A-league players that could survive in the EPL

By adam / Roar Rookie

A few weeks ago I was having an argument with my friend about which A-League players could compete in the EPL.

We talked for hours and hours over who could make the big step up to one of the best leagues in the world, and we came up with these possibilities.

1. Eugene Galekovic – Adelaide United
The shot-stopper is one of the best in the competition and certainly has enough experience to make the transition. The only disadvantage for Galekovic is his age. At 33, not many clubs would want an Australian keeper near the end of his career with no European experience. Could possibly cement a spot in a lower team.

2. Marcelo Carrusca – Adelaide United
The Argentinian playmaker could certainly play at the top level. He already has a small amount of European football under his belt playing 15 times for Turkish club Galatasaray between 2006 and 2009. But at 30 he is probably getting to the end of his peak, although he did have a standout year last year.

3. Thomas Broich – Brisbane Roar
Broich is the best player in the competition. The German mastermind has a ton of experience at the top level playing with Bundesliga clubs like Borussia Moenchengladbach, FC Köln and FC Nuernberg. He also possesses the ability to play as a midfielder or at left wing. Like many on this list, age is a disadvantage, with Broich turning 34 in January. But I still believe even though he might not have the pace anymore, he still has enough natural ability to allow him to play in the EPL.

4.Luke Brattan – Brisbane Roar
Brattan is an interesting case. He might not be able to play in the Premier League just yet, but he could in the future. Still only 24, Brattan is an extremely talented player that will only get better. Inexperienced at European and national level, it would take time to adapt but I think he could become an EPL player.

5. Matthieu Delpierre – Melbourne Victory
The new Frenchman has won the Bundesliga but has never stepped foot in the EPL. At 33 he is certainly not at his best, but he could still do the job in the Premier League. The strong defender will be hoping for a big year as Victory have made a number of big signings.

6. Mark Milligan – Melbourne Victory
The Socceroos midfielder was wanted by Crystal Palace last year but Victory said he was too valuable to their team and that Palace were not offering enough money. His strong defending and excellent passing range are key factors of his game, and at 29 he still has a lot to offer. Milligan has no experience of European football but has played at the World Cup and for Chinese and Japanese clubs.

7. Robert Koren – Melbourne City
The Slovenian midfielder has played in the EPL and Championship for the last seven years and there is no reason why he couldn’t do it again this year. At 33 years old, age again is a disadvantage but he showed last year that he can still perform in the top leagues while captaining Hull City.

8. Damien Duff – Melbourne City
Question marks will be raised over Duff, but although he wasn’t brilliant for Fulham last season he still played 18 times in all competitions. At 35, he is far from his Chelsea days but can still be special on his day. It will be a pleasure to see him on Australian soil this year. His incredible career has included stints at Blackburn, Chelsea, Newcastle and most recently Fulham, scoring a total of 55 goals in 393 games of EPL action.

9. David Villa – Melbourne City
The Spanish star may only be here for 10 games, but it will be 10 games of magic. The 32-year-old is highly rated around the world and could walk into most EPL teams at the moment. Villa has scored an amazing 248 La Liga goals and 59 goals for Spain. In the last year, he won La Liga, played in the Champions League and the World Cup and scored 15 goals in the process. It will be a pleasure to see him play.

10. Marc Janko – Sydney FC
Sydney have received a lot of criticism after signing Janko as their marquee, but if you look deep enough you find out that it is a quality signing. The 31-year-old currently captains the Australian national team, and has played for top clubs such as Porto, FC Twente and Red Bull Salzburg. The six foot five striker could compete in most lower teams in the EPL with his heading ability and strength.

11. Matthew Spiranovic – Western Sydney Wanderers
Spiranovic is the best Australian defender not only the A-League, but the whole world. Was excellent all last season and at the World Cup for the Socceroos. He had multiple EPL clubs scouting him after Brazil and at 26 the six foot four defender still has a lot of football ahead of him. Suffered an ankle injury not long ago but it should be interesting to see how he goes this season as there are a lot of EPL clubs looking for cheap defenders.

Honourable mentions: Isaias, Matt Smith, Matt McKay, Besart Berisha, Marcos Flores, Tomi Juric, Alejandro Rodriguez Gorrin, Roly Bonevacia and Albert Riera.

Who cares!!!! - A-League best quality is that its a lot MORE competitive than the EPL (or almost any other soccer league), where only a 3-maybe 4 teams can be champions in the EPL.. The even money means an even comp , only the MLS and the A-League have this .. That why they have managed to survive in very hostile media markets... -A-League has the best quality athletes of any of the 4 codes in Oz( check the numbers its miles ahead) - This competitive edge has seen the team punch way above their weight in the ACL, against teams worth $$ more...more often than lower teams do in other comp in Europe - People in football are openly saying that players who play in these league get something special in terms of competitiveness over and about their skills - Then if they go all the way to the top leagues they have an extra weapon, look at or A-league player in the world cup

I'm sure that if he had gone to Leicester and done well - although his scoring record in Turkey was awful - he would have stayed there don't you? It's not like they were in for him after they got promoted, he was just seen as a player who was a short-term loan deal to boost squad-depth as they looked for promotion.

"um,noone thought greenacre was antyhing special." No, but the fact that he got 80-odd games in the A-League tells you a lot. And you also ignored my points about Shane Smeltz and Paul Ifill. Also, Jardel was well past his best by then. In fact, he was past his best when he played for Bolton, and the move to the A-League came three years after that. It was bizarre that the Jets even signed him considering Jardel had moved around a lot since 2003 and had hardly scored a goal. As for Heskey, the last time he got into double figures for goals came back in 2005. The most goals Heskey has ever scored in one Premier League season is 14 - that says everything. He's never been prolific, yet in his first season in the A-League, at the age of 34/35, he scored one goal in something like every 2.5 games. In fact, in his first year in the A-League, Heskey matched the total number of Premier League goals he scored for Aston Villa. Also just seen that he got nominated for the Jets' Player of the Year award as well so I would say that he had some success in his first season in the A-League, wouldn't you? I think I stand by what I said.

um,noone thought greenacre was antyhing special. plus,it also goes the other way. Mario Jardel who scored 130 goals in 125 games for porto and came to the jets aged 33, the jets released him midway through the year because he was so bad. Emile Heskey(although he had patches of quality) who played for some of the top teams in England was so bad at times that a website was named called Whenwillheskeyscore.com. There are many more but at the end of the day It all depends on the persons attitude whether they do well or not. all pros are talented, but when you have a good attitude that's when you become a star.

why is that? hull city captain not good enough for epl? bundelsiga winner who played in the bundelsiga a year ago is not good enough for epl? crystal palace who are a mid-table epl team wanted milligan, but that doesn't make him good enough to play for an epl team? Liverpool wanted spiranovic back in 2011 but he turned them down because he wanted to start. Ben kantaravski( who is an average player in the league) had a trial for Bayern munich). im not saying any of these guys could play for top teams like Chelsea, man city etc but they could all be signed for lower teams like Leicester, bunrley etc

Its very difficult to say how the top A league players would fare in the Prem, I would say though the A league boys didn't look too out of place at the world cup against 3 of the best nations there.I wonder how the premier league laden English side would have performed in our group,I'd argue not a hell of a lot better.

Yeah because the quality of one or two games is indicative of the quality of the league... Look at Shane Smeltz. Didn't make in the English Football League but scored goals in the A-League. Chris Greenacre - nothing more than a lower league striker in England but played 80-odd games in the A-League. Or Paul Ifill, a very good player in England but has played how many games in the Premier League? I'm sure players look technically proficient in Australia but to be able to do it at pace in conditions which are more conducive to high-tempo football is the challenge. Also, athleticism is so much a part of the game. Unless you are exceptional technically it isn't enough a lot of the time in Europe. You need to be strong, quick, powerful as well if you are to succeed at the top level.

Leicester were in for Janko in January, though he was still contracted to Trobzanaspor but wanted out. Celtic also were rumoured to be interested.

Janko's Austrian, not Australian. Aside from that, not a bad list.

You spent hours in this nonsense? Why not spending a few days trying to explain why are they NOT playing in any european league? That would be a more interesting material for the readers. Hope at least you had some good wine that made your brainstorming of some value.
