The Titans need a new poster boy

By Sam Williams / Roar Rookie

As a die-hard Gold Coast Titans fan it is painful to watch the team you love continue to fall.

While coaching issues will be sorted out, the fans or, in this case the lack of fans at games, is a worry.

I personally think the Titans need to invest in a player who can become the face of the club for years to come. I would pick Aidan Sezer as he the best up and coming halfback at the Titans.

He’s young and of Indigenous decent which is a big bonus for Preston Campbell’s former club and one that was so integral in the establishment of the Indigenous All Stars. The Titans should aim all their marketing around Aidan, make it so every 10 year-old on the Gold Coast grows up telling their parents they want to be just like Aidan Sezer.

Every other club you can think of in Australia has a poster-boy their marketing is based around and that young children aspire to be like.
• Sydney Roosters – Sonny Bill Williams
• South Sydney Rabbitohs – Greg Inglis
• Melbourne Storm – Billy Slater
• North Queensland Cowboys – Johnathan Thurston
• Manly Sea-Eagles– Daly Cherry-Evans
• New Zealand Warriors – Shaun Johnson
• Parramatta Eels – Jarryd Hayne

The same can be said for the AFL as well, almost every club has at least one player who is the centre of the club. On the Gold Coast, every young kid will eventually know the name Gary Ablett and they will grow up saying I want to be just like Gary Ablett, while the Titans don’t have anyone like that.

I also believe the Titans need to have an image that they stand by. At the moment I believe it is “we give up”. They should be aiming for an 18th man, idea taken from the Seattle Seahawks 12th man motto or something along those lines that they can market across the holiday strip.

The Titans need to encourage home attendance because the atmosphere at the game is unbelievable. The atmosphere was amazing the last time I witnessed a crowd at Robina which was greater than 23,000 fans.

I believe the Titans can use this as a fresh start, now that Michael Searle and John Cartwright have parted ways, to allow for a new side to be formed. This would be the perfect time to get fans interested in the club again.

maybe...but what if the fullback the Broncos offload is Ben Barba? I wouldn't want him.

Yes not sure how Albert Kelly isn't promoted as the face of the Titans. He is an exciting player and seems to have gotten over certain off field issues that plagued his past. Titans have struggled to get 13 men on the field this year through injuries. I wouldn't be surprised if we seem them in the 8 next year.

Get a coach who can get the best out of Albert Kelly and James Roberts. Both are talented.

Problem with Aiden Sezer being the face of any club is his ego is so huge. The guy has talent, but he already thinks he is great, and that is his downfall. Albert Kelly is way more exciting anyway, and that's who I would make the face of the club, or just let a style of play talk for itself. Choose you captain and away you go.

Bailey, Minichello and Douglas are 50 years old, Bird is only a bit younger. Whatever happened to Ryan James?

The Titans need a fullback. I thought Darius might go there but if he goes to Brisbane, the Titans should try and pick up whichever fullback the Broncos get rid of.

DCE is no way going to the titans. Can't buy high profile players when you're in big debt. Titans have their poster boy - James Roberts. He's a massive talent, and if titans can get Albert Kelly of the booze, they can help this kid reach his potential to be a superstar of the game.

How do titans fans feel about Searle 'stepping aside'..considering he still owes 40%?? Will this be enough to appease the fans??

Fans like winners off and on the field.Having an outstanding star who can be a promotional asset,is not always available to clubs,so they have to excel at the first two attributes. The team has been playing like lost sheep, and the offfield dramas relating to Titans 4 Tomorrow don't help. That being said I'd be pushing for a Folau in 2016 ,or a DCE or even a Hoffman. for 2015. The front office situation needs to be well sorted out, uncertainty does not help one iota.

The titans now have a complete squad in my opinion. Ever since they have been in the comp they have lacked a quality centre which they now have in james roberts. If the titans have there best 17 on the park and are coached properly they should be able to beat any one. With a forward pack including nate myles, greg bird, luke bailey mark minichello, luke douglas and dave taylor they have one of the best in the comp. There halves when fit, kelly and seizer compliment each other perfect and plenty of speed outwide with mead, gordon, roberts and zillman who is dynamic when fit. Although they have injuries this squad should be doing better than what they are IMO. Maybe a new coach is what they need

The Titans should , and will, throw everything bar the kitchen sink at DCE....and with no Griffin at the Broncos, they might stand a chance.
