Australia vs South Africa: 2014 ODI tri-series live scores, blog

By Suneer Chowdhary / Roar Guru

A loss to Zimbabwe was definitely not on Darren Lehmann’s menu before this series began and he will hope Australia can turn things around when they take on South Africa in their last league game of the tri-series in Harare. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:30pm (AEST).

What makes Australia’s defeat to Zimbabwe interesting is that it exposed a potential state of difference in opinion between the captain and the selection panel – one that was revealed indirectly by Michael Clarke in the post-match conference.

When asked whether Clarke was bothered by Steven Smith’s exclusion from the side, he agreed. He expressed his surprise at not having the services of the all-rounder on a track where both his batting and bowling would have been of immense use.

On a surface where the part-time spin bowling of Sean Williams was as difficult to play as it was last game – and he was one of the four spinners employed by their captain – Australia had Nathan Lyon and Glenn Maxwell. Aaron Finch rolled his arm over to only be tonked out of the attack yet again while Clarke’s injury woes did not allow him to bowl much.

The seething captain’s absence from this game – on account of his hamstring injury – will make it easier for the selectors to bring Smith back into the line-up. Mitchell Johnson, who was rested last game, should be back too, but it remains to be seen who will make way for him.

With two defeats from two consecutive games, Australia would do well to throw experimentation out of the window and play their best XI. Unfortunately, one cannot be sure what their best XI is after those losses, especially in the bowling department.

Lehmann did not mince words either when he spoke about how the loss should sting everyone in the dressing room but he defended Smith’s exclusion. He said it was a matter of giving everyone some game time.

For South Africa, AB de Villiers could be back from his leg injury, which was probably a cramp. He will captain the side but it remains to be seen whether he will have the services of JP Duminy, who has suffered a knee injury.

What that means is that it could still give Rilee Rossouw a chance to open his account in international cricket, after having gotten out twice for a duck.

It’s also been reported that Morne Morkel’s shoulder is giving him trouble and if he does not make it to the starting XI, Dale Steyn will need to shoulder additional responsibility. Given how Australia played the Zimbabwean spinners, it’s difficult to see South Africa not play both their slow bowlers, Imran Tahir and Aaron Phangiso, in this one.

Another defeat for Australia allows Zimbabwe an outside chance of making the final if they can beat South Africa last game. More vitally, even if Australia qualify for the final after losing this one, there will be a definite denting of morale and Lehmann and co. will hope they can turn things around from this very game.

George Bailey will lead the side again in Clarke’s absence.

Well done Australia, an easy win in the end. South Africa still has an issue with death bowling, they should never have chased 280+

It is sad because Test cricket desperately needs India to be competitive in all environments. If they pushed Australia to a thrilling Test series down under imagine the level of attention that would draw to the longest form. It's so disappointing to see the sparse Test crowds at matches in India nowadays just a decade after an era when the stadiums were overflowing.

I hope it does not but it's equally inevitable and sad it will. Then the same team under the same captain will travel to Australia and get hammered and the voices of dissent will rise again. I was recently joking to a mate of mine, India should be stopped from playing Tests abroad and England should be prevented from playing ODIs altogether till they get their respective acts right.

That's that then, I take a break for a couple of days before returning for the final on Saturday. The South Africa-Zimbabwe game will be played on Thursday. It's been great covering these games so far and I hope to have everyone's company for the final too! Have a good night ahead...ciao!

AB de Villiers reckons his bowlers bowled alright, it was Mitchell Marsh's innings that was the difference. Calls du Plessis' century as one of the best he has seen. Bailey calls the total as a competitive one. He credits his bowlers and fielders for winning it for them. Marsh is the man-of-the-match.

Cheers Suneer, enjoy India's inevitable crushing victory. Only downside is that it will probably distract from their shocking Test efforts as has happened so often in the past with India, allowing the Test side to squirm out of being held fully accountable.

Marsh's 86 built on the base set up by Phil Hughes, who had earlier made 85. They went berserk towards the end, scoring more than 100 in the last 10 and that's where South Africa did not know what hit them. While batting, South Africa kept losing wickets very regularly and it needed du Plessis to play a masterful innings, a second ODI century, to keep them together. Still, once he got out, there was nothing left in the tank and the rest of the side capitulated to hand out a 62-run win.

So, as far as the points are concerned, South Africa have nine, Australia have 10 and Zimbabwe have four. So, if Zimbabwe beat South Africa with a bonus point and by some margin, the hosts could edge out South Africa too. Australia are already through to the final. Difficult to see that happen though.

Bonus point win, Australia qualify for the final. SA left to scrap with Zim for second place. Mitch Marsh saved Australia today, if he hadn't exploded like that it would have been a far different contest. Australia again batted poorly against spin and can expect to face plenty of overs from slow bowlers in the final. It is an enduring problem but, luckily, not one that should be exposed on the hard Aussie decks in the upcoming World Cup.

Gone, caught, Tahir has hit it straight to long-off! Maxwell gets his second, the first of the innings and the last, and South Africa have been bowled out for 220. Bonus point for them too.

Maxwell has a chance to finish off with another wicket here. Comes on now to bowl at the last pair. Australia need to bowl them out for less than 225 to win with a bonus point.

Gone, two wides and boom, one of the stumps has gone on a walk! Length ball from Johnson and Morkel was driving at it with no feet and as lavishly as one would against a bowler bowling at 120 km/hr. Missed completely. Nine down. 66 needed from 44.

Johnson dishes out a bouncer and Phangiso goes to pull it. Mistimed but falls short of the rushing keeper. 69 needed from 46.
