2014 FIFA World Cup: Quarter final preview and tips

By Andrew Kennard / Roar Pro

After five games in the round of 16 went to extra time, I suspect we’ll have definitive results at the end of 90 minutes for most of the quarter final matches.

Regardless, predicting the quarters is set to be a tough prospect, as some of the heavyweights come up against each other.

I’ve tried to be quite specific as to how the games will be played out, with the exception of the Brazil Colombia game – this being the hardest game of all for me to make a call on.

France versus Germany
No team in history can claim anywhere near the level of consistency the German team has displayed. The Germans are looking at their 13th semi-final appearance, more than any other nation.

I predict the game to start well, with the French attacking nicely, only to be repulsed by the stereotypically efficient and stoic German defence.

A slight lapse from the French will allow a counter for Germany to win 1-0.

It could easily go to penalties but I’m confident Germany will win.

Brazil versus Colombia
The home nation has had a rough time of it in recent World Cups – not winning the last two, in a row no less, is surely considered an unmitigated failure. That said, this World Cup they went in as favourites but have struggled to find form and scraped through in several games.

Colombia have been amazing and are my team of the tournament – how inspiring is James Rodriguez! In a sheer act of personal vengeance against me, I predict the footballing gods to lift Brazil to play like the champions they are and put together an amazing performance to win.

I hope both teams play a flowing attacking game and not worry all that much about conceding. If this does happen, it could easily be a game remembered for many years to come.

Not game enough to predict a score as I’m still hoping for a Colombia to get up, but defying logic and form, Brazil to win.

Argentina versus Belgium
The Swiss played two defenders on Lionel Messi, which left them short elsewhere on the field, and he still managed to find a pass to lead to a goal for a teammate. His presence will create all sorts of problems for the Flemish, who don’t have enough composure to deal with him.

I don’t see enough pace and danger up front for the Flemish to trouble the Argentine defence so I’m predicting a 2-0 result to the Argentina. Messi to get a goal and an assist.

The Netherlands versus Costa Rica
Costa Rica, as the lowest ranked team in the eight, should be dispatched easily. The Dutch will need to be extra vigilant from the start lest they concede early, but will be able to control the match after they find their feet.

They improved as the game went on against the Mexicans and the balance of the game will be with the Ducth. This dominance will, ironically, keep Costa Rica in the game as it simplifies their game plan – park the bus.

About the hour mark, the weight of possession will open the floodgates and a flurry of goals at the end will see the Dutch prevail 3-1.

I will post again before the semis to see how these predictions hold up and we can have a good laugh at what (if anything) I get wrong. Tell me now if you are that confident.

Bear in mind, I am no octopus.

My apologies to the people of Belgium, please replace Flemish with the Belgium national team.

Agree hoops. France will score. I actually think they could pull it off. The Germans have done a lotta miles this tournament, and by all reports a half dozen of them are poorly. Which half dozen remains to be seen. This quarter is wide open for mine. As are all but the Nederlands v Costa Rica game. Oranje should clean that up. Brazil should get through, just. And the Belgians have a proper shout. I think they'll do the Argies. In something of a boilover.

My thoughts exactly HardcorePrawn. There are many Walloons within the Belgian team and they would be insulted by such comments. BTW Germany 1 - France 0 - no way that France won't score. The Germans may win but the scoreline will be 3-2.

Flemish? There are quite a few Walloons in that Belgian squad too.
