Dear Wayne, heard you're coming back to the Broncos

By Jay C / Roar Guru

First off, Welcome home. It is good to see you back where you belong. How was your adventure? We missed you. It hasn’t quite been the same without you.

Us? Oh, we’ve been ok. We nearly made the grand final in 2011. Oh but for the knee of Gerard Beale, what might have been. Since then things have been pretty quiet up here. A bit of kerfuffle about the salary cap, but I guess that’s what happens when the foals are let loose to run the place.

Now that you’re back though, I just have a few questions I would like to ask.

Not to be rude, but, why are you back? I know you must miss your family, and Brissy is a top place. But what are your intentions with us? I really want to know.

See, some people are saying you just want the pay cheque, and that it will be easy money ’til you retire in three years. However, I feel like it might be more than that. I wonder if it’s that maybe you have seen the club you helped build into the most powerful force in Australian sports, adrift in a fog of mediocrity.

I’m sure that it has been a tough year in Newcastle, with some at the club calling for your blood. But how quickly they forget last year’s surge to the penultimate round. And with a team bereft of superstars.

And St George are just jelly that you love us more. How could you not? We are the chosen people here in the sunshine state.

Did you hear we won Origin for eight years in a row? They got it this year but they kind of cheated, maybe. Did you see that second game? I’m pretty sure the refs thought we were back in the old five-metre days.

I’m also going to mention Josh Reynolds being terrible because that seems to be all anyone is talking about at the moment.

So here’s what’s going on with the team.

Josh ‘The Hoff’ Hoffman is back at fullback and loving it. Dan Vidot is going pretty good too. Dale Copley is tearing it up, Martin Kennedy is tearing his calf and a few are even tearing up at the loss of Antony Griffin.

Justin Hodges is injured. Ha, what a shock. In other news, Black Caviar wins and the South Pole is cold.

Ben Hunt has come of age, or has he? It’s a bit hard to tell. Maybe. Josh McGuire is going alright, like, starting front row alright.

Andrew McCullough was going good. But we’ve lost Jake Granville. That guy can move. Corey Parker is a gun. In fact if the army could work out how to weaponise him we’d be a step closer to world domination.

Todd Lowrie keeps getting named but I look and look and I can’t see him anywhere. I think they should nickname him bigfoot. Sam Thaiday was never really the captain if we are all being honest.

Ben Barba, of Dally M-winning fame, isn’t quite as bad at five-eighth as he was at fullback.

Anthony Milford is coming next year, which is good because we only have like three other fullbacks. So you should bring Darius Boyd along. If you can, get Greg Inglis to come too – and make him play just inside Darius.

Anyway I feel like everyone is busting a gut, we just need a bit of direction. Griffin is apparently a nice guy, but you can see him making apprentice moves and we just can’t afford the three years until he is a top-eight coach.

So welcome back, but please don’t play with our hearts. We really want to win another premiership. It has been almost a decade – that is like forty horse years, Wayne.

Regards, A Hopeful Fan

In some of the games he played, Hala looked to run through the line which is not something that other players do.

How would you know? Griffin has no idea how to use a bench. I'm sorry, and if he is a lovely guy, that's great. But he is not up to standard as a coach. Persisting with Hoffman at 5/8 showed that. Using Parker as a battering ram showed that. Putting his personal feelings ahead of the team and dropping Hannant showed that. Barba at full back. Maranta's continued selection. Todd Lowrie. Martin Kennedy. Ben Barba. Using Thaiday as a battering ram. Jarrod Wallace not getting picked more often. These are all poor decsions.

Imho, Parker shouldnt be playing prop, the Broncos need a " bigger body " who is still mobile in the middle. The really good sides seem to show the Broncos lack of size in the middle in the first 20 or so. David Hala has promise, however he seems to be injured and cant establish himself at the top. The Broncos have a fleet of Pocket Battleships; not a few big Carriers surrounded by Destroyers I understand the game is now faster, but i cant help but think if the Broncos had a few really big , fit ,intimidating ogres they would be even better.

Because they have 4 very good middle forwards in parker, thaiday, mcguire and hannant and they are all big minute players So it is more beneficial for the team to get more out of each player by rotating them. Parker is obviously capable of playing 80 mins but they obviously want to try and get more out of him in shorter spells. But his role when on the field has not changed one bit. And he is in career best form so it must be working. There is no difference between lock and prop these days that is just an outdated opinion.

It all might look good on paper but something inside me says this is all just feels wrong for the Broncos. I think Griffin was certainly building something and i think that maybe that momentum has been stifled. Corey Parker shouldnt be playing Prop though

90% of the polynesians dont have the ticker to make it. You see 100's come through the juniors in sydney, brisbane and from overseas that are built like NRL players by the time there 16 and calve up all through juniors but most dont make it any further because they dont want to do the hard work required.

Thanks guys. I wrote a couple of sad sack stories so I figured I might lighten the mood a bit. I agree about Boyd. Cut Barba and put Liford at 5/8. Use the money on some front row muscle. Although I hear good things about Mitch Garbutt.

Ive got no problems with Wayne coming back, but why are the Boncos trying to find 1,000,000 in their salary cap to accommodate Darius Boyd?? Surely there must be some young gun running around in the QLD league that they could sign up?? This is just lazy recruiting. They dont need another full back anyway, what they need is some big Auckland forwards. REally, they want a couple of 19-20 year old behemoth Maoris that that they can develop long term. Good backs are a dime a dozen in QLD... what they lack are the big men. The other bonus with having a few Kiwis is you dont lose them during the state of origin camp. I believe Ma'a Nonu was once courted by the Eels.. imagine the havoc he wold have wreaked in the NRL?? Head east recruiters, head east. ;-)

Brilliant article mate, look forward to reading more. As for Uncle Benny, well it just doesn't feel right watching him coach a team that isn't the Broncs. Here's hoping he returns the Broncos to their best, although given the game last week it's not far off...
