Ronaldo: Cahill's goal the best of the World Cup

By News / Wire

Tim Cahill’s spectacular volley for Australia against the Netherlands is the goal of the World Cup so far, Brazilian legend Ronaldo says.

While many critics have picked James Rodriguez’s sublime chest and volley for Colombia against Uruguay as the goal of the tournament, Ronaldo said he preferred the Australian striker’s spectacular effort.

“It was the best goal of the World Cup and it’s going to go down in history as one of the most beautiful World Cup goals,” Ronaldo said at a FIFA press conference.

Cahill’s wonder-strike occurred during Australia’s 3-2 defeat to the Dutch in Group B on June 18.

Latching onto a long ball, Cahill volleyed an unstoppable first time shot which flew in off the underside of the cross bar.

no, facts are not biased but sometimes their presentation is biased as you have alluded to, but the facts themselves are not.

I think that's because with a header you need to manage pressure and placement, with a voley you need to measure pressure, placement and add spin.

And all facts are biased too...in their selection and omission of other facts :)

@vinnie Which skill have you found more difficult during your playing days? a) volleying a dropping ball, with the non-preferred foot? b) cushioning the dropping ball & then volleying with your preferred foot?

too many biased opinions here, i guess if cahill's goal was scored the way james goal and vice versa we would still be saying timmys goal were better. further that i know Ronaldo has a grudge with Colombia's players after they took Neymar out

Need to put things into context. The Dutch are still in the tournament who we probably should have beaten and we more than held our own against Chile who was a whisker away from knocking out Brazil.

Yeah agreed fussball. Heading it rather than volleying in that situation is a bit easier IMO.

Haha good question. I actually think I'd at least connect with the ball a lot more often with my head than my foot in that situation, but the accuracy and weighting he put on it was incredible. Perhaps I need to revise my top three slightly, but, it's almost impossible to pick out three in this WC isn't it?

@AZ_RBB From personal experience, I say heading a dropping ball is an easier technique than volleying. I've no idea why - a human movement expert would need to explain - but, from experience & observation, volleying a dropping ball & controlling its direction is an incredibly difficult technique for human beings. Having said that, RVP's header was a beauty. But, as a former full-back, I'd like the cross from Daley Blind to get as much credit as RVP's header.

Spot on Dave - beautifully put. Anyone who has played the game would know that volleying a dropping ball that's coming from over your shoulder (with the sun in your eyes), with the non-preferred foot is much more difficult than cushioning the ball with the chest, which regulates the drop, then volleying with your preferred foot. That's why I listen to Ronaldo. He understands the technique, the timing, the pressure required by Cahill & James; and Ronaldo thinks Cahill's goal is better.

How would you go with RVP's header?

Cahill takes the cake for me. Just going off my own skills, I reckon if I tried to do an imitation of James' volley I could at least connect with the ball and kick it in the general direction of the goal (without the power or accuracy) maybe 6 or 7 times out of 10. If I tried to volley a 40m pass coming over my shoulder on my weaker foot, I reckon I couldn't even connect (let alone get the power and accuracy), more than a few times out of 100 attempts. I'm also surprised James' other goal against Japan isn't getting much mention, where he turned the defender inside out and arrogantly chipped the keeper. For me that's my top three. Cahill, James, James.

I really don't get this whole 'fluke' argument. Is there any doubt that Cahill was attempting to volley the ball into the goal? No? So the argument is that it had such a high degree of difficulty that he couldn't repeat it? Doesn't that automatically make it great? HE DID IT. He pulled it off.
