Gould's commentary was the real travesty

By Adam / Roar Guru

On Sunday, the Melbourne Storm, attempting to mount an unlikely comeback, crossed for what looked to be an incredible try.

The play went from one side of the field to the other and back to the middle before Sisa Waqa crossed under the posts.

Watching in my loungeroom as a neutral, it got me out of my seat. It was spectacular rugby league.

So when the replays showed that Jesse Bromwich had knocked on way earlier in the play, it was understandably disappointing. The video ref ruled no try and a classic moment was lost. But that’s rugby league, and they got the decision right.

Some members of the commentary team, unfortunately, let their disappointment get the better of them. From that point on, viewers were subjected to an ongoing diatribe against the video referee.

Phil Gould called the decision “one of the great travesties of the modern era.” After a couple of players were later placed on report following video referee reviews, he stated in a dejected voice, “I’m very quickly losing interest in this.”

For the record, I have huge respect for Phil Gould as a footballing mind. His insights into the game in his newspaper columns and on mid-week talk shows are up there with the best. And he has done wonderful things at the Panthers.

But during a live call, unless everything goes perfectly – rare in a game with as many grey areas as rugby league – he usually manages to get a bee in his bonnet and kill the fun. Sunday’s game was a perfect example.

When I sit down to watch the footy, I’m looking for an escape. Nothing better than kicking back with a beer and watching a game after a long work week.

However instead of simply calling the action, increasingly we get agenda-driven commentators overcome by emotion when something ticks them off. Gus isn’t the only one, but he’s certainly the worst.

Am I the only one that just wants to relax and enjoy a sporting contest, warts and all? Rugby league is an imperfect game. The things that make it imperfect are the same things that make it great.

The game has issues, I get that. And we should try to improve it wherever possible. But can we please save those discussions for the chat shows, for the newspaper inches?

I can’t imagine new viewers, with little understanding or interest in the game’s more controversial aspects, would have any chance of being drawn in while ever we have commentators going on negative rants smack bang in the middle of a call.

I look at Andrew Voss as the best commentator to listen to. He doesn’t take the controversial moments too seriously. He at least sounds like he’s having fun up there.

Please, Phil, bring back the fun. If you can’t manage that, step away from the live calls. Let us enjoy our footy.

Along the lines of your above commentary more about "Gus" Gould. I switched over to Channel 9 post Broncos/Cowboys because Fox goes straight to another show. I wanted to hear some positive commentary (and bask a little) in the Broncs courageous battles not only against the Cows, but also the crap that had been going down regarding last week's match and the kerfuffle about the half, Lodge etc etc. So, here I found the three stooges - "Queenslanders" Wally and Fatty and, staring into space like an Easter Island statue, G. Gould. Wally and Fatty mumbled some words - being careful not to offer any Bronco praise. Then Gould launched into a nonsense rant about how the Bronco's tries were all wrong, including the clever kick into the in-goal from Mcculloch. He stated emphatically that the Cowboys "Should have won" even though the Broncos were the better team. What does this mean? Is he on something?

I am a rugby union man but I watch my fair share of league, I must agree with you, Gould's rantings after the try was disallowed was disappointing, I thought it was great refereeing, to one first pick up the error, knock on, then refer it for a decision highlighted the success of the system! It was a win for the game of league and the systems they have in place. Perhaps Gould should be fined for his antics, guaranteed if a coach were involved he would be summarily punished. Disappointing Mr Gould!!

It's not a fact. The Bulldogs players ran over asking the ref to have a look at obstruction on the other side of the field. The ref specifically asked the video ref to look at the two dropped balls.

it appears their commentary team has the foundations of the 3 stooges, one says something and gets a slapping from the other and then there is some more funny stuff, however it dosn't come off all the time and some of it is misunderstood. So it appears that Gus role is commentator/fan and it works sometimes. It is mildly funny to me but Vossy is the man for me!

True, to both points. I recall one Sunday morning on the Footy Show Gould actually telling Voss off for being too positive. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. If Channel Nine management think this is the way to go, they are a joke.

It kind of does though… His job isn't necessarily to be loved and enjoyed by fans it is to get us all talking. He succeeded

Nah Gus still would of whinged. His agenda is against the refs not the Bulldogs… Was a deadset knock-on though. no doubt.

The fact that if Waqa didn't score it would play on is a problem with the game. Not a good thing.

My gut feeling was that it was a try. The play was slowed down on replay to the point where it was obvious that they were both contesting the ball, so it could just as easily have been ruled as a knock on the other way. I think the ref killed a wonderful rugby league moment and killed off any chance of a Storm come back. I thought that the Jamie Soward field goal on the Saturday was more contentious as it looked like a flat punt kick. No video ref reviewed that one.

If not fake, they actually think the viewers like it. They think they are the "Bill and Tony" show from The Third Man cassette from the 80s.

Andrew Johns is great with strategy and analysing plays, but he can' call a game in real time. Just keep him for pre-game and half-time analysis. Vossy is the number 1 play-by-play caller in the game.

I wonder how much Gus had wagered on the Melbourne Drizzle?

I cannot agree with this at all - Gould was reacting to the fact that the referee had called 6 to go TWICE since that 'knock on' yet the Video ref goes all the way back to check something the on field referee has already ruled on. That is far worse for the first time viewer than Gould rightfully sh*tcanning what is a blight on the game. Not being able to rule on forward passes, yet being able to overrule (the increasingly rare) decisions made on field is absolutely insane.

Ahh Paul, the Bulldogs did in fact demand and receive a review of the play. Regardless of whether some teams have more sway than others, or whether the referees are influenced by it, that is EXACTLY what happended. Fact. Bringing a bit of humour to the subject, did anyone else notice the bulldogs player run over yelling "obstruction, obstruction!!" Not sure who it was unfortunately. There wasn't even the slightest hint of an obstruction through any part of the play. It's clearly just the easiest way to get the referees attention and put doubt in their mind. They know the rule has become so confusing that the on field refs don't know what an obstruction look like for the ground.

You forgot to mention Ray Warren and the other tired old man who always rave on about some boring pet hate of theirs. We really need a remote button where you can here the crowd but kill off the commentary, in all the TV sports. Because it's TV you don't need a commentary. Maybe just name the players and have a modern comments person.

In my opinion - NO knock on - it was pushed backwards off his fingertips in my opinion (and I have watched countless replays). That the ball was passed countless times (8-9 if my memory serves me correeclty) before the replay was called for is a seperate issue; and again I dont think the ref should be able to go that far back. Referee the bloody game FFS. If he thought it was a knock on, make the call, have a scrum and lets move on with that (bad) call. The video ref shouldn't be an out for poor referreeing just because a try allows them to check things. And for the record, i dont care what team is playing - my opinion is based on the love of the game itself ... which is becoming ridiculous with its constant changes every year!! As for gus & rabs, i love Gus for his football brain .. and if his commentary annoys me there is always the radio for audio! :-)

I am so happy that people are finally starting to say this. The reason that they review things so many times is because of Gould and the way he carries on. For weeks prior to the Bronco's match against the Dragons Gould and other commentators called for referee's to take control of the game and send players off the field for indiscretions, the call was for them to get their confidence back and assert themselves. Then in that match exactly that happened and the ref did exactly what had been called for sent a player off but, there was one problem the ref was wrong. This was a critical moment when commentators could get behind and support ref's taking control of the game instead, for 27 minutes after the incident Gould could not stop hammering the ref (who apolygised to the player) for a decision that was certainly not the "greatest Clanger of all time" it did not decide even effect the result of the match. That night however channel 9 led with the story of "the greatest clanger in history" which is a bad look for the game and it was all over the paper and airwaves for the following week. Thank goodness people are writing these articles now to stand up to him and stop him doing the damage he is doing. With Gould it is a case of killing the thing that he loves. He really needs to back off or stop commentating.
