The Roar's Queensland Maroons team for State of Origin I

By The Roar / Editor

The votes are in. Your voices have been heard. We have selected both the Queensland and New South Wales teams based on your selections from over the weekend.

We had 449 responses from those helping us pick the Maroons team, which is great, so thanks to all who contributed. It’s not quite the 800-plus we had for the New South Wales side, but still a great effort by all.

Did we stick with the men who’d done it all before? Or were Roarers more inclined to take risks and look to start developing some future Maroons?

Here are the 17 men you selected to front up for the Maroons at Suncorp Stadium in just over a week’s time.

1. Billy Slater
2. Darius Boyd
3. Greg Inglis
4. Justin Hodges
5. Brent Tate
6. Johnathan Thurston
7. Cooper Cronk
8. Matt Scott
9. Cameron Smith
10. Nate Myles
11. Matt Gillett
12. Ben Te’o
13. Corey Parker

14. Daly Cherry-Evans
15. Josh Papalii
16. Dave Taylor
17. Chris McQueen

With Sam Thaiday ruling himself out of Origin I contention over the weekend, unfortunately none of the votes to Slammin’ Sam counted in our poll. That means Matt Gillett gets his first Origin start in The Roar’s team, alongside hard-hitting Ben Te’o.

The rest of the side, bar the bench, was supremely predictable.

Daylight couldn’t challenge Corey Parker and Johnathan Thurston out of their starting spots for Queensland, while Roarers chose to stick solid with the backline that has served the Maroons so well for so many years.

Veterans Justin Hodges, Billy Slater and Brent Tate all remain in their jerseys, with Greg Inglis being chosen at centre.

Cooper Cronk was handed the seven jersey, with contender Daly Cherry-Evans getting just a few of those votes.

The bench, perhaps the biggest point of contention for this Maroons side, is chock full of wide-running backrowers, with Chris McQueen, Josh Papalii and David Taylor all sure to add some thrust. The concern would be the lack of a genuine front rower, though Taylor, Parker and Papalii could all fill in there as required.

See below for the full summary of the selection of our side, and stay tuned today as we bring you expert reaction to Queensland’s squad announcement.

Baltimore's defense is going to mudrer Orton. Denver can't run the ball and the line is not protecting him. That's a bad match-up for Denver. Also, I wish you guys would trash Simmons' Friday NFL columns. I know when you do that 100,000 Simmons fans somehow show up with their horrible senses of humor and leave comments like sounds like someone's jealous but you should still do it. He's out of control and gets worse all the time. People say that it's tired to do so, but now no one is properly skewering him. Boston fans found themselves battling Manny Ramirez flashbacks during our last few weeks with Moss, but the Freak is cagier than Ramirez ever was.

Milford? He was in one person's team. There were a couple of other randoms too, but only in obvious troll teams.

It's unfortunate Thaiday couldn't make it but I believe the team selected will deliver the 9th series.

I can't see Barba making Origin anytime soon, unless his form goes through the roof again. Anthony Milford won't help his chances either.

That's not too bad. Perhaps in a few years. Who was most unusual selection? Did Wally Lewis get a mention?

Who was the genius that picked "other" for fullback? I'd like to know who their selection was.

Daylight would be a certainty in the Blues team.

If a specialist front rower is picked on the bench I imagine it would be between Lawrence and Josh McGuire.

Unfortunately for Daylight he's always considered 2nd in any scenario.

Four people also voted for daylight at 5/8. Another conspiracy against QLD...

I think the weather has clouded your judgement on Daylight.

I saw that, and commented the same. That's got Hodges in the squad.

I'm still a fan of lawrence from the sea hawks (lol). Doesn't really get a mention yet should be in contention as good things were said after his emerging camp earlier in the year. A possible smoky on the bench?

I don't know if anyone's noticed but he seems to get outshone under lights. Always goes missing for the big night games.
