Ranking the NRL's fullbacks: Part 1

By James Preston / Roar Guru

With so much conjecture about the contest between Jarryd Hayne, Greg Inglis and incumbent Billy Slater about who should wear the green and gold number one at season’s end, it is a perfect time to assess the credentials of the NRL’s fullbacks of 2014.

I will be looking at 2014 form, however consideration will be made for injured players, such as James Tedesco. They will be judged on their performances this season so their ranking will be hampered.

As I complied this list I quickly realised I could not find a single poor player, so here is what I came up with.

16. William Zillman (Titans)
At the start of the season the Titans led the comp after nine rounds, with David Mead, who was deputising for the injured Zillman, shining at fullback and earning a Country Origin jersey along the way.

Unfortunately for Zillman he is not even the best fullback at his own club and often lacks the necessary spark of his peers in the position.

15. Michael Gordon (Sharks)
The former NSW representative has had a quiet season for the Sharks, with his biggest influence coming via goal-kicking duties.

He seems to be lacking in both pace and punch in 2014 and perhaps a stint in the centres or wing would benefit ‘Flash’, and help him return to the form that saw the Sharks offer him a lucrative contract.

The talented Nathan Gardner is waiting in the wings.

14. Ben Barba (Broncos)
Since the pre-season 2013 disruption Barba has looked a shadow of the player that won the 2012 Dally M medal for player of the season.

He has provided minimal influence in ways of tries and try assists, and his defence has at times left a lot to be desired. However, he has shown the odd glimpse of brilliance in 2014.

13. Sam Perrett/Mitch Brown (Bulldogs)
Both players have spent equal time in the Dogs’ number one this season, with both doing an extremely solid job. Perrett and Brown offer very similar services at the back with good handling, solid kick returns and defence.

Their ball-playing abilities do leave a bit to be desired though, however neither have been known to be specialist fullbacks in the past.

12. Michael Morgan (Cowboys)
Another converted fullback comes in at number 12 on the list. Morgan has had a great season for the Cowboys, filling in for their 2014 marquee purchase Lachlan Coote, who suffered a season-ending injury in the Auckland nines.

He has improved under the high ball as the season has progressed and has found an extra gear of pace playing at the back. His time in the halves has served him well as he often joins into the attack with a deft touch of the ball.

11. Darius Boyd (Knights)
Boyd had an extremely slow start to the season that would have seen him placed much lower on this list, however, since the Origin period kicked in Boyd’s form has received a much needed shot in the arm.

He has been excellent the past month and seems to be combining well with the Knights’ new halves pairing.

10. James Tedesco (Tigers)
The unlucky Tigers fullback has been ruled out for the season, but not before drawing comparisons to Billy Slater and being mentioned as a NSW bolter.

His lightning pace and ability to offer ball playing have excited Tigers and NRL fans alike, he would have ranked much higher had injury not restricted him to just eight games this season.

9. Josh Dugan/Adam Quinlan (Dragons)
Dugan was playing fantastic football before his shift to the centres (which has seen his excellent form continue), but with Dylan Farrell’s return imminent Dugan will revert to fullback.

But Quinlan has been exceptional and is a different style of player to Dugan. He’s less aggressive and physical but substitutes this with exceptional pace, a great slight of hand and a knack of finding gaps.

Combined, the two have done a great job for the Dragons in 2014.

What do you think Roarers? Do you agree with the list so far? Are some of these fullbacks unlucky not to make the top eight fullbacks of 2014? Make sure to check out the top eight fullbacks on Tuesday!

I would take a fit and healthy Stewart over any of the others not only a top notch defensive fullback but one of if not the best attacking one not just how many he scores but how many he sets up so under rated its a joke and some of the things people say about his court case when they obviously have no idea about the facts of the case is disgraceful but his injures cruelled his career as well at the worst possible time for him but he is still one of the most entertaining players to watch and most skilful personally I think he's great

How positive are you that that is an official figure and not a ball park sum, to my knowledge he is on around 600k a season, which yes I would pay for.

@thethirdeye Minichiello has been bundled with Roger Tuivasa Sheck as the Roosters employ a dual fullback system, namely Mini in defence RTS in attack. Resultantly I have judged them as serving these roles, Mini has been terrific defensively this season and RTS exciting in attack, viewing it this way does this change your opinion on the matter?

Have you forgotten Brett Stuart, what's the issue, he beats most of those mentioned.

I wouldn't swap Mini for the world because i love him however if he were to retire and i HAD to choose i would go GI but he would have to go into quarantine after being with Souths then Hayne and maybe Billy the kid or Stewart.Actaully i would go Stewart ahead of Slater as Slater won't put his body on the line anymore and he may need contacts as he keeps dropping bombs.

If Minichiello is not somewhere between 13 and 16, which he isn't, then this list loses all credibility in my opinion.

You better hope the coach has forgiven Quinlan,James for throwing the ball over the sideline last game whilst fielding a kick on the zero tackle with the game on the line..yes he scored a nice try,but that was horrendous and very very worrying.

James, Would you pay $1M per season to have him in your side? A far more astute judge than me noted that his defence stats were expensive. I am pleased that GI turned his life around but his best football is behind him.

Just in relation to Dugan you will notice I've listed him as duo with Quinlan, I'm not considering his performances in the centre's even though he has been excellent but Quinlan has been very solid since deputising there. To do that would be the equivalent of stating that Reece Robinson...arguably not this season, but in general, is a FAR better player when playing at fullback then on the wing or in the centre's, I can only judge on and their performances completed at fullback :)

Gee that's rough, he hasn't been as good as last season but I certainly wouldn't say he's been bad. Souths are a completely different outfit with him in the side

Poor Rusty, Poor Souths, GI would earn >$500 per actual PLAYING MINUTE. He is becoming a 'GUNNA'. When is he gunna produce? Is GI partly to blame for Sam wanting to play Union? Sam seems to contribute five times the effort of GI.

If I was Madge - I would drop him - see how long he earns $1mill a season playing NYC.

Based on what Inglis has achieved over the past 12 months compared to how he was playing before he was injured during Origin last year, I would put him just slightly ahead of Ben Barba.

I agree, I have tried to judge it purely based on 2014 form but I think subconsciously there may have been a bit of that "but he's better" overall mentality.

I think its a fair measure of who the outstanding player of that particular year is when you consider its based on a weekly points system for all 26 rounds of NRL. Even so, when you also consider Hayne is in the top 20 players for tries scored/try assists/ linebreaks/line break assists on top of his DallyM lead & outstanding Origin series, then he is the standout fullback of 2014 IMO.

He leads dally M for fullbacks but does anyone take the dally ms seriously for deciding who the best player is?

This could take a while to get through all the positions if we are doing Part 1 Part 2 on each position over 2 days a piece :)
