Beams AFL trade might have to wait: Lions

By Roger Vaughan / Wire

Brisbane admit Dayne Beams might have to wait a year before leaving Collingwood, despite his manager’s confidence that the AFL clubs can strike a deal.

While the Magpies are sympathetic to Beams’ wish for a trade, he is under contract until the end of next season and the two clubs are at loggerheads over what a deal will involve.

Brisbane are prepared to offer their top pick at No.4 in the national draft for the star midfielder.

But Magpies coach Nathan Buckley was adamant on the weekend that they also want a ready-made player from the Lions.

Beams is a Queensland native and is keen to join his brother Claye at the Lions.

He also wants to be closer to his father, who is in Byron Bay and is in remission from cancer.

“We think pick four is very fair, but we do understand that Dayne is contracted,” Lions football manager Dean Warren told AFL Trade Radio.

“If we have to wait, we might have to wait until he’s out of contract the following year.”

But Beams’ manager Paul Connors was confident on Monday that the two clubs will reach an agreement.

“I am sure they will get a deal done at some stage,” Connors said.

Connors added that Brisbane, not Gold Coast, would be the better deal option for Collingwood.

Earlier on Monday, Collingwood president Eddie McGuire said they understood why their 2012 best and fairest winner wanted to leave.

But McGuire made it clear it is now up to the Lions to make the deal happen.

“We’ve been well aware of Beamsy’s situation, we love the bloke, we want him to have a great life,” McGuire said on TripleM.

“We’re happy to facilitate if that’s what’s required because of the humanitarian situation.

“But if it’s coming down to people wanting to go because they’re getting paid more money then, no, there’s a contract in place.

“If people want to do the right thing and do a deal, there will probably be a deal done.”

Connors also confirmed that Essendon ruckman Patrick Ryder’s preferred new club is Port Adelaide.

Ryder wants to leave the Bombers as the fallout continues from their supplements scandal.

Connors insists money is not an issue.

“This is a purely welfare-driven decision,” Connors said.

“You can’t tell someone how to feel.”

But Ryder’s future is also not clear-cut because he is contracted to Essendon for another two seasons.

Meanwhile, Connors said Fremantle veteran Luke McPharlin is likely to keep playing.

The key defender crucially missed the finals because of a calf injury.

Carlton have ruled out trying to poach Tom Mitchell from Sydney, but are interested in Greater Western Sydney youngster Kristian Jaksch.

I don't agree with that at all, Don. I think they've been forced into a rebuild and aren't totally sure what to do from here. They expected to do better in 2013 than they did, I"m confident of that.

Like Brisbane had to give in to Buckleys childhood dream tanties so he could go and win premierships with Collingwood - although as it was Buckley wouldn't have got a game in a Voss, Akka, Black and Lappin midfied - and before you moan - Akka a way better finisher than Buckley - Lappon a way better line runner and Black and Voss won more hard ball gets in one game than Buckley did in his career

Oh my goodness - I agree with Slane - world turned upside down- Buckelys' selfishness as a player (watch Q4 2002 GF and all 2003 GF to see what I mean) has followed him as a coach

Even with COLA Brisbane lost Headland, O Bree, Rory Hilton who were all Lions first round draft picks - to say nothing of Buckley - well said earlier - its all a big ok when 'kids' want to go home to Victoria - but not so great the other way it it

'blind Freddy can see this club is travelling through a rebuild in a strong decisive manner' Is 'strong decisive manner' where the club plummets down to the bottom six, and then remains out of premiership contention for up to 10 years?

Leading Teams is undoubtedly a great system, so long as the players along with the supporters and sponsors of the club, don't object to losing more often than not and joining the ranks of the also rans as part of the bargain.

Beams' decision to dump the Pies is old news now; what is more interesting are the rumors circulating that Swan and Reid both want out of the club. Buckley's latest desperate attempt to defend the mass exodus from the Pies playing ranks, has him claiming that he likes conflict; which seems highly likely so long as he is the one putting the boot into someone else. Buckley's attempts to hype the Pies chances of rebounding are going to be sorely tested, along with the purported crop of 'exciting young players' who with the exception of Elliott and potentially Langdon and Frost, are a long way from proving themselves. Pies supporters and sponsors need to send a message to the likes of McGuire, by keeping their wallets in their pockets until Buckley either shapes up, or as seems more likely, is unceremoniously shown the door. Still if the attendance numbers are down at Collingwood games, McGuire will no doubt point the finger at so called 'crap' entertainment, poor scheduling, high priced food/drinks and if necessary global warming.

Have a go at listing those 13 premiership stars and tell us how many are still playing and how many are still playing any good. Shaw is worse, Thomas is worse...there's no one else...they've all finished. Do you blame Bucks for people getting old? That whole rat pack thing was a divisive clique. Leading teams has players speaking honestly to each other, ensuring each player is heard. The Tatt Pack didn't like that. It requires them to be accountable to others. Collingwood will be the stronger. They have rebuilt while in the 8 for most of the year. I'm not a Collingwood fan but blind Freddy can see this club is travelling through a rebuild in a strong decisive manner.

Are you suggesting Buckley should bow to the pressure of a boy who hasn't yet grown hair on his tattoos and can't live alone at the age of 24? Buckley and Pendlebury...or Beams? Hmmm, Beams seems to suit whatever it is Reality Check is arguing, so lets call Beams the authority. He needs to grow up and Reality Check need a reality check.

Beams disliking the Leading Teams system is not any part of a good excuse for wanting to leave Collingwood. He is a professional footballer on very good money and he should start acting like one. If he is so upset about this he should just stand down from football, or should Collingwood give in to childish tantrums?

Beams has told the club that he dislikes the Leading Teams system installed by Buckley - The Age October 1st 2014 - DOH! Collingwood has shed 13 premiership stars from the point at which inept wanabee Buckley was forced onto the playing group, and by his own admission the club cannot expect to return to their previous winning ways anytime soon, with Buckley recently quoted as saying that the current batch of players 'will take 3-5 years to ripen' Unfortunately for the likes of Scott Pendlebury, in five years time it will be game before the Pies can escape the abyss; unless they move now to dump the hapless Buckley. It is time for Pies supporters and sponsors to 'stand up' as Buckley loves to say, when sheeting home blame for the clubs demise to anyone other than himself, by insisting that Buckley be shown the door. The knives will inevitably come out for Buckley during season 2015, when it becomes obvious that the Pies are continuing there downward spiral into oblivion; and not a moment too soon.

He has made no such public comment. If he did, it would have been reported. Anti Buckley types will always make things up. If Beams said that, Collingwood would simply dig their heels in and wave the contract at him.

Beams made it publicly known that he was dissatisfied with Buckley, including his reliance on consultants to make up for his own glaring inabilities as a coach. Pendlebury and Elliot have now rushed to Buckley’s defence, which is hardly surprising for a recently appointed captain and a kid too young to know any better. The facts of the matter are irrefutable; Buckley took over a premiership winning team of back to back grand finalists, that is now staring down the barrel of a bottom six finish during season 2015 and beyond. Pendlebury who turns 27 during January 2015, would be well served to content himself with the Collingwood captaincy while it lasts, as his playing career will be well and truly over, before the Pies can regain their winning ways if they refuse to dump Buckley.

Beams made in known publicly that he was not happy with Buckley, including his reliance on consultants; presumably to make up for his own glaring inadequacies as a coach. Pendlebury and Elliot have now come out in defence of Buckley, which is entirely predictable for Pendles, given his recent appointment as captain, and Elliot is little more than a kid. Notwithstanding all the denials, there is a stench at Collingwood that is not going away soon, with the undeniable fact that Buckley has dragged a premiership winning team of back to back grand finalists down to the level of also rans in three short years. Buckley's simplistic mantra of 'train harder' and 'stand up' coupled with his overt inability to relate to the playing group, was always going to be a problem. Pendlebury turns 27 during January of 2015, and will need to have resigned himself to the reality, that unless Collingwood dumps Buckley, his career will be over before the Pies can regain their winning ways.

Slane I am with you, Buckely is known to have a very uncompromising nature and if you look at the players that have left the one thing they all have in common is that they have a bit of a different streak, there is the "rat pack" types in Johnson, Shaw & Didak, then you have a "larrikin" in Thomas, the "crusader" Lamumba and now Beams who appears to fit more into the "rat pack", the only survivor is Swan and as DOn points out he is not playing his best football.

Silly me. Expecting an adult discussion with Don. I don't have the energy for this. I was very clearly talking about players choosing to play under a different coach. It is like Bomber Thompson leaving Geelong and Bartel, Hawkins, Enright, Taylor and Christianson all asking for a trade within 2 years. It doesn't matter if they play better or worse at their new club. It doesn't matter what the youth at their old club is doing

I agree with you Don, this whole business has become corrupted and the sooner someone is brought to account the better.
