Jumping at the thrill of an AFL finals victory

By Nicholas Mirarchi / Roar Guru

For every day of my 16 years on earth I have waited to witness my North Melbourne Kangaroos succeed in the heat of finals football. Finally, this is coming to fruition.

The past two weeks I have sat through nail-bitting finals that I am proud to say are two of the best victories I have witnessed.

What a feeling it was, sitting in the crowd when Drew Petrie kicked two clutch goals in a minute to win the game and jumping with joy as the thrill of the crowd erupted around me.

There is no better feeling than seeing Ben Brown come of age and become the big-time player in his first final, right in front of your eyes. The feeling that there is a next week, and another chance to shine, all while walking out of the MCG and singing victory songs with excitement and anticipation. It brings confidence to your week and brings a positive mood set into your life.

There is an amazing thrill of witnessing Geelong fight back, watching with nerves and yelling at every piece of play. As Geelong narrow the margin it makes you wish the siren would just sound and the game can just end. And as the last passage of play takes place, and your almost unable to watch sitting on the edge of your seat, that is the thrill of finals.

When Todd Goldstein takes a match-winning mark in crunch time – that is the thrill of finals. When you watch with unbearable nerves just praying for the siren to sound, when you finally hear it, rise and cheer – that is the thrill of finals football

The realisation that North Melbourne are through to a preliminary final is an uplifting and satisfying feeling. Going in with so much confidence and a great flowing game style makes you feel North can conquer anything.

This side is reminiscent of the team of the early 1990s, an up and coming force to be reckoned with. You just feel that this can be a dawn of a new era that dominates the rest of the decade for the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Finally I’m living through the thrill of finals.

Hey Nick...as an English Teacher and a man of great passion, can I say you have a journo future? There is passion and focus. A liitle bit of Gerard Whately and there is no better praise than that...apart from; 1. Dennis Cometti 2. Glenn Mitchell ...but Gerard is 3 and you are on that track. Keep it up.

I can understand why 16 years seems like a long time to a 16 year old, and I'll leave it at that. I also hope North gets up & wins this one!

Rob, give the kid a break. It's not his fault his side hasn't won a flag in his lifetime. Who are you to tell him to get his hand off it. Perhaps focus your energy on your own clubs issues.....they've been rebuilding for almost his whole life!!

Rob ditto from an even older dogs supporter! Although I have to admit, Nicholas' article does remind us that it's 15 years ago since North's last premiership - that golden era of the 90s only seems like yesterday.

Hate to burst your bubble but it was Melbourne that were robbed of the 98 flag... After all we finished fourth, beat 5th by 10 goals in the first week of the finals then were somehow due to a ridiculous system forced onto the wrong side of the draw and got to watch as the team we flogged took the flag... We should have been playing the dogs in the prelim who we would have humiliated then the following week either got a flaky North Melbourne or an Adelaide we had thrashed on the same ground a few weeks before.

Back in 93 we snuck in to the finals and got blown away - and by 94 we got pipped in the prelim. Little did we know we'd contest the next 6 prelims. The most you can ask for preseason is to make the prelims - from there - anything can happen. In the 90s 7 prelims for 3 GFs for 2 flags. 98 we prob most deserved to win and didn't. Justice is served cold. Finals victories are served hot. Hopefully the Roos can run hot on Friday night.
