Cheap Seats episode 47: Richie McCaw's moment

By The Cheap Seats Podcast / Roar Guru

Sportswriters Brett McKay and Ryan O’Connell get on the shameless self-promotion bandwagon in Episode 47 of the Cheap Seats podcast.

In this episode, Ryan is remarkably even-handed after the Waratahs’ triumph (given his semi-final form), while Brett utters a naughty word about the Canberra Raiders.

Episode 47 talking points:
– #AskTheCheapSeats: the aforementioned Raiders concerns, and Craig Joubert gets the hint;
– Rugby: the Waratahs win their maiden Super Rugby title in the best final in some time, and what this means for NSW and Australian rugby;
– NRL: teams getting thumped, Bennett’s curious sledge, Potter won’t quit, and Canterbury lose their way;
– AFL: Sydney beat Essendon but footy was the loser, West Coast/Gold Coast/Collingwood going OK again, but wobbles for Adelaide and Port;
– The curious decision about the Big Bash League final, and Australia’s ODI tour to Zimbabwe
– Indiana Pacers star Paul George’s horrific leg injury gets Ryan all squirmy;
– Brett’s tweet of the week and Ryan’s bricks-and-mortar certainty for the coming weekend.

Putting aside all the political politeness after the fact, after watching the game again tonight, I cannot see how Joubert didn't send one of the Crusaders to the bin let alone give them a warning in the first 15 minutes with 4 cynical fowls within the Warathas attacking zone. I am also still puzzled as to how the video ref awarded the second try to the Crusaders when his foot was clearly touching the line.

And presumably that decision should go to the same TMO that ruled on Nadolo's try?

Reminds me of the classic of a batsman saying to an umpire he didn't hit the ball for a catch behind and the umpire replying "If you look in the papers tomorrow, I think you'll find you did".

I just sat down and watched it again, I hadnt realised that it was a bad decision but such is life. Goodness knows we have had our fair share go against us. Which reminds me of a conversation i had with my grandfather one day watching a cricket match sometime back in the late seventies. Pop was an old Geordie who still kept a soft spot for the English cricket team, I was upset that the umpire had given one of the Aussies out (when clearly he wasn't in my mind). Pop turned to me and asked 'What did the umpire say?' I looked at him and said 'out of course' 'Well then' said Pop 'He must be out.' That was the end of the conversation

Enjoyed that boys. It's always bloody good - I should listen more often. (Should have opened with the Tahs though! And finished with the Tahs. And probably stuck to the Tahs around the middle. Although it's always fun putting the boot in Ricky Stuart!)

Aw Jokerman, if must be tough, eh? Try it from the other side for a decade. Some Bledisloe history that you may have forgotten.- Richie's early break from the scrum that led to a try, that should've been a penalty to us, not a try to you. Reid's über cynical offside on the try line that didn't lead to a sin bin. Richie has lived by the sword and mostly won by the sword. When he cops the sword, he cops the sword. I know this is a dangerous line to take the thread into, but seriously bro, are you looking for sympathy on an Aussie site? For your the difficulty you are having accepting a loss? The best team in the comp won. Sorry that it happened to be one based in Australia. But we'll all just have to live with that.

not if particular tmo's or refs are only waiting for the ones at the end...but then I'm not one to take the hard ref line and it serves nothing here.

PeterK it wouldn't surprise me if your mind just numbed the sound out, or it happened on your deaf ear.

I've always like that idea OJ due to controversial decisions like that. Each team gets one or two reviews, a bit like tennis. Maybe if you get one correct at review you get a second if you choose, to keep it tactical and only sent to review when it looks like it will pay. I don't think it would slow the game up, just add another tactical edge to the game. Imagine if McCaw had that option at the end of the game, or if he had already used his one or two reviews up...

I had seen that, and it is funny. I'd just assumed they were Magner's stickers on champers bottles, but no no, that clearly isn't champers!

It's why I said 'suggested' Peter. Just as you've said you didn't hear anything, others have said they did hear Walsh making the call. I can't take any word over another, but the suggestion is out there. And frankly, it doesn't matter either way. As we said in the podcast, Joubert saw something that looked like an infringement and ruled on it..

I don't think it is reasonable UNLESS every single penalty goes to the tmo as well not just at the death.

It was a tough call, Brett. I have never been more gutted from a super game. It almost felt like losing a RWC final! Perhaps its because the All Blacks always win and here was a loss and it had been a while. But it was the manner in how they lost. When NSW were running away with it, I though so be it..they deserve the win and I can handle that. But a penalty at the death, against McCaw and then a few commentators rubbing it in. That was sore. And it makes you wonder. Who decided that result? Walsh, Joubert...? The game shouldn't be decided on that.

I was at the game with sports ears on and did not hear anything from either touchie on that call. Has that been verified or is it just another conspiracy theory or people being mischievous.

Yeah, it's a reasonable thought, OJ. Even if they dressed it up as 'suspected foul play'. It's been suggested that Steve Walsh made the call from the sideline on that decision, too, which only adds to the argument from those on the wrong end of it. Not sure how Walsh's view would've been any clearer than Joubert's in the middle..

Regarding McCaw's moment, I don't see why they send every try to the TMO and can't refer a match deciding penalty. Well, I do see why they do it, but it's a pity.
