'Dons blast Port over AFL trade offer

By Roger Vaughan / Wire

Essendon have derided Port Adelaide’s initial AFL trade offer for ruck-forward Patrick Ryder as nothing more than a bag of peanuts.

Bombers recruiting boss Adrian Dodoro did not mince his words at the start of the official trade period, making it clear they would play har- ball with the Power.

Ryder is one of the biggest names in this year’s trade mix after he decided to leave the Bombers, despite having two years left on his contract.

The Power are Ryder’s preferred destination after a strong season where he finished in the top 10 of the Essendon best and fairest awards and was unlucky not to make the initial All-Australian squad.

Dodoro said on Monday they were unconcerned that if Essendon cannot negotiate a deal for Ryder, he might try to use a new clause in the AFL player’s contract to leave the club for nothing.

Port are offering their first-round draft pick at No.16 for Ryder, but Dodoro said that was not nearly enough.

“We want a quality player in return,” Dodoro said.

“He’s a quality player, he’s at the peak of his powers as an AFL ruckman, so we want what’s fair.

“We want apples for apples, not apples for a bag of peanuts, basically … the ball is back in their court.”

If no deal is struck, Ryder could use the new contract clause and try to be released as a restricted free agent, on the grounds that Essendon breached their duty of care to him through the club’s supplements scandal.

“Irrespective of scenarios, we’re just worried about our list management position right now,” Dodoro said.

“There’s no guarantees anything will happen post this anyway.”

Also on Monday:

* Melbourne have done well out of losing free agent James Frawley to Hawthorn, receiving pick No.3 in the national draft as compensation. It leaves the Demons with picks two and three in the draft.

* Adelaide football boss David Noble said ongoing speculation about Patrick Dangerfield potentially being traded is “ridiculous”.
* But speculation continues to grow about the future of North Melbourne midfielder Levi Greenwood, who is out of contract. Collingwood in particular are interested in him.

* Sydney forward Tim Membrey wants a trade to St Kilda.

I think the Switkowski Report is compelling evidence in a breach of duty of care dispute for that period. Hope the players stay put, but if they want to go that badly, and for those reasons, get em gone and move on with good trade picks.

'Just keep being ugly' I say again, name calling is immature and suggestive of a bullying mind set. I can see my comments are upsetting to you so I will refrain from any further comment on this point. You have a nice day.

That's your problem. If you pre-empt a process, you are a 'hanging judge'. Just let the process happen. If you don't agree with with me, don't agree...but don't trouble yourself. My opinion of your opinion should not be that important to how you feel about yourself. You'll find that my attitude here is only in relation to tall poppy hatred. Anything else is fine on which to have an opinion. For instance, Freo will win the 2015 premiership. Just don't do that ugly Australian thing of judging without any knowledge at all. If you don't agree with that, you needn't care what I say. Just keep being ugly.

Don Freo I note that you have a tendency to resort to name calling. I think this can make meaningful dialogue difficult. I do not consider myself a hanging judge, nor am I a hyena. It is possible that I am unAustralian but one would have to get a universally accepted definition on that and presently it seems to mean whatever the person saying it wants it to mean. The truth is I disagree with you. Last time I checked that was still okay to do. Insulting people by name calling is immature and is often associated with a bullying mindset.

He could probably argue that at Dec2012, he wasn't aware of the extent to which Essendon had breach it's duty of care. Reckon he's taking the opportunity to jump into a genuine premiership prospect team?

Thanks Don - it was meant to be tongue in cheek and I'm glad it was received that way! Ironically I'm a Swannies man - but I am in a Port family so have always kept an eye on how the power are going. Yep - you're right the Wingard meal may not be 10/10 master chef quality for the main course or it might be lacking slightly in the entrée, but crikey... whatever he is... seafood dinner, eye fillet steak, one of those ridiculous Jamie Oliver's 10 minute meals that actually takes you 40 minutes because you end up burning everything trying to achieve perfection in 10 minutes... It's not an apple. This Essendon saga has given me some good laughs along the way, but this trade deal has been one of the better, more comedic moments.

Hey Oven...that is so wonderfully parochial! I'd be proud of a post like that if I posted it in a pro-Freo way. Should be more of this trumpeting of your own team rather than people putting down others. Great, amusing and fun post. (Not sure the Wingard meal would last for 4 quarters, though!)

This is hilarious! Wines, Hartlett or Wingard! Apples for Apples!!! Hahahaha. For a start Port are taking a risk that Ryder could cop a suspension. Second to that is the fact that a player like Wingard is already an elite AA level, match winning, freak of a player, and still 6-7 years younger than Ryder. Whether Ryder goes to Port or another club - he will leave. And he may do so with them getting no compensation if he goes down the duty of care being breached path. Port giving Wingard to Essendon would be like giving a three course seafood dinner for an apple. I think a fair trade would be a first round pick and a bonus opportunity for Darren Burgess to sit Jimmy Hird down and give him a series of educational tutorials on how to develop a successful conditioning program which is not dependent upon magic potions.

Is there a problem with that? There's a strange mentality with you hanging judges....and be clear here, I am a Freo boy, not an Essendon boy but I can't stand that failed Aussie trait that knocks someone under pressure. It is the attitude of a Hyena...and that is not Australian.

Agreed - Essendon won't admit to anything and yes they will blame everyone else.

Maybe he believed what the club told him. Believed that as Hird kept saying, when he could tell his side of it, all would be revealed; but since then he is seeing the fight is not to explain what happened but rather to discredit the investigation so that no one should ever know what happened. He might wonder why no one wants to explain. He might wonder if anyone actually knows what he was injected with and what the potential long term effects are. He might just be sick of wondering.

Don't think Essendon will admit to neglecting his health. He'll have to prove it. Any stress is not caused by Essendon, it is caused by those who are suggesting something is untoward...i.e. anyone but Essendon.

What about when the tribunal asks Ryder that if he feels so aggrieved then why did he signed a new contract in 2012?

He doesn't have to prove it in court. Ryder would appear before a grievances tribunal convened by the AFL. Given the AFL and Essendon have agreed on sanctions already and AFL are facilitating ongoing health checks for players involved in this saga, I don't imagine he would have much trouble making a case for stress and the need to move playing environments. Not facilitating this move puts paid to claims by everyone involved at Essendon about placing players needs above all. Hird will go to court for them when they ask him not to but won't help them move when they ask him to. Just as well they have him to look after them. These silly duffers apparently don't know their own mind!

Agree! the knock on Gorringe is that his attitude not his skill and body that is the problem. Well Polec had the same issues and look how that turned out, I think that is why he chose Port because after Polec and White he knows that Port can get more out of him.

Best comment I've seen regarding this. I wouldn't think there would be too many grounds for unfair dismissal on that front either.

Its time the Executive called a general meeting to give the members a say in this mess. The members need to take this club back from these people who think their doing the right thing by the club.

Yep........we know he will probably fail.........................................Cos EFC have had such great success in court lately???? Of course that is right they have a bulging bank a/c just waiting to pay more lawyers and court costs. take 'em on Ryder and when you win I hope costs are awarded against the other mob.

On the money Dougie.......................Let Essendon waste even more in legal fees trying to stop him. They will be in court with the guy at the bus stop soon......................Comes a time when they have to ask themselves is it us or everyone else.
