Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes review

By Richard Hosnell / Roar Pro

In the wake of the Makybe Diva stakes, there were a number of success stories and failures. Who disappointed and who left punters with heavy wallets last weekend?

Green Moon (7) $31 – Was a bit slow to begin, settled last on the rail and was still last at the turn looking for a gap up the middle, boxed on well up the straight to finish in sixth, was a solid run and looks in good touch, looking for more ground.

Fawkner (3) $10 – Jumped well and settled fourth, one wide, got the run of the race and let down in the straight to really challenge eventual winner, missed by a narrow margin for second, excellent run, looks to have another big prep ahead.

Boban (4) $4 – Jumped alright but ran into a bit of trouble early which unsettled him a little, settled near the rear on the rail, remained close to the rail on the turn and ended up behind eventual winner Dissident, looked to lose momentum when held up behind winner and finished only fairly for fifth, bit luckless again.

Super Cool (5) $41- Slow to begin and settled near the rear outside of Boban, was the widest runner on the turn and was fair down the straight to finish in eighth, not bad for first up and will be better for the run and looking for more distance.

Sertorius (10) $26 – Jumped ok and settled midfield outside of Puissance De Lune, came four wide on the turn and boxed on well up the straight for seventh, looked in good order.

Puissance De Lune (2) $7.50 – Jumped well and settled midfield on the rail, tracked up behind Fawkner on the turn and came home strongly for third, looking for more ground now and a win could be not far away.

Messene (9) $12 – Jumped ok and was made to work pretty hard to cross and lead from the wide barrier, went out to a three length lead with Dissident and was still there at the turn but faded fast and was poor down the straight to finish second last.

Spillway (8) $11 – Was slow to begin and settled last outside Green Moon, was pretty wide around the turn with cover, found some room and finished really well for fourth, looks in good order.

Dissident (6) $2.80 – Began well to settle second, worked up to contest the lead, sharing the lead on the turn and was strong down the straight to fight off the challengers, tough win, has really come of age.

Don Doremo (1) $61 – Jumped well and settled fourth on the rail, close to leaders on the turn still on the rail, ran out of puff and was only fair down the straight, finished last.

As a major owner of Dissident, id think P Moody will pull out all stops to set it for the Cox plate. Now with 3 gr1s, 2 more than Fawkner & possibly another to come he's building a formidable record. Dissident is only a 4yo, more improvement is likely. But racing so handy or leading, allows him to dictate the race. Especially if any 3yo's decide to contest the Cox, because so far, most of the good ones are backmarkers. As for this saturday in the mares race p moody has metorphorical resuming. Now a 4yo fresh can get a nice sit & finish hard. I rate her 9/1 chance, alas $15 fxd

Dissident in future races is very likely to be taken straight to the lead. He is displaying a real bulldog style of not letting anything pass him once in the lead. In the Deva' Messene put Dissident in the awkward position by dropping off before the turn, leaving Dissident a sitting duck, not raced at headquarters before, thier was 460 metres to hold off the well-seasoned challenges. His turn of foot broke them up till the 200, then they started reducing the margin. At the 100 Fawkner looked like saluting, at the 50 Fawkner grinding away. Dissident refuses to yield. The post arrives. Like Better loosen up, You're not gettn' passed me!

Well I took just a couple of things from that race ! And they are questions like: 1. Will Dissident get a strong 2000 m of the Cox Plate ? 2. What races he accepts for , won't Fawkner win this Spring ? As for the rest, I would not be bothered spending any great deal time on them ! Hopefully there are some other different formlines to consider in coming weeks !

Yea was super impressed by Fawkner and think we will be seeing him in the winning circle again very soon. Green Moon was also good and I thought he was pretty handy earlier in the year in Melbourne, that form should see him having a good Spring.

impossible to see fawkner not running top 3 in his next 2 runs which are confirmed as turnball and cox plate. he is just so adaptable. it doesn't matter if there is a bias, fast tempo, slow tempo, wet track, dry track, big field, small field, any barrier. whatever the circumstances, he jumps well, relaxes in the run conserving energy and then lets down instantly once asked. he never gets injured. with a top turn of foot he is sure to be in the finish. green moon was good enough too. I think he is value for the caul cup and with compressed weight, gets in well, only 5kg over the minimum. ran 2nd in this race to southern speed. he is going very well. viewed and dunaden have both won melb cups in recent times and then won a caul cup. he is silly overs at $51 for the caul cup for mine, esp given he is guaranteed a start.
