[VIDEO] Gold Coast Suns vs West Coast Eagles: AFL highlights, scores, blog

By Jayme Markus / Roar Guru

The Gold Coast Suns host the West Coast Eagles in a fight for the right to play finals football. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 1:10pm (AEST).

The weekend’s results did not go the Eagles way. Their superior percentage had them in the box seat to keep their season alive, that was if Richmond lost to Sydney.

Richmond’s impressive 3-point win means that neither of these sides are in the hunt for September, but that should not detract from the fact that it was built up as a crucial game and should still deliver a quality contest.

It was a thriller the last time these two teams met at Patersons Stadium in Round 13, with the Eagles just holding on to win 103 to 100.

Gold Coast has nothing to lose in this one and will want to end the season on a high in front of their home crowd.

The Eagles will be hoping the stuttering steps of Josh Kennedy can once again dominate the Suns backline after kicking seven in their previous clash.

A player who looks every bit the young Josh Kennedy is Tom Lynch, who is having a breakout year in front of the sticks for the Suns.

The Suns midfield has found their groove after spluttering when Gary Ablett went down.

Matt Priddis has been receiving hype to don his first All-Australian Guernsey after his excellent year. Andrew Gaff has flown under the radar but the silky midfielder has been vital to the West Coast midfield this year with his run and class.

Scott Selwood could make a surprise return from an ankle injury along with Nic Naitanui, who was a late withdrawal last week.

Prediction
The Eagles’ would have been shattered by Richmond’s win against Sydney, however I think they will still have the drive to show their class against the Suns today.

Eagles by 20 points.

The West Coast Eagles have defeated the Gold Coast Suns by 52 points in a shootout. Both teams looked to score heavily in the sunny and breezeless conditions at Metricon Stadium which was perfect for attacking football. The game was closely contested for the first half with constant momentum swings resulting in the Eagles leading by only 2 points at the main break. However the Eagles blew the game open in the third term kicking 11 goals to 2 and maintaining their lead for the remainder of the match. Josh Kennedy continued his trend of monstering the Suns backline, finishing the game with 8 goals in a dominate performance. Although he will have a nervous wait this week after being reported for striking David Swallow in a marking contest and breaking his nose. Nic Naitanui and Scott Lycett bullied the Suns in the middle who did not have a recognized ruckman playing. For the Suns Michael Rischitelli fought manfully in the middle for the Suns gathering 34 possessions, although it is the performance of Jack Martin who will have the Suns supporters excited for next season. Martin oozed talent all day and finished 4 goals from his 19 possessions in what was his best game of his young career. My Best: 3 – Josh Kennedy , 12 possessions, 7 marks, 8 goals 2 – Mark LeCras, 19 possessions, 5 clearances, 5 inside 50’s, 4 goals 1 – Jack Martin, 19 possessions, 7 marks, 4 inside 50’s, 4 goals

I think you could be right, I know the first quarter was the highest aggregate first quarter score this year. Not a lot of defense played today.

Well there was 13 goals kicked in that quarter but 11 of them were by the Eagles. As a result they blew the game open and are sitting pretty for a win to finish their season. Kennedy was dominant and now has 7 goals for the match, 7 more in the last quarter and he takes home the Johnny Coleman. Naitanui was very influential winning taps and clearances at will with no Suns player big enough to stop him. Josh Kennedy has been reported for his hit on Swallow and looks in like he may miss a game or two to start the 2015 season.
