Hawthorn win 2014 AFL Grand Final 137-74 over Sydney

By The Roar / Editor

The Hawthorn Hawks have won the 2014 AFL Grand Final, beating the Sydney Swans by 63-points in front of 99,454 at the MCG.

FINAL SCORE:
SYDNEY 11.8 (74)
HAWTHORN 21.11 (137)

Josh Kennedy kicked the first goal of the match, but from that point on it was largely one-way traffic.

The first quarter ended with the Hawks leading by 20-points, and by half time they were 42-point leaders.

The second quarter started well for the Swans, as Ben McGlynn kicked the first goal. But the Hawks professionalism and cool heads did not falter as they answered with a string of five consecutive goals.

The momentum continued in the Hawks favour in the second half, as Jarryd Roughead and Jack Gunston kicked the opening goals of the half.

Kieren Jack and Lance Franklin showed some fight for the Swans, but they could not hold back the Hawks who continued to push the lead out to 54-points by the final break.

The Hawks’ pressure was terrific all day and all their key cogs featured heavily.

Luke Hodge finished the match with 35 touches and two goals – he won the 2014 Norm Smith Medal.

Sam Mitchell finished with 33 touches and nine tackles.

Jordan Lewis was all class, finding the footy 37 times and taking 8 marks.

Emerging star, Will Langford, finished with 21 touches and three goals – one of his goals an absolute miracle dribbler from the sideline during the third term.

Hawthorn become just the third side to kick five goals in each quarter of a Grand Final and the first side to win back-to-back premierships since the Brisbane Lions.

Lance Franklin kicked four goals for the Swans, but was given little help up forward, as Kurt Tippet kicked just the one goal and Sam Ried went without a goal.

The Hawks had six men kick multiple goals and four players rack up more than 30 touches.

Jarryd Roughead lead the goal kicking count, booting a handful, finishing the match with five goals and 1 behind.

The Swans showed some fight in the second half, but were unable to claw their way back into the match, as the Hawks raced away to a 63-point victory.

HAWTHORN 5.5 11.9 16.11 21.11 (137)
SYDNEY 2.3 5.3 8.5 11.8 (74)

Agree Congrats to hawks and OMG as a swans supporter.. My enduring thought is "what a sad GF for AFL:". I mean what a boring game to watch? I would have rather a decent loss than thinking "may be a movie would be better." And hey, I enjoy the other side showing skills but Sydney was just painful it was not entertaining. I put the blame on Longmire. He showed he is a one plan , plan A, coach. He had to mix it up and change tack completely to give the Swans players even hope as mentally, plan A was shot to pieces. Did he now know that? Was he as shellshocked? I think Sydney will play well in 2015 and easily make top 4 but if they meet Hawthorn and are not mentally recovered.... Hawks will smash them again.

Nat, my apologies, it was an unfair thing to say. The only thing I have sought all year from Swans supporters was respect for the Hawthorn Football Club. The Swans took arguably our best player and definitely our most marketable, and then their supporters complained that he would ruin their culture. Then when he came good, it was all about him improving into the Bloods culture. He was compared to Lockett and Hall, in the bad-boy sense. Seriously?! We are not St Kilda FFS. The self-righteousness of so many Swans supporters was staggering. I did not read one post from a Swans supporter who said, "you know what, Buddy was at Hawthorn for 9 years and that is as well run as any club in the land. He is probably a true pro as a result. I doubt Clarko and the gang would have allowed him to stay otherwise." That is all I was after. I didn't care that you insulted Buddy. After all, he insulted us by seeking out a trade to the Swans shortly after losing the 2012 GF. I cared that you insulted the HFC and every post I made was an attempt (some of them misguided) to have that rectified. I presume that Saturday has done that for all Swans supporters so the next time COLA is used to poach our superstar, you will know they will fit right in and even help improve your Bloods culture :-)

I sort of did comment on Breust when I commented on Malceski. Sydney played Breust back into form by lining him up on Malceski. An AA defender who never defends. He just relies on Richards, Rampe and Smith to clean up after him and Poppy, Gunston and Roughie just didn't allow that. That left Grundy and Shaw to cover for him and they are just out of their depth without the other trio covering for them too. Malceski found that playing as an unaccountable wingman while placed on a half back flank only works against bottom 10 sides. He got his kicks and was able to look around an blame everyone else (ususally in the heat of battle) but Breust just cruised around, enjoying his early Christmas, kicked 3 goals (30% of Sydney's score) and set up stacks of others. I've got a hunch Breust might see more of the midfield next year. I think he is a wonderful player but he has been badly out of form.

All good Peter. I am looking forward to 2015 already. I think it may be closer at the top of the table than this year but will save my predictions til I see how trading (and more importantly the fixture - wasn't a fan of Freo's this year!) pans out

That they did Don, but the Hawks played some of their worst footy that day. Freo probably played their best game all year.

The Dangerfield comment is funny, not unlikely, but I think he might go and join his mate Bernie. I think if the result went the other way, Goodes would have retired. He still may, but I think considering he was one of few that stood up yesterday, he will play on. I think the Swans will bring Derickx back as the second ruck. Malceski to stay, Mitchell to go. I reckon you are spot on.

Sorry for calling you a flog Balthazar. I read your post and I was upset. When we were here having respectful dialogue with Hawks fans in the lead up to the game, you weren't. So it kind of felt like you had just decided to come on and make your comments because of how you feel about the team rather than anything else. As for me being unpleasant, I am sorry I come across that way. I would probably describe it more as cocky and overly confident. I say it how it is and don't shirk the issue. It is an opinion site after all. I get tired of people who hide, stay in hiding, or only come out of hiding when it suits them. And as for me being on here all year, i only started posting 8 weeks ago....must have made some sort of impact hey. Your not a flog and given you are not a he as I thought, your knowledge of the game is impressive.

s game yesterday? I posted about his overall effect on a team.. As far as flog goes,it was in reference to your previous trolling and calling people you only know on the internet classless. Stop trying to take Ron Burgundy's lines anyway.

I remember the Saints exit Don and I also remember the instant turnaround in GCS after he became Blueys boss and it was significant. I wasn't aware that there were that many injuries
