Brosque praises Postecoglou's World Cup efforts

Sydney FC marquee signing Alex Brosque has applauded Ange Postecoglou’s efforts at the World Cup despite the coach overlooking him for the tournament.

Brosque, who has spent the past three years overseas, won most of his 21 caps under Postecoglou’s predecessor, Holger Osieck.

He was a regular from 2011 to 2013, playing in many of the World Cup qualifiers.

However, he hasn’t played for the national team since Postecoglou took over in late 2013.

Now rejoining Sydney FC, for whom he holds the goals-coring record, Brosque is intent on making his mark in the A-League than worrying about further national representation.

“I never spoke to Ange when he took over,” Brosque said.

“But all credit to him – he’s done well with the boys.

“It’s been great to watch. The boys did fantastic.

“They will continue to kick on from this.

“From my point of view, I’m looking forward. Just coming back here and focusing only on Sydney and doing well here.”

While overseas, Brosque played for Shimizu S-Pulse in Japan and Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates.

“Ever since I left, it was always a matter of timing and exactly when was the right time to come home,” said Brosque, who won an A-League title with Sydney in 2009/10.

He said playing oversees taught him to be adaptable after playing as a central midfielder in Japan and upfront in the UAE.

“Coming back to the A-League, I know it’s gotten a lot quicker and the teams are playing much better football as well,” Brosque said.

“It’s about me adapting to that and hopefully I can do that quickly.”

He will be part of a new look strike force with Bernie Ibini and Shane Smeltz also joining and coach Graham Arnold still looking for one more forward.

“If I can help complement these guys and the team around us, hopefully that means we’ll have a good season,” Brosque said.

“This year is a little bit of a new era for the club, with a new coach and new signings.”
