. Out with Pearce and in with Reynolds I say.

Too many penalties with Ennis,Peats for me. Gotta feel for Pearce, they keep picking him,I don't think you can refuse to play if picked.Daley stuffed up last year by announcing way early who his halves were.
